    RS3 not starting straight away

    Evening All,

Over the past couple of weeks I've noticed the car seeming to take longer to fire up than normal, not all the time but still noticable when it happens, now what I have noticed is when I open the drivers door from unlocking there is no priming of the fuel pump like used to happen on my S3, could this be whats causing this 'delay' in firing up ?

Im sure its only started since the updates were applied when it went into Audi for the service.

Does everyone else's fuel pump prime on getting in ?

My fuel pump primes when the ignition is turned on. Not sure if it has always been that way though.

I have noticed some longer crank times in the past also.

Mine starts first time, every time. Hope you get it fixed OK. I've noticed a few things have been reset after a trip to the dealers - maybe get a vagcom and take a look at the settings...

Oh it starts fine everytime its just now and again (mainly mornings) it seems to need more cranking before it fires, the fuel pump primes when key is turned in ignition, only thing i can think of is sometimes fuel pump isn't priming maybe ?

I am almost certain the S3 primed pump as you unlocked and opened the door

I have VCDS so i'll check it tonight see i there are any fault codes or maybe a setting has been altered when they did the updates.

I suspect this is a marketing decision! My TTS also pre-primed the system when you opened the driver's door and so started more quickly than my RS3 does. I think they want to make turning over the engine part of the 'ritual' of the car. They have deliberately made the S-Tronic change gear more 'roughly' for the same reason, as understand it.

I've not noticed any delay, there is a noise as I open the drivers door that could be the fuel pump priming but I'm not 100% sure.

Exactly MBK !!!! thats what i used to get on the S3 and I'm sure it was the same on the RS3 until the updates were done, drivers door open fuel pump would prime, i've a feeling something has been reset or switched off by the updates Audi applied when it was in for the 1st servive.

Seems a strange thing to switch off, I can only wonder if it has anything to do with the fueling problem some cars had standard and others have reported on remapping. It's hard to make a direct connection but this ecu does seem to have a mind of its own sometimes.

I'm 99% certain my RS3 has never done this. My TTS did and so I know what I would be listening for.

MY TTRS suffers from the same problem, if i release the ignition key and soon after crank it up again it takes even longer for the engine to get going.

Mine always makes a noise when I open the door, I didn't know what it was, but I assume its as described and its the pump.

Maybe we could start a poll, who's fuel pump primes on unlocking and opening the drivers door and who's doesn't !

Mine doesn't anymore put it that way.

May have to plug the Vag-com into the hyperdrive to find out whats wrong

You were spot on with noticing this, since the Haldex ECU update yesterday my car no longer primes the fuel pump on opening the door (no whirring noise). As others have said the pump now primes on ignition - turn the ignition on but don't start the car and you will hear the same whirring noise..

Thank You MBK ! now i know i'm not going mad !!

The question is why would the haldex update affect this ? Strange

It was called a haldex 'recall' but who knows what they really mess with. I did ask why my car wasn't recalled and this was done at a random service if it's a true recall! I didn't get an answer. No idea why this change has been made and not much point asking the dealer, they know nothing other than it's an ECU update.

One other thing I've noticed is cruise is now hunting more - slight dip and then increase in speed for no obvious reason. I use cruise a lot on the motorway as there are often camera vans about around here.

Mine doesn't Sean, never has (a June 2011 build date) and has always cracked up on the first attempt...

In for it's second service next Monday (23rd September) at Stafford Audi, brakes too so will report ALL findings. Only 'upgrade' at date was the 46F8 "exchange of the front opening right for more air flow to the brakes" - still not sure why Audi bothered to do that and if they would say I doubt I'd believe them...

Note: in my experience the offside front brake squeal was more pronounced than that from the nearside brake which tended to 'squeal' only in sympathy after the offside brake began!

Again, just driven an RS3 with the 47i6 brake upgrade, the pads being properly bedded in I might add - and found the brakes to be very good; good feel and bite, ok with a slightly softer but similar pedal travel to my own original brakes. One aspect that was noticable however was the noise; the 47i6 set-up is much quieter in a 35mph sudden application of the brakes, interesting...

Mine always did it this way (by turning the ignition key), never when unlocking the door. I also noticed that if I don't wait for the noise (and the dials to go all the way and back), the engine will take longer to start.

So John, you going for the brake warranty upgrade or sticking with your original fix?

    Hey Marcus,

I've been persuaded by Martin Sander's (now fled to the US, tsk!) explanation to me (I nailed him at Goodwood, and liked the guy lots) of the changes to have the 47i6 upgrade done.

Now I've driven a number of RS3's, one yesterday, and find that with the upgrade done and once the bedding-in procedure has been undertaken properly, that the 47i6-upgraded brakes seem the same as the originals in day-to-day driving.

That said, I shall be retaining my original components (all perfect at date with no complaint at all) and if necessary will swap/evaluate the original brake pads with the revised brake discs and calipers though to be honest, having driven a recently upgraded RS3 yesterday, my find that not necessary.

Oh, and I do have a set of Brembo sports pads on the bench, just in case.

So next Monday (23rd) Bluey goes into Stafford Audi for it's second service (at 5800-miles) and all upgrades where appropriate. I'll then religiously bed-in the 47i6 brakes as per the Brembo instruction.

Kelly Hathaway (Audi Customer Services manager) has promised to contact me later to learn of my evaluation and hopefully that will be positive.

Again, my current/original brakes are perfect for road use, with ZERO brake squeal, the Mintex self-adhesive anti-squeal shims being 100% effective; however, as my intention is to keep Bluey for some time it would be foolish of me not to have the 47i6 upgrade applied: and I do have the ability to make changes as and if necessary to satisfy my own driving characteristics.

So Marcus, Bluey, or the one and only Greater Knapweed coloured RS3 , is nervously awaiting the 23rd September -watch this space…

How many RS3s have you had your hands on now John?! You've probably got more experience than any Audi technician in the country and I'd certainly trust you more!

Looking forward to your feedback about the new brakes. Are you still on the Contis?

Got mine going in for a service next month, 19k miles under the belt and thoroughly loving it! Not sure I like the sound of this Haldex update and may decline until the fuel pump/starting issue is resolved...

She's cornflower blue John and you know it!

There is more to this learning ECU stuff again, for 2 days after the ECU update the cruise control was hunting between 69/70mph on the Motorway but now everything has returned to normal. They did change the plugs at the service but I can't imagine that was the cause.

If anyones fuel pump priming suddenly comes back to life let us know!

By prior arrangement Garry; while I'm persuaded to have the 47i6 upgrade fitted I've reserved the right to go back to my original set-up should I find the new components not to my liking.
