The 400D is a fairly ok peice of kit but IRRC it was replaced by the 450D which has also been dicontinueCanon 500D is a fantastic camera that will do anything you want and is a lot of camera for the price. You may also consider the 550D.

I would get into a camera shop and see what you like the feel of tbh. I would say canon 500d, but then i am a canon man,LOL
