My only reason is that I live down town in a city and would like also in the future being able to to sneak in to narrow spaces for street parking. As we all know, the new saloon is considerable longer than the sportback.
A3 buyers: what is your reason not to buy the saloon?

My only reason is the ease of access to the boot for children's bits and golf clubs - other than that would have 100% gone for the saloon and still regret not ordering one.

As saloon versions of hatchbacks go, the A3 is a very good looking attempt, but for me, (and this is going to put some backs up...), saloons have 'rep mobile' connotations... (Think Orion, Sierra Sapphire, Astra, Cavalier, Mondeo, Sigma... That apart, ultimately it's not as practical for me. I need a hatch, and the A3 (Sportback) stands out as being that little bit different from other hatches with its extra rear side window...

I much prefer the practicality of a hatchback and I still think the hatchback looks as good if not better than the Saloon. Some people prefer Saloons, some hatchbacks. At least Audi now give the customer the choice.
The other reason in my case is than the Saloon is not yet available with the 2.0TDI-184 engine in s-tronic quattro. May be in the 2015 Model Year.

Best looking car of the whole A3 range, and the many reviews agree with that. It is unique because it shares no body parts with any other model, it is longer, wider and has a bigger boot with the seats up.
I really do not think anyone can compare it to a rep-mobile of the past, they probably can't think that far back anyway and it is nothing like a hatchback with a boot.
However I think that this topic has been covered in so many threads before....

I don't like the saloon looks, I want a bigger boot, I don't like bigger cars, I don't want no rear wiper!
That actually a very good comparison, the Saloon is the Orion the the Sportback being the Escort. Orion was never as highly valued as the Escort was. Even still I'm a fan of the A4, but find the A3 Saloon just doesn't look right. But each to their own.
I think I might start one about why us saloon owners didn't go for the A3 or the sporthearseback...

I need to be able to fit my car nose to tail with my wife's on the driveway. The sportback just about fits, depending on how close we park. The saloon would be too long. Oh, and the saloon wasn't released yet when I was buying.
I had a look at a saloon in the showroom last week. IMO It didn't look as good in the metal as the press shots (solid paint wasn't helping it). Also, whilst the boot is a fair size, it's not very accessible.

However, very dull, uninformed and uninspired review. Hammond was in the need of some quick cash? Don't blame the saloon, could have been any A3.
In stile it reminds me of these crappy and dull reviews you find everywhere on the internet on the new A3, its like they have been, more or less, cloned (which they likely are, partly written by the PR division of Audi).
He's right about the price though; for the £29k it would take to spec one up you could instead purchase an A4 Black Edition.
I have seen it in flesh, looks fine to me. Not spectacular, but Audi's seldom are.

When my car was in for body repair I had a suped up VW Eos as a courtesy which was a lovely car but I didn't like having an **** on it that stuck out further than the rearscreen.
The A1 is too small for me though. I think my A3 hatchback looks pretty mean, I didn't like the looks of the sportback though.

Have the same view myself. I happen to think the sportier (S, S line) saloons look great, but still have that view of them for me personally.
Plus I'm a big estate fan (visual and utility), and I see the sportback as a small estate rather than a hatch.

I was going to buy the S3 saloon then someone offered me a drive in an S5 with a dealer & manufacturer contribution I couldn't overlook. Hence I didn't buy one because I didn't like it, it just made more sense on the day to buy the S5 given the dealer wouldn't shift on price of S3 saloon. Got a supercharger, 2 extra cylinders, coupe looks and 'proper' Quattro (with sports diff) for £3k more money. Couldn't turn it down.

I bought the A3 Saloon as I wanted a smallish car, but not a hatchback. The A4 Saloon is too big and long in the tooth. The A3 Saloon is pretty much the same size as the original A4, which I had, and which has grown significantly over the years. I suppose it's equivelent would be the BMW 3 Series Saloon, and Merc C-class. Personally, I think it's an attractive car, with modern design and technology. My only concern is the higher than expected road noise on some surfaces but that seems to apply to all A3 models.
