Hi there, I've just ordered an A3 sport back 1.4CoD but the dealer never had one to test drive. I was just wondering what it's performance is like (I usually go down the diesel route and currently have a Q3 140 TDI). Apologies if this has been debated about in previous threads as I've just joined!

I think you will find the 1.4COD will be a lot quicker and more fun than the 140bhp Q3.
IMHO the entry level Q3 you have been driving is underpowered for the weight of the car ( and is not Quatro) and on paper 0-60 is 9.9sec compared to 8.4sec or thereabouts

I do find it hard to justify to be spending all that money on a car when you've not tested it!
I know there are ins and outs which you can get information for but if your local dealership didn't have one, they must have fleet cars or could you go to other nearby dealerships to test?

Hi, I didn't get to try the 1.4 COD engine either, only a 2.0l diesel version of the saloon. However from the tests I'd read, and owners comments and that the figures from the engine I was sure I was getting something at least compatible to the 1.6 Ecoboost 150ps the car was replacing. I was wrong, in fact the engine is better.

Only did 1 test drive in the 1.4 CoD. What impressed me most was how smooth it was. The engine stop/start function was really hard to notice.
Others have commented on the sharper handling that the lighter petrol engine gives.

I did the same, only tried the 1.4 in a golf prior to ordering mine. I love it though. Very smooth and has a nice amount of poke to it. You'll not be disappointed.

I have a fully loaded 1.4cod s-tronic saloon loan car for a week,thanks to sales manager,incredible drive train COD engine refinement that allows it to run on half an engine without you eever knowing the difference.
My 1.4 COD SB is being built this week and i didnt test drive that particular engine. However, i did drive the 1.4 122bhp version and found that good, so was confident i wouldnt be disappointed with the extra 18 bhp, mpg and lower tax.
of course the car i am leaving behind wasnt especially quick so it was always going to be significant upgrade

I found the Audi A3 Saloon comfortable and pleasant to drive. It does its job exceptionally well and without fanfare. It's impressively economical yet, when push comes to shove, there is enough pace on tap to satisfy the hooligan in you.
As coming from a A1 I.6 diesel the A3 cod petrol tick's over, is a much lighter unit, which brings tangible benefits to ride and handling.
The S-tronic gearbox, meanwhile, works well with this engine, shifting quickly and smoothly, with seventh tall enough for a 2,000rpm motorway cruise.
This gives it Tthe appearance of a miniature a4 (it is about 15-24cm shorter), which is no bad thing as that car is a handsome beast
Try and get a test drive in your ideal spec before committing to a deposit.
I also never had the chance to drive a 1.4 before ordering mine so was a little nervous. I need not have worried - it's a lovely engine. Very quick, strong and smooth. I've not been booting it but I frequently find myself having to slow myself down as it has a habit of creeping over the speed limit! The car feels like it's going much slower than it actually is.
One thing about the engine though is I have no idea how they ever got 60+ MPG from it. Appreciate I'm only running it in but I reckon low-mid 40's on the motorway seems more realistic.

Many threads on real vs official mpg and how official mpg is calculated, but your mid-40's sounds about right.

I ordered mine w/o test driving it as they hadn't actually hit the streets at the time..best I could do was test drive the 1.4 (122) and decided that that particular engine was good enough to buy so the COD would be even better....and it was/is!!!
I came from a 2.0tdi rocco..and accepted it would be a compromise...but it isn't and I prefer the 1.4 petrol to the diesel....though there are a few more trips to the fuel station...which seems have fallen into a pattern of filling up late on a Sunday night to avoid crowds.
It's a cracking engine...smooth, quite, brisk and torquey (not to be confused with the Devonshire town)

What would you say your avg mpg is? If I drive normally on a mix of motorway and local roads I'd be lucky to get 35mpg. Driving efficiently I get around 39/40.

I know official figures are impossible to achieve, but that's a long way off the combined figure of 60mpg.

