Thread: Checking a RNS-E mk2 is actually a RNS-E mk2

Hi everyone.

Just bought a RNS-E Mk2 to swap for the Mk1 in my '56 A3 Sportback. I just wanted to check that this Mk2 is actually a Mk2! Forgive me, this is the first Audi I've owned and not exactly clued up on all the difference.

From what I can work out, it would be a Mk2 because:

• It has a Media button
• It has a glossy surround
• It has the high-resolution screen
• It has the part number 8P0 035 193 G

Is there anything else I should be looking out for?

Hi there, if it has all of the things you mention above, then it is definitely a MK2 RNS-E and with the glossy black screen surround it is the 2011 version (8P0 035 193G) as opposed to the 2010 (8P0 035 193B), which has the matt surround. The MK1 RNS-E (8P0 035 192*) has a CD/TV button and it doesn't have chrome knobs. HTH x

Also the Mk2 uses SDHC cards up to 32gb each whereas the mk1 will only entertain sd cards (NOT HD) at 4gb max (I think) each.

Thank you for your replies. Would there be any issue with a 2011 model going in to a 2006 car that already has RNS-E Mk1? Also is there any difference, apart from the gloss/matt, between a 2010 and a 2011?

There would be no issues at all with fitting a MK2 RNS-E to an older car that already has the MK1 RNS-E fitted. It may need some coding, depending on if you have bluetooth, BOSE, multifunction steering wheel etc, ..but everything can be done via VCDS, with no additional wiring required. You're spot on with the 2010 and 2011 difference, ..only the glossy screen surround. I had a non glossy MK2 and swapped it over for a glossy one a month or 2 ago. Very simple job to swap over and code, took me 15 minutes at the most. The hardest part is getting the actual unit out of the dash, lol, but with the correct removal keys and a bit of pulling them outwards from the unit all at the same time, it will eventually come out. Thank you Paula. Forgive my ignorance, but what is VCDS and how easy is it to code? We pick the car up on Saturday and it already has bluetooth but not Bose or the multi function steering wheel.

mine has the cd/tv button and black knobs but its a mk2

You probably have a modded one, I have several A4 units with black knobs and CD/TV buttons, but they are media units.

i have that many get nicked around here thought it would be safer

Just to say Mk2 unit picked up and it's very good. Next stop, finding an AMI for not very much money.
