    Oil and coolant required.

    Hi gang.
Just completed a 600 mile round trip in the UK.
Mainly motorway cruising along with some A and B road blasting.
After checking the car (4 k miles) I found the oil and coolant level just about in minimum.
    Same with you guys?
    Cheers.

I know new motors can use more with the higher temps during a running in process.
just wondered if it was a known thing with this new 5 pot engine?

I've done about 5000 miles from new now.

My coolant has dropped to the minimum mark and I'm keeping my eye on it to see if it has "settled" or continues dropping.

My oil is about half way between max and min, so looks fine.

ALL engines 'like' to be worked hard!

Engines that don't get 'worked' generally develop glazed bores and develop high oil consumption and/or contamination from blow-by (spoken from 30-years experience in petrol/diesel engine (50 to 2000 BHP) design, development and test).

Now, one of the issues I have with the RS3 is that when I'm driving in 30/40/50mph restricted zones with the gearbox in 'DRIVE', the gearbox drops into 6th and/or 7th gear ratios far too easily and the load on the engine is greatly reduced - see paragraph one.

So I generally use the 'SPORT' mode in such restricted zones as this holds the gearbox in the 3rd and/or 4th gear ratios I'd normally expect with a manual gearbox. The added benefit for me is the car 'feels' more throttle/speed-controllable and the engine is working just that little bit harder.

OK, fuel consumption will be a little higher (mine has done 25.6mpg from new) but if the engine could talk, it would be a lot happier.

Note: I do this both with my 7-speed/DSG RS3 and 6-speed/DSG TT: the engine oil stays clean with consumption ZERO between changes. Neither do I have coolant loss issues.

My advice: work those RS3 engines a little harder.

I do certainly use all of the rev range when warmed up.
agree about S on the gearbox - quicker responding and better engine braking to.
    Will keep monitoring the levels.

I agree. Manual/Sport..Traction Control OFF only way.

Never been in Drive..cant see the point.

I like to build up a few credits, before giving it a belt.always av 28.5 mpg.
At the end of the day car has the final say if you forget to change down anyway.

Quick Q for those that might know.

As I only drive in Manual Mode.the Q is....... Which are quicker the Stick or the Paddles .

I nearly always use the stick,as the paddles seem very slightly slower.Am I imagining this, or is there a technical reason why this should be so.

    Oil and coolant required.

I never really noticed, I only use the stick in M when pulling out at junctions.

Shouldnt really use that much coolant tbh, oil maybe a bit as my S4 used to burn it like the Saudi's supply it, but coolant either had some air in system which has burped out now from factory which is highly unlikely for 5k miles now or something isnt quite right.

I hope you have better luck with them than I did - they've no idea why the coolant would fall having pressure tested it, have never heard of the brakes issue either so gave them a good clean as it might be brake dust - despite what I'd told them beforehand..... Total waste of time with them if I'm honest....

5k miles just ticked over on the clock and coolant is at normal level / just under 'Max' and oil is fine too.

The oil has never been a problem at all - never needed to top it up - but I've had to top up the coolant twice in 3400 miles.. The only thing they could guess it was 'its a new car and they do that sometimes'....

    "Oil and coolant required."

    Mines now at 4100 miles...

NO oil useage - and staying clean (so good piston to bore fit).

NO coolant loss - and staying clean (so good engine gasket sealing)

Mine was carefully run-in and is now being properly (but safely) used - as in last Monday's 250-mile (ish) blast into and out of Wales...

A GREAT motorcar... that is now being spoiled by incompetents...

    Hi all.

I have to say the car has been faultless to date.

Thanks for the replies / info on the coolant & oil.
i will naturally be keeping a closer eye on them.
At service time I will mention that they were low and needed topping up.

Brakes - a slight squeak sometimes but not a "problem" amount of noise.
A good hose down of the calipers during a clean every Sunday is usually enough.
the amount of dust that comes off is surprising sometimes.
The brakes are stunning by the way.

    Oil and coolant required.

5000 miles in and zero loss of oil.

Loss of coolant from 500 to 2000 miles, system left pressurised over a weekend, no further loss since.

1mm run out on both front disks recorded at 4700 miles, disks and pads replaced under warranty, second set bedded perfectly an feeling spot on (already squealing though)

Engine is brutally strong so much so it ate a prop shaft last weekend; prop replaced, bearing on the new prop redesigned.

    Awesome car.

Well mine has been in for the last two days with coolant loss. It was pressure tested last night and lost 1/2 bar overnight. They said this wasn't a major leak but that it was more than they would like so it stayed in for some endoscope treatment!

Hope they find out what the coolant issue is for you! Have they checked the brakes yet? Mine are squealing already again unsurprisingly...

They told me they haven't bothered looking at the brakes as they know there will be a fix from Audi at the end of March, either a fix or an update anyway.

Yeah keep an eye on it for sure, mine has only done 3500 miles and it is a couple of mm below the lowest minimum mark when cold.

Well mine is on the way back to me now. After pressure testing for a second night there were no losses whatsoever despite a 1/2 bar loss the first night. They have topped it up and it is to be monitored..

1/2 bar loss seems a fair bit of loss overnight tbh, mine lost this recently with a substantial rad corner leak, think they need to keep it & run it for a few days.

I thought it was quite high to be honest but they weren't worried by all accounts. Apparently they have equipment to simulate the running of the cooling system without the engine running (a bit like a heart bypass I guess lol). They think it was possibly an air lock but you never know when you are being bullsh*tt*d IMO.

Hmmm.. So Warrington Audi have now had two RS3's in within a week - Both with coolant loss and they can't find anything wrong with either of them.... So genuinely where is the coolant going then?

No idea lol, I have heard of others coolant issues disappearing after pressure testing so hopefully that will be the end of it! You can hope!

The tool is just a pressure tester, whereas just screws onto the coolant reservoir & they pump 1.5 bar of pressure into the coolant system which simulates & then that should be enough to find leaks, worrying if its air locks on new cars & by looks of it a few now.

Sorry I should advise I dont run an RS3, but the same system is used to do the pressure test on the 8P's.
