My old corsa VXR... I will miss her

MY S3 REPLACES THIS ON 29/12/12, I WILL MISS HER BUT THE AUDI IS IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE. :-)

COPIED MY PROGRESS THREAD FROM ANOTHER FORUM SO SOME PARTS MAY SEEM A BIT IRELIVENT TO THIS SITE...

So here is my progress thread (which is well overdue) from my first post to now.(some photos are off my phone and print screened off Facebook so sorry about the black lines).

My first post on here was the usual background checks as you do... After reading the very useful user guide created by TomY2K, I decided to get looking at the corsa VXR.

I found what seemed to be the perfect corsa VXR at an Evans Halshaw garage on the net.
I went to my local Evans Halshaw(Ford) and asked them if they'd bring it up for me to have a look at the car.
After all the arguing about a deposit to put down on the car before I saw it they agreed to ship the car up and a few days later I went to my local Evans Halshaw garage and there she was...

Arden Blue (the best colour), 18inch wheels, sight and light pack.

It was parked under the flood lights and I instantly fell in love, there wasn't a mark on it other than a slight kerb mark on one wheel.

I spent ten minutes checking the car, looking for ammo to knock down the already cheap price. There was nothing, so off I went with the sales man and took the motor for a test drive and again, I fell in love.
Coming from a fiesta ST, the power delivery was so much more and many said the corsa handled badly compared to the fez but I couldn't feel that much difference.

After the test drive came the hard part...

An hour and a half of me basically saying "NO, far to much money per month".
The salesman said they'd do a one off only offer if the regional manager would allow it.

FINALLY... The words I wanted to hear, "yes, we can do it at that price".

A very long week later after the car had been fully valeted and serviced, the day came to pick her up. I was ssssooooooo excited.

Straight home and some first pics...

Then time to get the first mod... Surprisingly they came within a couple of days...

VXROnoline stickers... Set the car off a treat... And they're free...

My next mod was to try and make my corsa VXR my own so thought I'd buy the team HEKO wind deflectors...

I got them fitted and went for a bit of a drive up over Pendle hill and got a few pics...

The below picture influenced my Mtecs but more about those later.

So, time for the drive home in the Great British weather...

I found a huge puddle and asked my fiancé to get out and risk getting a little bit wet and take a photo for me... Here it is... Thanks Michelle...

    Now onto the Mtecs...

After seeing the photo from earlier I decided to get rid of the ugly yellow light and opted for the MTec cosmos blues... Dropping the bumper to change bulbs... WTF... Well worth it though...

Since that pic I have now got the full light set including fogs, dipped, high beam and side lights but a don't have a pic. (sorry)

Oh, by the way, I did say that the car would be kept totally standard when I bought it... Lol.

The power bug then reared it's head and I ordered a K and N panel filter... A good little mod, other than the more audible turbo noises I don't think there was much difference in performance.

Away from the mods for a minute...

I was so happy with my car I decided to get my pencils out one day and draw my baby...

Right, enough of that... Back to the mods...

Some insignia washer jets ordered... Cheap little mod and easily fitted but great little mod In The end... (do I really need pics of the washer jets).

My next mod was a bit of a bargain which I am proud of...

My Mongoose full exhaust system including sports cat...

It was a bargain because I noticed on a performance part website that the exhaust said "coming soon"... Knowing how good mongoose were from being a Ford man for a couple of years I waited patiently but the site stayed the same...

I emailed mongoose asking if they needed a development car to which they replied...

"that would be a great help as we have the exhaust made but just need to sort out the fitting kit"...
I asked if I would get a discount and they said... "yes. We will do it for around 40% off RRP" £450.

A few days later I was spending a very boring day in a very small village called Congleton waiting for the exhaust to be developed and fitted... There was nothing to do at all...

I was so bored I asked a taxi driver how much it would cost to the nearest cinema... He said there isn't one anywhere close but it would be about £30.

I settled to walking round a park and falling to sleep in the same park to pass the time.. Lol.

The drive home was awesome... Car felt more responsive and instantly more powerful... The tone from the exhaust is perfect... Quiet when on the motorway cruising but awesome when you put your foot down...

The vids will do the talking...

