its called a "rig" shot......here are the basics.......a long pole.....roughly 5 metres is attached to the car via suction cups and or clamps. The camera is attached to the end of this pole.
As you can imagine, a 5 mtre pole with a huge camera on the end will bounce and flex like a bloody bungee cable!.....so it needs to be attached in a way that it eliminates some of this. An invisible tether is used (fishing wire.....shhh trade secret there)
then....start to push the car....dont have it running as even engine vibrations will cause camera shake.
when car is moving, remotely trigger the camera or set it on self timer with a long exposure setting....for this one we used 30 secs!

Like this....camera attaches to the end of the pole..
You do a long exposure shot which leaves the shutter open for a longer time then push the car slowly. Anything thats in frame and static will stay in focus, anything thats moving such as the back ground, lights etc will be blurred. Photoshop out the rig after and job done!.
Long exposures are great fun...
Same principle as this shot I took ages ago when I first tried long exposures..
Its just that in the lovely pic of the Audi the cars the still bit in the frame and the back grounds blurring.....opposite to my shot but same principle.

great pic mate both shots looks awsome
both shots are now gonna get used as my desktop background, fantastic work lads
DriveByShooters thanked for this post
Very nice shot mate and doesn't look like much movement in the rig. i've recently bought some cups and clamps to make a rig but am struggling with flex in the pole, My friend is in the process if making me one from ally box section which will hopfully overcome this somewhat. I will try the fishing line trick though, good tip.![]()
very cool shoot!
the exposures is charming!
I just don't get with these rig shots how such a long exposure doesn't result in any blur!
Good job!

Awesome shot's but i'd be terrified to put my camera on "A rig "but it definetly looks worth it.
Ive saw alot smaller rig's for wheel shot''s and stuff, What price do these usually sell for?
Its a good way to upgrade your camera if it falls off!!! Claim on the insurance LOL!!!

It's only a matter of time bud... I just bought this one and this one. New body, another L series and some new filters on the way too. ...And here was me thinking the A3 was a pricey toy :s
I've told myself I'm not putting the new lenses on anything until the new body arrives. I'm struggling to keep to it.
The best of luck bud!![]()
