    My car's manual quattro.

The S8 motor is auto, but the cranks are the same. There's a recess in the crank boss, after removing the boss that supports the torque converter.

The S8 / V8 flywheel incorporates the spigot bearing.

Lightweight V8? They picked it up the way you and I would pick up a mini angle grinder. Hmmm...

Whilst waiting for a flywheel to turn up, have been doing some measurements and comparisons, between my S8 motor, my current V6, and of course, the B5 engine bay.

Have also been comparing this B5 S4, fitted with a 4.2L V8, as a test bed pre-B6 S4, to my car. And was pleasantly surprised...

Most noteworthy is the TT-style grille, which I most certainly do NOT like, as well as the front panel modifications.

It appears it's been cut, then the centre section has been moved forwards about 2", to allow more room for the aircon condenser, radiator and viscous fan.

So, the bonnet must have had some pretty drastic surgery carried out - removal of the integral grille frame, and relocation of the catch to match the new position on the front clip.

My car doesn't have aircon - the S8 motor certainly has an aircon compressor on it, but it'll be serving a different function in my car, more on that later.

I'm also not running the factory viscous fan / pulley, which adds another 3"+ to the engine's overall length. I'm going to try installing the S8 motor as far back in the chassis as I can.

    We'll see how she goes.

That's the way I want to fit mine - further back than in the white car, with no cutty-cutty-joiny-joiny.

I've seen the Canadian one on another site.

Folk were sceptical, because he took a hammer to the bulkhead.

    It's on www.scaudi.com

I thought I'd get the S8 motor out today, remove the covers, degrease and refit.

I also replaced both rocker cover gaskets, and camshaft seals, there was a lot of crusty oil behind the timing belt, which I also replaced.

I also picked up a couple of spare exhaust manifolds, which will be reworked to take a pair of turbochargers. That'll be done later, without having to disturb the engine whilst it's in the car.

    Spare exhaust manifolds...

S8 motor looking a lot cleaner. Surprisingly, I was able to get it out of the garage on my own, and back. Definitely lighter than the cast-iron 2,7L V6 30V Biturbo...

Note the size of the throttle body, with twin-butterflies.

There'll be no issues getting more air through those beauties, come turbocharging time...

    It's a 1998 B5 S4.

It was a test bed, Cosworth Technology did the install on behalf of Audi, to prepare for the V8-engined B6 S4.

Interestingly, it was registered in 2000, and the tax expired a year later, and has never been renewed.

I believe the car was just a dummy run. It was supplied by Audi, though I'm not sure if it was ever a running car.

Unfortunately no, I was curious too.

Must have had a TT-style grille, and the bonnet must had had the grille frame deleted.

I don't like the look at all.

Hmm interesting manifolds, they look quite easy to modify for a turbo manifold, out of interest what size blowers will fit in the confined space between the block and the inner wings it looks tight!!

you say you want to install the engine further back which is a good idea, but are you not limited by the position of the front drive shaft flanges on the gearbox?
what is different about the gear box you are using, is it shorter front to back or are you chopping something?

Further back, as in so I don't have to use a grille like in the white car, or chop my front panel.

The difference in driveshaft angles is very little, if not the same.

    I'm using a stock 2001 S4 6-speed box, an 01E / DSY unit.

ye i dont understand how you can move the engine further back due to the gearbox flange positions either

you can make the engine shorter, which is what it seems your suggesting by removing the VCfan etc, but to move it back would mean moving the gearbox back too and creating lots of new mounts for it, and unless your ditching the quattro that doesnt really seem possible?

The 6-speed propshaft is shorter than the 5-speed one.

    You won't lose quattro.

The V8 needs custom mounts anyway, so no shaking.

I'm using a single mass flywheel, which means the 4" spacer used on the S4 / RS4 WON'T be needed. An extra 4" gained.

I'm glad I didn't go the 40V RS6 motor - apart from being horrendously expensive (about 5,000 complete on ebay) it's also a lot wider than the 32V motor!

Easier to build a 32V Biturbo, otherwise. Just been in contact with a Greek guy, installing an RS6 motor into a B5 Af quattro.

The engine's practically jammed against the bulkhead.

My lord that RS6 engine looks a bit of a squeeze, hats off to him though for managing it! Little bit of work gone into that!

Wondering where the air filters are gonna fit?! And how the bonnet fits now!

Brilliant that Kostas is trying to get that RS6 engine to fit, but aside from the kudos of doing it and having something so unique, I don't really see the point.

There's people getting over 700bhp from the 2.7T setup these days, and that's a tried and tested fit. I'll bet that guy is having many sleepless nights!