Believe it or not, I still have not heard my exhaust from the outside yet... People have told me it is awesome though... I still believe it is the ONLY corsa vxr in the world with a full mongoose exhaust system... As soon as someone tells me different I will change this bit and say my car was the first corsa vxr with the system.
Ok, I have been told someone else has got the mongoose system... GUTTED

At this point I entered my car for the total vauxhall hall of fame.
It was put in the September 2011 issue.

After the exhaust there was a few months without any mods but then a new job with a lot better pay came along which I was succesful in getting so it was time for the bigger bits.:D

I very rarely looked at the group buy part of this site but by chance just randomly had a look and noticed the TX autosport front mount intercooler group buy for £300.

I soon got my name down and saved the funds...

A few days later a huge box arrived at the door and I was like a kid at Christmas... I ripped open the box and looked at every polished stainless pipe and every silicone hose and couldn't wait to get it fitted...

Now I am really poo when it comes to cars so got a garage to fit the cooler...

    Again, no pics (sorry again)...

The car felt more responsive again and a definate difference with torque... It just seemed to pull better... All the little turbo noises seemed to get a bit louder as well... The sound of the turbo spooling and the recirc valve and the odd slight bit of chatter... LOVE THOSE NOISES.

So I was all set up for big power... I started looking around and researching different maps and tuning companies...

Seen as I live pretty much nowhere near any of the main tuners, I decided to opt for the EDS IPF tool from regal...

I started saving the cash again and worrying about regal being out of stock but luckily the final payday came so I could afford it, regal had them instock.

After talking to Wayne/vxr... I was all excited and couldn't wait to get the car mapped.

    Great service from regal...

I ordered the IPF at 3 o clock on friday and was sent an email saying they have missed the post for today so it will be sent out on Monday and with me on tuesday...

To my suprise, there was a knock at the door on Saturday morning at 9am and it was a delivery man...

Again, like a kid at Christmas... The package was savagely ripped open and this turned up...

I was a little dissapointed that there was no regal sticker but hey... Can't have everything can I.

Like I said earlier I am poo with cars so I asked my mate to help me remap the car... Cheers Row.

So that morning after a McDonald's breakfast we set to it, I didnt have my boost gauge sorted yet so Rowan lent me his and plumbed it in and zip tied it to my windscreen wiper.

Then onto the actual mapping... It was a quick 10minutes to flash the ECU and then of for a test to see if it was boosting correctly...

Off we popped, letting the car warm up thoroughly first then Onto the motorway... It was boosting perfectly...

Now this is no word of a lie... This is the best modification for the corsa money can buy... The difference in power was amazing... Throttle response greatly improved and on overboost. Just WOW... Feels like someone is actually pushing you down the road.

Instant power increase, better fuel economy and I can change the map whenever I want and if my modifications change...

What a piece of kit... I would reccomend this to anybody.

Reading more into the mapping, I heard that the standard induction pipe could actually be squashed due to the higher boost levels so I bought a forge silicone pipe and got that fitted. (sorry, no pic) dohhhh!!!!

Onto the lastest mod so far, An essential bit of kit for a remapped car and to be fair it looks awesome.

It is an electrical warn series boost gauge from Rspec.

The boost gauge is perfectly in the centre of the vent, it's just the angle of the photo that makes it look a bit off.

I have had a few PM's about my heater vent boost gauge conversion. It was done by VXRCORSA888 off this site, so send him a PM if you are interested.

    Another quick update...

I have bit the bullet and Ordered a couple more mods. It's funny, writing a progress thread has made me want to mod more and more because I feel like I am letting you lot down if I don't... Lol.

    Right, update time,

I received my K and N 57i induction kit this morning. As soon as I opened the box I had to fit it, didn't take long, an hour or so.

Here it is, sorry about the dirty engine bay, I wanted some dinner so didnt clean it before the photo...

I've got to say, I think the car is pulling slightly better but then again that might just be in my head...

The noise it makes is unbelievable, why anyone would buy I dump valve knowing the problems they cause is beyond me. This thing sounds just like one. I love it...

Another small mod but I'm not 100% set on it,
    before

    After
Thought I'd keep with the VXR's triangle theme so added the richbrook sabre aerial. Like I said, I'm not set on it yet but it's better than standard so its staying for now.

I have found out I don't like it because it's silver but i like the shape so I have now ordered a black one, hopefully that will look better.

