Just wondered what the recommended oil is for these cars, garage where I got it said to use fully synthetic, I used to stick mobil 1 in my passat 1.8t?

It used to be Castrol SLX longlife II 0w30 (VAG 503.00) But the specs have changed since.

I've still got a few litres of ELF Excellium LDX 0w30 left that I picked up a few years back.

If you do an annual oil change any quality fully synthetic 5w40 - 5w30 will be fine.

Open the service manual and see what the VW spec is, something like 504 or 507.

Then use any oil that meets that spec...

Dave the spec is VAG 503.00 but it's an old spec now.

I found the new spec (VAG 504.00) here - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

But these are longlife specs, as I said before for annual servicing you don't need as high spec oil and a 5w40 fully synthetic (VAG 505.00) changed once a year or at 10,000miles will be perfect.

Is Mobil 1 0w40 going to be ok, it shows VW 503/505 amongst other specs on the back? Currently 20% off at Halfords.

IMO 0-40 is a bit thin despite it being specced @ 503 and above. If you do not have high mileage then it will be fine, you may find slightly higher oil consumption from it. If you have 100k ish i would look at 10-40 .

Thanks. I'm at 70k

It may help if you read these links. They will explain to you all that the days of narrow banded multigrade oils have been left in the 20th century.

A 0w40 in no 'thinner' than a 10w40 but the 10w40 won't flow as well on cold winter mornings and and I know I'd like my camshafts to get as much oil as they can as soon as the oil pump will let them. :icon_thumright:
