    Project RS28

Well, im working in Aberdeen just now but back for wkend so after collecting a few bits n bobs ive started on the Audi, just small and cheap mods for time being but plenty planned for future....

Started of cheap n cheerful, debadging the back end

    Before

    After

Then after seeing the idea here i removed and covered the B pillars in carbon film

Also used the excess on sum parts in engine bay, not perfect but u get the idea

Bought sum clear side repeaters for the sides to clean them up, but didnt realise how much bigger these ones were compared to originals!!!

Fitted them for time being anyway till i decide if they look too stoopid!!! Might get normal clears to replace them, wot u think???

Picked up a genuine Quattro badge cheapish as i thought the front needed something on the grille, too plain.

And the gaffer checking everything is being done to a good standard to "the wee Audi" as she calls it! lol

Still had some carbon film left so found sumthin else to do, covered the lower bumper grille uprights like the facelift bumpers style, all black.

Thats it for time being, manged to track down sum facelift rear lights and changing the side badges on wings to sumthin different, hopefully clean the look up. Ordered a single wiper kit, but neighbour had to take delivery for me and now on holiday so will have that next time im back. Also got new interior trims for doors etc to replace wood, lookin to do a custom paint job but not sure what yet, ponder over that in meantime. Bigger mods to come soon, once i sell another car i have. Cheers.

Its always the simple things that make them look best. I too had the same dilema with the repeater, and in the end i went crystal clear, as the LED ones looked funny and the Clear ones looked like erect n*pples.

    Cheers mate.

Wot kind of repeaters do you have then, standard clear oem look? Do you have a pic? The ones i fitted are crystal type with the filter, never liked the look of the led type, too over the top lookin.

Don't get ripped off for clear sides. My local car modding place wanted £18 for a set, Halfrauds wanted £16. A trip to Euro Car Parts had me with a pair for just about £5.

    Nice mods.. looking good.

I had the same with a set of side repeaters and the profile was too bulky. I replaced them with a set from Awesome GTI but can't remember how much they were (couple of years ago).

Right, after a bit of scouring i managed to find the more normal profile crystal clear side repeaters thanks to Byzan A4, cheers mate. Prefer these as they compliment the facelift front lights better than standard clear/whites. Set of excellent condition facelift rears due here tomorrow aswell, so all lights will be cleared up soon. Got the single wiper kit aswell now, but seeing as its pi$$ing down here today doubt i'll get it fitted soon. Also waiting on a set of S4 style sideskirts in post after ordering them at weekend, not genuine Audi but that doesnt matter as i dont plan on fitting them like standard S4 look. Off again tonight to work so prob wont have an update for a week or 2, but more parts will be ordered by then, keep u's posted!

I personally don't think a single wiper conversion suits the B5, or indeed any modern car with semi-concealed wipers.

Probablt works best on an older car, like a Golf I / II, or Escort III / IV where the wipers are mounted externally (non-recessed).

Well, another wkend home, and plenty of parts starting to gather now, excellent. Unfortunately, not a lot of time to work on car due to only being back a couple of days and having to spend sum time with family, so slow progress at this stage.

Started with removing the rest of the rear towbar that was fitted, as it was an audi specific fit unit, it uses a new rear bumper bar with the towing section as part of it, so now on the look out for a standard rear bumper bar if anybody has one??? So rear bumper is staying off for time being.

I also fitted the facelift rear lamps that i dug up, which were in great condition.

    Before

    After

Before i found the facelifts, i had an idea for modding the original rear lights which i still completed although ive now fitted the new ones. But after seeing how they turned out, im really impressed with them, went for the all red look like newer Audi models.

    Before

    After

Couple of coats of laquer to give a nice finish and really like them, not tried them on the car, but think they would suit a red or black car best. Not decided wot to do with them, might try them on at sum point, or could be swayed to sell them for a good offer, wot u think???

Away for another fortnight tomorrow, so by time im back i should have taken delivery of a nice new front bumper, and few more bits and pieces, more updated soon people!

No mate, was just a tin of red tint spray for lights, just like watered down paint really so they still emit light etc. Took a couple of slow build up coats to get the red to match the sides of the units, then all over, and 2 coats of lacquer to bring up a shiny finish and protect them. Really came up good, didnt expect to get the red a match all over!

Okay, started at dismantling my wiper system etc, to then transfer components over to single kit, but looks to be wrong type...So awaiting response on returning for correct part.
Weather isnt so good so not getting much done, but did try one of the red rear light lenses back in to see how they look, i like the look of it.

    Facelifts

    Custom rears

If weather holds up tomorrow i'll look at fitting the pair and wait till the bumper is back on till i decide which i prefer. Currently working on the side wing badges to give a new look instead of plain Audi badge, will get pics up when theyre done!

Well as i wont be changing wings etc at the moment, i decided on doing sumthing with the badges under the indicators, looking plain and dated now.

Picked up sum very fine metal badges on the bay el cheapo!

Started by using a grinder to get rid of lip on badges and take sum of the bevel out of them

Once smoothed off with wet n dry, they were coated in primer

Then painted in Satin Black for the new base

Then the new badges applied ready for a lacquer coat to protect them

After about 3-4 coats of lacquer, job done

Just need some backing foam to then put between badges and wing when re-installing. Not amazing, but should clean up the look and are a bit different to originals.

Back again. More stuff to clutter up house with since ive been away.

Was gonna do a custom paint job or sumthin on interior trims, but ended up finding this stuff, so now goin this route.

Its carbon fibre cloth, very nice looking and very easy to shape and work with. Will be doing sum bits n pieces with it soon.

Some S4 sideskirts patiently waiting, bodywork is on hold till i get the Audi in the garage, Cosworth is still there at the moment, so until i decide wot to do with it or sell it i'll just be gathereing parts ready to start it.

Carbon fibre look gearknob and new leather gaitor, supposed to be red stitched, waiting on correct replacement coming

Finally got the smaller side repeaters after long postage delay, and some white led bulbs for number plate lights

Also, just managed to find a facelift bootlid so now waiting on that

Also placed the order for a new front bumper, Dietrich RS4, will take around a fortnight to arrive

Looking good - is there a way to delete that swage line / step on the bumper? That's the only aspect that'd I'd like to change, if it were going onto my car.

    Cheers Siena!

Ive always thought this myself, think this was moulded on the later spec a4 bumper as this seems to have the same line. I have an idea of how to try delete it, but might be a lot of work in it, but seeing as im in no hurry, im definately going to attempt it. Will have a better idea when i recieve bumper, keep u's posted and will do a step by step if its possible to do.

Good stuff, look forward to more updates from Outlaw then!

Ok, been keeping things under wraps for a while, but seeing as this is a build thread i suppose i better start revealing some planned mods.

Well, being a Recaro lover i couldnt go with any other seats, and after seeing everybody choosing the Pole Positions which look great, i decided on going different and keeping a reclining seat for the car instead of fixed back. So im goin for Recaro Speed seats in Ambla black leather to match rest of interior.

Sometime nearer end of the year i imagine i'll get these.

Also, decided on a set of wheels that probably havent been fitted to an A4 yet, that i know of, but still seeking information etc on them at the moment to see if this is going to be possible. Dare Drift RS wheels

I like the deeper centre look of the wheels, will find out soon hopefully if these are possible.

S4 sideskirts to be fitted, but will be removing the lower weather strips from doors, looks too cluttered and prefer skirts themselves.
Sorry, best pic i could find!

Theres going to be a mix of carbon fibre parts on outside and inside, going for an oem/track hybrid look. Firstly, ive went for a carbon spoiler for rear

I also have a carbon diffuser for rear in mind, but is meant for a B7 S4 so would have to go twin exit exhaust for this which i already had in mind, but now thinking maybe late S4 rear with single exit.....just means i wont have the diffuser to compliment the spoiler, still debating this one, opinions welcome aswell.

Also thinking of a carbon fibre bonnet vent from a Mitsibushi Evo, no the massive one, the smaller scoop to the side of it.

Other small bits n pieces in between but will update them as i go. Presently working on sum homemade carbon fibre door and dash trims, will get the progress up soon! Cheers.

Okay, still slow progress due to work and weather. Anyway, managed to finally get the single wiper grafted in, i say grafted as after waiting wks for help from manufacturer on paperwork that wasnt included i bit the bullet and altered a few bits to get it to fit, had i known it wouldve been such hassle id have left it, but seeing as i paid for it and can be quite determined i just got on with it. Have to re-drill the mounting point on the plastic scuttle so once its looking good i'll get a pic up.

Found a facelift bootlid described as good condition, but when arrived the usual bootlock plate was badly corroded and a nice big dent in the curve of the bootlid meant it was useless to me

So i'll just hang onto my own and deal with the very small dent and maybe do something with the swage line on it.