    The new black stubby one,
bit icy this morning but looks better already.

So, I took delivery of a couple of boxes today, this was what was in them...

Thanks to t13nos for the springs and the splitter is from autovaux, I enquired a couple of weeks ago and they emailed saying they haven't had any from vauxhall for a few weeks. I got an email a couple of days ago saying they received delivery of 1 burg splitter so I snapped it up... Lol

So, it's update time again... Had my springs fitted yesterday, eicach pro's. The car feels smoother somehow and there is no roll when throwing it into a corner and very little lift or dip under hard acceleration and braking.
Not to mention it looks a lot better. After driving with the springs for a few days, all i can say is, i love em...
The car feels a lot more planted i the corners and also a bonus, i can still get over all the speedbumps around me without scraping anything, I do go very slowly over them though... Lol.

    Here are the pics.

    Front

    Back

    Overall stance

Thanks again to t13nos for selling me the springs at a great price.

    Onto this mornings modification.
Been slaving away this morning, my burg splitter. Now you all know I'm rubbish with cars so I used the guides on here, very helpful.
Removing the bumper was the hardest thing. I used the regal guide for fitting the cooler. It said there are 5 torx key bolts holding the bumper on from underneath. I could only find 3.

I didn't realise there were two hidden away in the holes in the bumper. Lol
So it took me half an hour to get to this.

I love my car but it upsets me when I see it undressing. Gets me worried when I see the insides of a car. Lol. Pic also shows the TX autosport cooler fitted.

After the fiasco with the bumper I took it into my living room to attach the splitter. (don't tell the mrs haha)
It was very easy to fit and just seemed to slot into place.

    Here are some pics...

Overall, I love the way the car looks, the splitter sets it off a treat. Now that splitter prices have gone up to £170 I just hope I don't rip it off on the speed bumps around here.

That's it for now, enjoy. I certainly am.

    Another update already... Lol

My car passed its first MOT last week with only an advisory about my number plate delaminating...
So I used my usual philosophy "if it needs replacing, UPGRADE"

So bought these legal carbon fibre effect plates.

Fitted pic, fitted to my filthy car.

I got the place to send me written proof stating that these are fully road legal, post code and BS codes are all present.
Love them and love my car.

Bought an RCC performance upgrades carbon covered spark plug cover.

After having my car on the dyno at a rolling road day, I found out it wasn't fueling right. She was running lean. I booked the car into MPG for a full health check and dyno run to check if it was actually running lean.

Turns out the car was running lean but not as dangerously as originally thought.

While I was at MPG I thought I might as well get the uprated fuel pressure regulator and pump fitted. Ian at mpg also said my car was boosting slightly low so he sorted that out as well. This cost me £474 but at least i have peace of mind now.
Below are before and after dyno runs.

    Before

    After

Now that my car is sorted and I am loving her again I've started buying more bits.

I've just ordered an RCC performance boot brace so will update when I have recieved and fitted it.

I have now fitted the RCC boot brace which Rich delivered in great time, cheers Rich.

I'll let you all know what I think when I get the Mrs out of the car and go for a spirited drive.

I don't quite know what to do with the pump yet but at some point I might have a go at drilling the plastic panels so they fit with the brace fitted.
The car definitely is improved in the corners, feels sturdier and the back end doesn't skip on hard cornering.

Next mod is WHEELS... They are being refurbed and something a bit special/unique ??????????? is happening with them, might not be to everyone's taste but we'll see how they turn out.

I know I've said wheels next but I have just bought a forge Sub frame brace bar and also a cool running stat. I'll let you know how they feel when I get them on the car.

I have just fitted the forge sub frame brace bar, it was a nice simple job. The kind of mods I like... Lol
The car definitely feels more planted through the corners and for price I got it for, all I can say is it's a bargain of a mod.

Got the wheels back today, kerbs are now my worst enemy.

So your thinking, yeh, they're just black... Well that's what I wanted you to think.

    Close up shots.

So now your saying, it's just carbon dipped... Well yes, it is but when it's sunny there should be a little extra. You can't really see it in the pics below but the wheels are base coated in Honda nighthawk black paint which has a very subtle blue and purple metal flake. It's so subtle that you can only see them in the sun really close up.

