rs4 worth the money?

hi,

I am sure they are not even comparable, but I have an S3, but I very seriously thinking of getting an '07 RS4. found one for very good value, but I even good value is still big money!

Are they worth the money??

DOnt get me wrong, I love the quattro system on the S3, But I really wish it was more inclined to put power to the rear! Can anyone here let me know if this is the same system on the RS4?

Also, is the tonnes of extra power gonna kill the fuel consumption completely? Is the fuel consumption very bad? anyone have real life figures??

Hi There,

I was in the same position you were in earlier this year and I took the plunge and bought myself an 07 RS4 cabrio a few weeks ago. After owning an 06 Porsche 911 C4S cabrio for a year, I can say that the RS4 is truly amazing compared to the Porker. The handling and power takes your breath away and I can't speak more highly of it! Fuel consumption is not too bad - I managed to get just under 300 miles to the tank on a drive from London to Liverpool and in-town driving, I manage to scrape about 240 miles to the tank..and that is with having quite a lot of fun on the way!

What are the general running costs like on the RS4. Audi seem to jack the prices up disproportionately for any engine daring to use more than 4 cylinders.

Hi There,

So far, things haven't seemed too bad. I am using Audi Amersham to maintain the car, and the next big service will be the 40,000 miler. The car so far has about 26k on the clock. They have said that I am roughly looking at an outlay of about £1200 for the service.

What I will do to protect myself though is purchase an extended warranty on the RS4 in July when the car is 3 years old. It costs £1600 but the problem with these cars is that if something goes wrong, you are truly stuffed so in my opinion, it's a worthwhile expenditure for the peace of mind. Expensive...but at least I will sleep better at nights knowing that if something goes wrong, it will be covered.

£1,600 for a warranty, £1,200 for a service is mega money, I'd save the £1,600 in a just in case savings account and use a specialist. TBH the mpg you are quoting isn't a million miles from a tuned S3, I average 22.3mpg on my mainly short journeys.

I think I really need to scratch the RS4 itch !!

Totally different 4WD drive system to the S3, as its a Torsen system as oposed to Haldex - mechancal vs. Haldex, and it's a permament 40:60 split in favour of the rear.

Weak point on the B7 RS4 is the DRC system so you either want a warrnaty or budget for swapping in for aftermarket coilys in the form of PSS9's or coilovers, although Audi extended the warranty on this to 5 yrs. Also, although they make the published numbers for on-road performance, don't put one on a dyno as you'll just be dissapointed.

I have to ask this as curiosity killed the cat. Before I do, can I state I would have an RS4 over my car without a second thought as it is by far the superior performance car and not a shopping trolley in drag!

A little while ago, with stage 2 (not plus), and an intake - no exhaust system (probably running no more than about 320bhp), I had a drag with an RS4 on a straight road on a winter bank holiday (e.g. no cars about). We were side by side, and neither pulling anything on the other (maybe the RS4 was inching it to be fair). I did wonder about the fabled 420bhp and whether that was more like high 300's plus some extra weight making my performance more equal (in a straight line).

Sure it would have hammered me in the twisties, but I just thought it would be quite a bit quicker in gear. I remember reading a thread about some tuning company or individual approaching Audi about cars not reaching their defined quote BHP figures. Was this ever resolved to a point of satisfaction?

Actually I have been told the same many times about the 4 not making the power, still a blinding car though and the sound is just sex.

i have heard this myself. there was a thread not sure if it was tobycruise or something about s3 vs rs4. ON aside someone said something about audi being sued in america as rs4's were making nowhere near the claimed output. I thinkk even amd were saying they had never seen an rs4 make over 380-390bhp

There was a long thread on rs246 about this, where the owner did take legal action. I think it may have been settled before it went to court, but it did appear that Audi took the car back.

One of the best sounding cars I've heard for a long time though - B7 RS4 with non-res Milltek.

I got my car sorted power wise, it required a vacuum leak sorting and an ecu update. Whether they make the quoted figures or not, and this is a huge debate with no real evidence either way, the car is fast, leaves most cars I play with behind and on a twisty road, point to point there isn't much else on the roads thats as good, regarldless of the weather... the best thing is the ability to use the power 90% of the time.

The DRC issue is another overstated point. Mine has been replaced 3 times in 56k miles. The last replacement was a newly manufactured part and it seems to have sorted it now. Even if it does go, there is a 5 year 75k warranty on the DRC.

I would say brakes are more annoying then the DRC, make sure you monitor the pad wear, and don't rely on the wear light, as by the time it comes on, you might need new disks...
