After 4.5 years of owning a MK4 Golf GT TDI 130 it was time for a change. The turbo went on the car and after having it replaced it never felt the same again :crying:

It went from this

rhyso - dirty diesel power!

So the hunt began for a Sportback TDI 170 S Line.......

After a few weeks of searching I found one for sale on the Derby Audi website. Rang them up and placed a holding deposit as I had been too slow on previous occasions and missed out.

What followed was almost a complete disaster as I was given the story that the car was coming from a BMW dealer in Leamington Spa, it was apparently delayed as the chap who owned the car turned up to collect his new BMW and found the engine management light firmly stuck on. The story was that the BMW dealer couldn't fix it and obviously the customer had driven away in the Audi.

After about a week of this, I was chatting to my mate who was questioning why I wanted to buy from an Audi dealer (mainly free servicing and a couple of other perks at the time) but I was so cheesed off that I said 'not any more' He sends me a link to a potential car. I open the link and my jaw hits the floor as the link he has sent me is for the car that was allegedly sat in a BMW dealership, except it was sat in the forecourt of a garage in Birmingham!

To cut the story short, I had been told a pack of lies by Derby Audi, went to view the car where it was, stuck a deposit down and drove away the next day with the upside that I had it for £1000 less than what Derby Audi had it up for sale!

So the car itself:
S Line TDI 170 Sportback on a 57 plate
Lava Grey
24.5 miles on the clock
Full leather
Factory bluetooth
MFSW
Rear parking sensors

And some yellow laminx on the front fogs

Unseen mods included uprated headlight and fog light bulbs, and Dension Gateway 300 for my music.

Sat on under my desk today is the overhead light console with ambient lighting and map lights which I'll fit tonight

Think that's about it. I'll try and keep this updated as I go along

Hope you enjoy reading :salute:

Nice low miles on that! The AUDI dealer probably didn't want to admit they lost the car, they probably had it down for coming in and maybe some other trader bought it from auction or the BMW dealer sold it to them instead!? Either way the AUDI dealer should have just said that it's not available.

One thing I want to do with mine is straighten the tailpipes, on the 170 they still point down a bit a look slightly "droopy". They appear to be just tack-welded on so should be able to grind that off and reset the pipes straighter.

Cheers! :) Managed to put a couple of thousand on it since then. Fuel economy is not on a par with the old Golf mind but its within what I consider reasonable. Just. Lol

What basically happened is the Audi dealer couldn't be bothered to collect the car so the chap who owns the garage I bought the car from happened to be talking to the Sales Director at the BMW dealers and was offered the car! Why the Audi dealer couldn't tell me that I don't know........

With regards MPG, check my other thread about the 170. I did a run in mine and it showed 49.5mpg average on a 189mile drive, but manually calcing it by brimming it first then re-brimming it afterwards, it actually used just 15litres = 57mpg.

Yeah I read that but sadly my computer is optimistic...... :( Last tank worked out at 42mpg but I mainly do short journeys with a few longer ones in between. Also the colder weather really hammers the economy, especially when its -5 and below! Did a 350 mile round trip on Friday with the car fairly loaded and it showed around 44mpg. That was sat at approx 80mph so I don't consider that too shabby.

Compared to the Golf I'm about 50 miles per tank down but then I am having a lot more fun in it! :)

Sounds about right to me! 44mpg average at 80 sounds fine. Full tank average at 42mpg sounds ok too, I was getting high 30s on some trips, including motorway (not more than 70) - I've adjusted the computer in VAGCOM now and will see if it matches more closely manual figures checking it every now and then - unfortunately you can only do it properly with a full tank over a longer distance. Although I did adjust it too much and got a record 67mpg average lol.

Glad the figures appear to be ok then! I was a little bit worried. Got a new fuel filter to put in as looking through its (tiny) service history its only ever had one oil change :tapedshut: Stupid longlife servicing. I'll be changing the oil out in January and putting it back to time & distance :icon_thumright:

that IS a posh golf... so posh some cheeky git has stuck four rings on it.

nice car mate, enjoy! i regret not going for a 2.0TDI 170 instead of my 2.0T - but if you tell anyone i said that i'll lie like a dog :tapedshut:

Rhyso

Nice wheels! You wont regret it!

I have two questions, firstly what's with the fog lights, whats laminx?

Secondly whats with the German style plates? I often see them on golfs and A3's but I'm not sure what its for? Is it purely cosmetic and are there any legal issues with them?

When i first started spotting them, I assumed that the car had been imported, and UK plate didn't fit the holder, then I realised they were right hand drive?

