    A little update:

So many things differ between an I4 and V6 B5, as far as installing the V8 goes.

    1) Mounts - new custom mounts made to integrate V8, different from V6 base car.
    2) Subframe - tranny n/s bracket needs to be cut off, and V6 one welded in place.
    3) Tranny n/s mount - being replaced with V6 bracket, to allow n/s catalyst to fit.
    4) Airbox - 1,8T unit has intake facing front of engine, being replaced with V6 item.

Car is now running, for some reason though, the S8 immo would not code to the B5's key and immo box, so a different approach was needed.

It involved obtaining a B5 ECU, immo box and key from a junkyard. All came from a 1998 A4 2,8 quattro. The immo box was then plugged into the car, the transponder removed from the new key (was glued in, what a b4stard it was to remove). Finally, the immo processor was carefully desoldered from the 2,8 ECU, and soldered in place of the old one in the S8's ECU. Voila!

Had a scary moment last week - the fuel filter decided to spring a leak of major proportions. It was so rusty, I was surprised it held pressure up to that point. It looked like a cylindrical brick, and after replacement, the injectors had to be removed, and taken for an ultrasonic clean. The fuel lines were then flushed through, before replacing the injectors, and firing her up.

Another issue...the cluster in a B5 is designed to work for either 4 or 6 cylinders. While the cluster in this particular B5 1,8T could be coded to work in a V6, a V8 wasn't an option. The C5 A6 uses the same basic cluster, and was available as a V8, but as the C5 came later than '96, which this B5 was, fitting one wasn't an option, unless a whole bunch of wiring was on the cards...

    ...It wasn't.

The existing cluster was pulled apart, and certain key components were replaced, (thank God for Maplins) so now works accurately.

A few pictures of progress so far:

    Rusty, porous fuel filter:

New harness in progress. Involves deleting massive auto trans ECU connector, auto trans tranny connectors, as well as configuring the S8 connectors to plug into the B5 chassis. They also needed to be extended from the left side of the scuttle, to the right:

    Engine mounts:

Front engine support bolted in place:

A little snag - the central plastic engine cover Paul ordered is off an earlier car, so the "V8" section is broader than mine, and fouls the expansion tank:

    Will be carefully trimmed tomorrow.

Picture showing the 1,8T airbox, with forward facing intake, where it would normally go to the turbocharger's cold side:

Will be replaced with a V6 item, as I'm loath to fit an induction kit. The ignition amplifiers and evap. purge valve can then be mounted on the upper cover. The S8's MAF sits within the airbox, pretty much like an AEB, but I'll be fitting it in a conventional manner, in series with the throttle body and airbox.

And be like every one else running a Camaro, right?

If you read the thread from the beginning, you'd realise it's not my car, though the V8 conversion mirrors my own, which is also a V8, albeit with a 6-speed manual and quattro drive.

Besides, I'm old enough not to be answerable to anyone but myself. I fitted a V8 to my own car, because I can. Again, I fitted a V8 to the blue B5, because I can, and the owner wants it.

Yes, because you're running or your customer are running a V8. Which is essentially the first thing anyone thinks of in terms of a swap. O let's get a 6L V8, supercharger that, and get 2mpg (sarcasm). Why not swap for some crazy engine no one has ever done? Why not stand out and strive to out do everyone, instead of dropping in a V8. O no it's another V8, miracle!

If that's the first thing that comes to people's mind, then their minds have a pretty narrow range of thinking. This is the United Kingdom, we don't run Camaros here.

If the cars produce 2mpg, and we can afford it, it's cool too!

As for standing out, being unique, where else in the UK has the S8 motor been installed into a B5 chassis? Lol @ "dropping in a V8". I'd like to see you "drop" one in - if it were that easy, there's be loads running around.

Miraculous? No. Unique and ground breaking? Yes.

Saying that, I'd truly love to see you better my efforts, with your BT 1,8T - if striving to outdo everyone's your bag, why is your car still running the stock engine, with everyday "tried and tested" mods?

Damn man you've got the worst case of verbal diarrhoea I've read in a while, you seem to have a habit of intentionally causing friction on this forum, why not help yourself by reading a bit more before opening what seems to be a very large hole in your face to gain the whole picture of, for instance, the reason for this thread, the last thread you were involved with reference to cold/hot air in an engine, also seemed to have your very inarticulated method of posting, I would advise you take another path/change of attitude with your posts on the forum before you alienate the members & the hierarchy

& for the record, I think Siena has already made it stand out by actually being able to fit this engine into this car & get it running, its not a plugnplay job, as you would have understood if you'd read the whole thread!!! Hint hint hint!!!!!