Finally got my smaller side repeaters fitted with new wing badges i made up

Will get some pics of these when i can as car hasnt moved in a bit. Also sourced a standard rear bumper bar and fitted bumper again with both of the red rear lenses, although may have a new rear bumper to replace it aswell, find out soon.

Ready to start work on deleting the swage line on the RS4 bumper next and also some custom carbon fibre parts, updates and pics to follow.

Have done mate, in the process of a refund so not a complete loss. My own has no rust at all so will keep it and work on it to smooth it a bit.

Mirrors, badges, lights look good, However not a fan of the single wiper conversion at all! each to their own though.

Hmmm... I'm quite liking the single wiper

    a) was it hard to do?

    b) does it clear the screen okay?

    c) was it expensive?

The single wiper needs to be an aero wiper really. It would look a lot lot better like that then.

I think your car will look great with the RS-style front bumper, especially in red, very remniscent of Missano Red.

The single wiper...no. I was curious to see how it'd turn out, and as I thought, to me, it doesn't suit cars with semi-concealed wiper arms.

Overall, the car's looking good though.

    a) Involved some modifying of the linkage i bought supposedly for that purpose, also had to modify centre mount on scuttle of car.

    b) Clears screen fine, but as said, maybe an aero blade would be better as the screen curves quite a bit at bottom.

    c) Linkage cost around £45 and everything else was my own work, i'd personally look at modifying your own linkage thou, as the unit i bought seemed to be for a different layout, had issues with linkage on wrong side, fouling battery, fouling brake servo etc, but made it fit myself.

Agree it wont be to everyones taste, and find it a bit weird at first myself as usually had them on Escorts etc, but will start to fit in with some more mods later. And will be altering the park position to pass side, just easier to have it there in pic first time. Thanks for comments.

Yep, the mirrors had some lacquer peel on one side so decided to rub them down and plastic prime them then used some Halfords aluminum paint, came up really good for a quick job.

Off for a few days for Sept wkend so gonna get busy next few days, hopefully have all the kit prepped and primed soon, will get some updates by tomorrow probably. S4 rear bumper finally here too, wahey!!!

Got some more done with bumper, been taking a while but getting there now.

After fibreglass it was 2 coats of filler to smooth it all out

Then more wet and dry all over to get the shape right

In between all this, i nipped out and picked up a Cupra R splitter to finish it all off when its complete

    First coat of plastic primer

Then used red for 2nd coat for base when paint is applied

Then done a quick first coat with some paint i had lying about, i wont be doing the finishing coats, will be getting the lot done professional as i dont have the materials for that kind of finish.

Took up a lot of time aswell so will prep the sideskirts and rear bumper soon ready to go for paint the next fortnight or so due to work again. Will carry on with wheels when i get a chance in between.

Well ive finally managed to start work on the car again and got on with making some carbon fibre parts. Found this site when searching a few months back http://www.carbonmods.co.uk/

So ordered the skinning kit to do my door and dash trims. After buying a set of poverty spec trims to carry out task on, i started by removing the metal front casings

Simple enough using a pair of pliers and bending the tabs on the rear back to remove the metal, which exposes a relatively, flat, smooth plastic trim ready for paint etc as i was originally considering.

Next, i sanded all parts with 120 grit paper to key the base area for a good contact to apply base coat onto.

Once every area where the carbon fibre would be applied was keyed, i then mixed up the base coat with hardner and slowly applied a smooth, even coat to all parts

At this stage, the base coat should be left around 3hrs to dry to a tacky finish ready for next stage....cue the Indian menu selection, and a bit of Harry Hills TV Burb!

Okay, now well fed and watered, this was the tricky bit. Best idea is to pre cut all pieces of carbon fibre, oversized to each part, before you start. Then, probably needing a 2nd person, you need to lay the carbon fibre slowly, and softly so as not to disturb the weave or open any gaps, then work from the middle out and run your hand gently over all areas to get it to bond. You can then trim the excess at the rear leaving about an inch to fold back and tape onto rear of parts.

The most tricky part was the large dash piece due to shape where the cut out is.

^^^You can just see the two cuts that i had to make where the trim has the cut out section, this was vital so that the weave would not pull and distort when wrapping this section around the back of the trim.

So now i have all the door and dash trims covered, but one or two had some base coat come through slightly on top of the carbon, so i left these overnight to dry properly and also it was after midnight and the mrs was giving me evils so decided to leave it there for the night

Will continue today with applying the next few layers of top coat before lacquering and polishing to a nice shiny finish, update later on tonight!
