FORMER Wales striker John Hartson says doctors have told him hes winning his fight against cancer.
The 34-year-old father of three who now lives in Skewen, near Neath, has already undergone more than 50 sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy plus two brain operations since being diagnosed with the disease.
And after a scan and consultation with specialists in Swansea on Wednesday he was told he will still have to undergo operations to remove tumours.
I am almost out of the woods, though. This is my brightest day for a long time. The scan has been hugely encouraging. Im determined to grit my teeth to get over the final hurdle and win this battle.
This is not over, though. I still have a lump at the back of my brain and one on my lung and I know they will require surgery.
Hartson was forced to admit himself to Singleton Hospital in Swansea this summer after being hit by mindblowing headaches.
Days later doctors told him he had testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.
After months of treatment the divorcee announced his plans to marry pregnant fiancée Sarah McManus, 37, at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel next summer.
His children Joni, six, Rebecca, 10, and 17-month-old Lina will there.
Weve all been through so much and to get the news from the doctors that the cancer is going from me is just fantastic.
Hartson, who played for Luton, Arsenal, West Ham, Wimbledon, West Brom, Celtic and Coventry, has been advising men to check themselves for signs of testicular cancer.
He candidly admitted he left it too late, first suspecting he might have a lump in the groin area four years ago. He eventually went to hospital helped by his sister Victoria only because his headaches became so bad.
He said: The headaches saved me but I left it too late.
People who go early after seeing a lump can go in and out in one day and be fine.
The former player turned pundit also set up the John Hartson Foundation a testicular cancer awareness and support group.
Hartson was capped 51 times by Wales and scored 14 goals making him Wales ninth-top scorer of all time.
He said: I have so much to live for with my kids and with my partner Sarah pregnant again theres so much to look forward to. Ive had so much support from fans and those inside football and that has been a constant source of comfort to me.