If you look closely on the below pic you can just see the blue flake, when sunny they should show up more.

Had a wheel off the car today and managed to get a photo with the true detail... The camera flash really brings out the flake... It's like magic.

Great dedication by Wicked coatings and a good price. Wicked coatings kept me informed throughout the process and let me know that the heating element in the dipping tank had died.
They overnighted the new part so they could get my wheels done and also worked late on a bank holiday weekend to get them finished, I got an email saying they were finished at 21:50 on Saturday night.

I will be getting more stuff dipped by them in the future, I could not recommend them highly enough. Great company and prices are also very good.

The courier chipped one of my wheels and wicked coatings have recoated it for free... Got it back today so took the opportunity to snap another quick pic.

My car has now been chosen to go on the power and style awards at PVS 2012. We shall see how well she does...

    Started the prep for PVS

So I woke up at 7ish this morning and noticed the weather wasn't bad... So with all disregard for the neighbours I got the power wasH out and started my PVS prep...

    Enjoy....

Got out of work and it's been raining... Can only mean one thing...

    BEADING...

    very small update...

New vxrgroup stickers and centre cap stickers (thanks Eamon)

a couple more pics of my car, enjoy

    First detail of 2012

Had the car on the dyno at the vxrgroup RR day... Here are the results...

I would just also like to say that owning my car since January 2011 I have only ever had 1 problem with the car...

The common fault... Air con pipes snapped which have been replaced under warrenty even though I was modded...

So to anyone reading this thinking about buying a corsa vxr but is worried about reliability... Please, please don't be worried...

Yes every car is different and some cars are more reliable than others but you get that with any car manufacturer...

The corsa has more character than any other car I have owned(audi may take the top spot though) and will give you all the right feelings in all the right places... Smiles from ear to ear...

Hi James, yes it's true... The fourth piston has failed on some standard cars, never mind stage 1... It is not as common as is made out though...

It seems to happen a lot more than it should but its not every other car.

my car was at stage 3 for 15months and never skipped a beat. Mechanical sympathy is what was needed with the corsa. The fourth piston is caused by thermal shock. So basically if the car was ragged straight from start up, good chances are it would suffer P4.
Show mechanical sympathy by warming up and cooling down and also regular oil changes and most cars are fine.

I also came from Vxro, had this before my Audi,

You'll soon get the modifying bug then if your Corsa was upgraded. The Mrs used to have the a Corsa VXR too and I loved the Recaro seats in that car.

Any pictures of your new car then?

welcome pal, the corsa looked good - how quick did it feel compared to the S3? at the level you were at i'd guess the corsa was quicker than a standard s3..? but then when you mod the s3... :D

The corsa felt quick but span all of its power away... On paper the corsa was probably quicker than a standard S3 but in reality I very much doubt it.
the S3 is a different animal, very fast but very smooth... The corsa was savage with a lot of overboost which give you a feeling of being thrown back into the seats.

My S3 has recaros which I prefer to the corsa ones so I won't miss them. The S3 is a much nicer car, never place to be in the interior and I can't wait to get it.

Tay, this is the only pic I have got, the advert has been removed now as well.

    Cheers,

havent picked the S3 up today gutted but happy at the same time.

the sales man rang to tell me that the guy valeting the car ready for collection found a scratch under the side skirt.

He said it wasn't visible at eye level but as he was cleaning it he noticed. Audi were good enough to let me know and said they will get it straight into the body shop and sort it out.

at least I know the new car will be pristine and all I can say is, great service from audi. Most dealers would have left it and hoped I didn't notice.

now picking the new car up on Thursday morning due to New Years holidays... :-(

oh well, a bit more time to have fun with the VXR. Can't wait for the new beast.

The astra was running about 220+ bhp but stupid amounts of torque! i do miss it tho and the way it drove and how you could feel the road but the s3 is in another league! ive had 170 out of mine and it honestly felt like i was going 70! trust me its worth the wait! but be prepared for the fuel economy! the first weekend i had it i went through £200 in petrol! but i enjoyed every penny of it!

Fuel doesn't bother me at all as long as I can get to work and back for the week on a tank...

Long term I average 28mpg in the corsa with a mixture of driving style and roads. I'm expecting less from the S3 to be fair and I never go off the book figures... Lol