Lol :) Definitely enjoying it at the moment; awesome bit of kit :thrashi:

Laminx is a tinted film basically which you stick over the lights. I bought it from Ebay. Strangely though the link to what I bought has been removed

The plates are from Dubmeister UK Legal Pressed Metal Number Plates and are 100% road legal. There was a group buy on here recently so if you want a set you may be able to jump in on it :icon_thumright: I fit them because they look so much better than the rubbish plastic ones and they won't de-laminate like you see a lot of number plates do

Nice car mate and welcome to the site, so whats your futre plans for it? Hoping to get myself the 170 in April, can't wait!

Quick question to throw out there rather than starting a new thread, other than the chrome exhaust and power what else is the difference between the 140 and 170?

Future plans.......early next year will be wheel spacers and a wheel refurb, possibly in a slightly darker colour than they are now. Past that I haven't given it much thought. I spent waaaayyyy too much money on the Golf so the idea behind buying the S Line was most of the stuff I'd do was already done :)

I honestly don't know. I think the trim levels are nigh on the same. As you say, its literally the exhaust and the actual power output that's different. Obviously the power output is down to larger turbo and a few other components (stand to be corrected on that as I'm not 100% sure)

Also the 170's, certainly the later ones all come equipped with the DPF which can cause problems and make it a bit harder to extract more power out of them.

The early 140's didn't come with the DPF so remap very well. I went for the 170 mainly to stop me tinkering with it :ninja: Time will tell on that last statement mind lol

I think as said the only visual difference is the straight/chrome tail pipes on the 170 (all PD170s have the DPF, the later 08-on 170s are the new CR170 engine though, still with DPF but apparently a better DPF design). The trim and spec levels are the same as the 140.

Turbo internal layout is slightly different on 170

Nice car btw :)

Lovely car mate

Thanks :)

Nice car btw :)

Thank you too lol

Fitted the new interior light on Monday. Removing the light itself was easy, but I didn't quite realise how much you had to swap from one unit to the next and removing the microphone was a PITA.

Think that's all for this year...........

Quattro FTW....

Looks like you have a lot there mate. I assume they are some kind of snow chain on the front wheels??

Had about 15 inches in less than 24 hours! Never seen so much snow!

Textile fabric rather than outright chain
AutoSock/Auto Sock. The Textile wheel cover for Driving in Ice and Snow.Auto Socks get you Home!

Work surprisingly well. Managed to get out of where I live on fresh snow with no fuss or drama. Never had any wheelspin or the ESP cutting in :)

Bought a couple of bits and bobs recently.

Boot liner and rubber mats for the front
A set of these:
Original AUDI Rädertasche Reifentasche on eBay (end time 10-Jan-11 09:44:20 GMT)

I did buy a set of RS4 reps but they'll be going back. Quality is ok but I'm a bit of an OEM freak so for the time being I'll get get my original alloys refurbed and perhaps look / save for something a bit more special in the future

Yeah shame its not mine though :( I'm stuck with on street parking :( No plans to lower it. I lowered my last car and to be honest, it sucked lol Guess I'm getting old

The bags are epic! But you've bought them to my attention so all I can say is thankyou lad.

Not a problem

Haha yeah. The Golf was an excellent car but the A3 is definitely a few classes above

Not done anything lately really apart from buying one of these
AUDI Rear Back Car Seat Cover A3 A4 A6 S6 Q5 Q7 S-LINE on eBay (end time 18-Feb-11 11:08:48 GMT)

Bought it to save the rears from my dog's sharp claws! Fit is OK at best but its cheaper than a retrim of the seats!

On a slightly more exciting note I dropped my wheels off at the weekend to be refurbished. I won't see them for 3 weeks sadly as I'm off on my travels this week :)

Gone for a gunmetal grey finish:

Also ordered some 10mm spacers for the rear

Look forward to seeing the alloys and spacers on fella. What spacers you go for and where you get them?
Enjoying your traveling :)

I use the wheel specialist in Nottingham and have nothing but praise for them

They did my RC's last year on my old Golf :) My mate had his done too and they've lasted through the harsh winter we've had. Here's my old RC's

Looks really good fella :) Goes very well with the colour of the car.
You pleased with the results?

Cheers Ash

Yeah really pleased with the results. I was a little worried the colour would be too dark but its spot on  Shame the rest of the car is filthy haha

Any one in South Wales looking for a wheel refurb company I can recommend the Wheel Specialist in Cwmbran. They've done two sets of wheels for me now and both have been mint :) They even helped me fit the wheels today

Mine was last washed about 3 weeks ago but I've been on holiday for 2 of them so have an excuse!!

No immediate plans. I 'may' get the aluminium pedal set but its a bit pricey

I am tempted by an RS6 steering wheel but they are mega money :crying: Then there's sat nav and of course the lurking desire to make it go a little quicker :ninja:

Haha exactly the same as mine mate! I had mine done there too... Although I need to find a new wheel as 1 of mine is now square after a fight with a pothole.

Looking good!

looks much better mate!! i like it a lot (jim carey in D&D)!!