Its not always about having a different engine from everyone else or having the right to brag about my twin turbo's, its sometimes about the actual ability to do a particular conversion, whether its a V8 into a mini or as per this job, its about using the brain to get round problems which this thread has shown very much so, there's no fun or brainpower used just to plugnplay a V8 into any car is there for a trained person, but sticking one into a car that hasnt actually been designed to handle one at all, that takes apart from balls, a fairly good head on your shoulders technically to understands the challenges you face.

As Siena says, I'd like to see you do the same, I really would, cause even to swap immo's over is a challenge all by itself, let alone marrying up everything else.

Last thing on this, you seem to fail to realise that the UK is very very different to Canada, we dont all run round in V8's everywhere, big pickups, camarro's etc, so for us its not an everyday thing, so this is different overall.

PS. Siena, know that challenge with the poxy immo capsule in key, poxy things are glass & they are so well stuck inside the key that all you can do really is dremel the surrounding area out & alot of luck if it doesnt break huh, done myself

    Thanks, NHN.

Yes, the immo capsule is glass, I had to dremel the surrounding plastic, and use a soldering on it too, to shift it without cracking it.

Hey I have utter respect for people that actually challenge what most people would say was impossible, nothing in this world is impossible, it just takes time, money & effort, along with some brains does help, lol, so for me kudos to you mate, love watching these things come together, cause without these things happening in the world we would never move forward at the pace we do & innovation wouldnt be so prevalent, great work as always mate, ignore the idiots who obviously dont understand geographical differences & cant read.

Yeah I actually broke one capsule, luckily was 2nd one, 1st was a doddle tbh, 2nd I think was impatients which for me is unusual, as I have very good patients to do a job to the end usually, even if it takes me weeks, its usually thinking time used to find alternative ways to do a job fully & to a level of workmanship that makes me happy, call it anal but proof is in the pudding huh, lol.

    Top work Siena.

Surely a V8 into a B5 A4 is not common at all?!? I don't really understand where those comments were coming from?

You only need to look at the amount of hits that your threads have received to confirm that there is a massive amount of interest in this work.

The BOV makes the best noise, if you want noise then get yourself a recording of a Harley or something like that. iPod ftw!

Wow! I think you're completely missing the point. In the US and Canada I'm sure V8 powered cars are pretty common. Here in the UK, they're not... and there's a good reason for that!

Besides... apart from the two in this thread (Siena's and Dale's), how many Audi S8-V8 powered B5 A4's do you know of?

    Erm... thought so.

Its not about flaming, its just you have a slight attitude problem & very bad understanding of the differences between Canada & the UK

Maybe if you change your preferred method of discussing things on the forum then people will be more how can I put it, tolerant of you overall, just some advice & no you dont need to kiss upto everyone, just dont be such a bull in a china shop, I mean I'm known as blunt on here but you are very much above that.

Right this is your first and last warning. If you have nothing useful to say on the subjetc can you please not say anything at all. I edited your posts to remove all the rubbish that was ruining a perfectly good read.

Over here in the UK we have very few V8 cars and even less V8 B5's hence this build thread. I will also add to my knowledge no Harley makes a V8 sound...

The BOV is the kind of thing that is best left on a car where the managment is too stupid to care about the missing air from it's system, the Motronic system used on the VAG range notices the missing air and makes the car run like crap unless you are lucky.

Both catalysts fitted - it involved removing the subframe, grinding off the I4 left-hand tranny mount, and welding in a regular V6 item. The V6 item allows the V6 bracket to be used, and is on a lower level, same as the right-hand side.

The raised I4 set-up doesn't allow a catalyst / down pipe to fit, as the distance between the floow and bracket's way too tight. Catalysts now fit perfectly, just need to fab up a Y-piece to link both catalysts to the 2.5" single Milltek.

    Pictures will be up later.

Siena, shame you has to remove that subframe, i thought you would have to as i said on the phone. I am glad you bit the bullet tho and went with that as progress should be swift now.

Yes, it made sense to remove the subframe.

The 4 cylinder mount was ground off with the subframe lowered at the rear, bolted back in place, and the V6 item offered up, and bolted loosely to the rubber doughnut. It was then tacked in place, before I removed the subframe completely.

It was then seam welded properly, no way could you get to the top with the frame in situ.

Siena, outstanding work - again You're clearly very talented and unphased by a challenge. I know you're helping Paul out with th is one and the other guy with the S4 conversion, do you do this for a living? If not, I think you should.
