I've got a 3 year old A6 Avant with a 2.5TDi engine and an Multitronic gearbox. It has started juddering when pulling away and it feels like the clutch isn't disengaging quickly enough when stopping. Has anyone else had this problem, or know what might cause it?

Same problem bummed out by Audi over service history, The gearbox oil has never been changed. I have it serviced on a variable service and the garage did not advise me that i ha to bring it in specifically to have the gearbox oil changed at 40K. I would have thought that at its 43K variable service they would have done it, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/swear.gif!

Did you find the problem, did you have the Gearbox changed ?

Hi
Yes I'm just experiencing this problem with my three year old 2.5 A6 Avant TD1 (71,000 miles). The dealership seemed to have come across the problem before but didn't explain it nor give me a ball park figure for repair. Would be very interested in the outcome with your A6

I heard of this problem from someone else, but the problem was te front wheel speed sensors that also feeds te multi ECU. Remove the wheel sensors clean them and replace them. this can cure the problem.

regards

shabaz

Thanks Shabaz - I'll suggest that to my dealership who are looking at the car right now

I think mine might need cleaning. Where are the sensors, and what is involved in cleaning & refitting them? Is it a DIY or technician-only job?

Its very easy. At the front of the hub, just behind the brake caliper you will see a wire attached to the wheel speed sensor held by a 5mm hex bolt. Undo this bolt and the sensor will slide out. Clean it with a degreaser. I use autoglym. Replacement is the reverse of removal. Let me know how you get on.
Regards

Mine does this very occasionally but its not consistent..

Would be very interested in any progress made after doing this sensor clean.. and in your progress too SilentW!

Thanks, will have a (careful) look. Is white spirit suitable?

My Dad has had this fault over the past 6 weeks. His is a A4 2.5tdi multitronic advant.

Took it into dealers today and they said the gearbox needed modifying, instead of 6 clutchs is is now going to have severn, which he belives it will now have severn gears.

He will be getting the car back tomorrow so will keep you guys posted.

whut??

I know the new models have the ratio split into 7 instead of 6 for when you are in 'manual' mode, and no longer do the 'constant revs' bit in normal drive (its always 1-2-3-4 etc like a traditional auto) but my dealer was adamant when my ecu was recently replaced, that you could not upgrade from the old type to the new..

Would be very interested to know exactly what they do to his car! Keep us posted!

Exactly what i thought, but i was just emulating what he had been told. All should be revealed tomorrow.........

What Audi found

'Trace fault to input shaft clutch plates updating from a 6 disc package to 7 disc package. Update gearbox ECU with new soft ware for the 7 plate package'.

All fitted and woking as new, what my farther said.

ok, interesting..

so if this is just clutch plates, then presumably the gearbox control behavior is exactly as before (albeit no longer faulty) rather than updated to the new type behavior?

What age is his A6? it would be interesting to know at what point this update became standard fitment..

Cleaned the sensors this morning. Exactly as Shabazmo said, it's a very easy job. The slight judder that was previously there on take-off is now banished.

brilliant jeff! thank you for that - will try it!

If a fumble-fingered idiot like me can do it, anyone can!

What I did was clean the sensor with white spirit to remove the rather waxy whitish/grey residue, then did the same on the inside of the cylindrical housing that it sits in.

Once the white spirit had evaporated, I gave the sensor a wipe over with a very small amount of WD40, eased it back into place & re-tightened the retaining bolt.

My 2003 A6 multitronic (27,000m) judders from standstill. Audi are replacing a spindle (modified part) in the gearbox under warranty next week. I spoke to someone else last week with similar problem and his car had the new 7 plate clutch installed under warranty (replacing standard 6 plate clutch) but for my car Audi says "the computer has diagnosed repalcement spindle"!!

hi i hav a audi a4 1.9 tdi multitronic it is a 04 i hav been told that it needs 7th cluch upgrade i hav tried to change oil i hav put stop slip oil in it but it still judders on take off it will only do it when it is warm and is fine when cold ,indie tech in milton keynes say they can fix it for 750 +vat with 2 yr warrenty i think this is the only option left .do you think cleaning the sensors can help me any help will be apperiated my car has done 109k oil was changed at 40k car has full audi history and i hav just changed it thanks.

I am surprised at how many of us comments possitevly on multitronic boxes. It is advanced and smooth yes, but reliable, dont think so. Look at this forum and two of my friends as well as my own experience. Three of us had our boxes replaced before 100 000km.
I have a A4 2.4 with serious shuderring. Audi will fix it at R86 000 (About US $12 300) I am however going to try the sensor cleaning tonight. Thanks.

same juddering problem with my A4 2.5TDi - 2004 so out of warranty (just) - 45k miles - Audi say it needs new gearbox control unit that they'll do FOC but also a clutch pack that will set me back £1235.
Unhappy so I called Audi customer services who say they have no record of my car or the fault being reported to them! Dealer due to call me back.
anyone had any joy with Audi if warranty is up? the oil change was done at 45k miles which didn't seem to concern them.

I have an A6 1.9 TDi Se Avant 2004 fitted with a multitronic box code GHQ type 01JB. The car was fine until Audi replaced a faulty brake light switch then it started what they called banging when setting off, in other words select drive and when you accelerate nothing happens untill 1100-1200rpm then you hear a loud bang and the car lurches forward and stalls. The longer you leave between trips the worse it is. Local audi centre took it on test and said they thought an oil change would cure it as it had the wrong oil in it. did the change and flush and no better than before, now they say it need a new auto box. Anyone had this happen to them, once you get it to drive away it performs ok.

Thanks

Hi.
I should have posted this a few days after my last post but forgot to do so.
Within 2 days of Audi changing the gearbox oil the problem slowly disappeared and within a week it had gone altogether. The box has behaved fine until last weekend when all the gear selection red lights started flashing all at once. Have been told it now needs a new g-box ECU.

sounds electrical too me, more than likely to be an ECU failure .....

erk...

I have the CVT and all the reviews I read before buying it indicated negligible difference in reliability between the CVT and manual.

I'm not having any real problems, but I'd be financially ruined if any of these problems rear their head in the next year :-S

A.

I bought a used 2002 A6 2.5 TDI CVT with 60k miles on the clock from a non Audi dealer, it came with a 6 month warranty. After a couple of weeks it began to judder during slight acceleration and during change down. I took it to a Bosch garage and they recommended the gearbox upgrade from the 6 to the 7 plate clutch.

My warranty underwriter agreed to pay and the garage performed the upgrade and took it along to an Audi main dealer for final programming(?)

My car is now on 115k miles and has not had any gearbox problems since.

I had the same issue on my old A4sport with a tiptronic trans. to cut a long story short.. After a £2500 bill and a trans that was still not functioning correctly (totally ripped off by the so call gearbox specialist) I actually found the problem was caused by water in the trans wiring connector. Common problem with the older A4. the pollen filter housing leaks and fills the passenger footwell with water. Right where the trans wiring runs.A replacement trans harness from Audi and a couple of days to fit it. Finally sorted.
This was just another nail in the coffin to take any of my cars to a garage. If at all possible i will do it myself.

It may be worth checking the multi connector on the trans first, just unplug it from the trans and see if there is any moisture or in my case drips of water. I could be a lot cheaper.

There are no set number of gears with the Multitronic. The gear ratio is constantly changing. see here :- Continuously variable transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and here multitronic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