Only had mine a few weeks and mostly drive select has been in Dynamic and was around 35mpg. Switched to auto for the past week and it is now creeping up to 40mpg. I do make a lot of short journeys though so auto start stop and CoD doesn't get much of a chance to kick in with the cold weather.
I test drove the 1.4COD saloon and then ordered a car of that spec, should have it 1st March. After placing my order I did wonder whether I'd made the right choice and wondered if the car would have enough power. Toyed with changing it to the 2.0 diesel or 1.8 petrol but eventually stuck with the 1.4. What I did though is compare its performance to cars I've owned in the past which had performance I was happy with. It has similar performance, i.e. Acceleration to 60, top speed and torque, to a Ford Escort RS Turbo, BMW 320i and better than my lancia montecarlo, lancia beta 2.0i, Ford XR3i. I have owned faster cars but a comparison with those, eg Porsche Boxster, was pointless. So I expect my A3 to have adequate performance with good economy, we'll see!

Never moved from 37mpg...never really driven in anything other than 'Dynamic'...tried the other modes once..never again lol
I leave my 1.4 122 in Auto mode and over 10k miles i'm averaging 43mpg. I think the COD gets you better performance, but i'm not so sure it's particularly more economical.
I'm getting 35mpg on short runs around town currently, but it is rising. I reckon on a long run I could get around 50mpg or even higher..
Just took delivery of mine on Friday from Tonbridge Audi. Also bought on a blinder, i.e. no test drive (Audi UK couldn't source a car in over 5 months!).
Pretty happy, traded in from 1.6 diesel, which managed only 48mpg average if driven at it's limits. 1st impressions of this one are that economy is well down, 38mpg on 31 mile journey to work this morning (in peak traffic) but much more respectable 48.6 on way home in Efficiency mode.
I love the way it almost seems to coast forever. Less than 200 miles on the clock so with time hope to get to over 50mpg as long as I keep my feet light and off the pedals.
Can't see anything on the DiS that says when it's running on 2 cylinders. Read a review that says there's no such indicator - BGS where did you sport this?
Now trying to get my iPhone 5s connected to MMI - that's on another thread I think!

On the DIS if you put it to show you your average or immediate miles per gallon it will tell you when you are in 2-cylinder mode.

That'll be if those are displayed in the large characters. If you set it to show the actual mph and the average mpg it will not display the 2 cyl mode...

Indeed. Needs to be in onboard computer display mode rather than digital speedo.
2000 miles in mine so far and averaging 37mpg in auto mode (manual car)
Not so keen on dynamic mode in the wet as it seems to spin quiet easily.
I've just done 1000mile and the best journey was Portsmouth to Verwood return at 60 mph and set ACC and no jams was 54.9mpg. My 3 year old fiesta at 50mph couldn't get anywhere near that.
I average 50 - 55MPG driving country roads, 70 - 80mph on M1 and then into Sheffield every day. About 25 miles each way. This is in a 9 year old Peugeot 107... engine technology needs to improve a bit, I'd hope to get that in a new car with plenty more ooomph, doing 80mph with a 68bhp 1 litre engine is hard work, hills are a no-go haha

My commute is 18 miles e/w and about 75% of that is motorway. My average since new is now just touching 40MPG but I'm regularly seeing it hitting 41-46 mpg on journeys now.
Has anyone noticed a little hesitancy in the engine in 1st gear from stand-still? It only seems to happen when the engine is cold but I've noticed a few times it drops a little power then picks up again.

Yup, definitely noticed this. Makes jumping on to roundabouts a bit tricky. This is on the Stronic though, not sure what box you have.
What fuel are you guys using 95 or 98ron as car is due end of March and currently driving a A3 2.0tdi 170 s-tronic and only use premium diesel so wondered if I would need to stick with the premium fuel

Was using BP Ulitimate until reading the forums. Have recently made the switch to Tesco Momentum (99). Although this is in no way a scientific test I am getting slightly better mileage. But this could be down to any number of factors this early on in ownership.

I've just been using 95 ron with v-power every 4/5 tanks. Always used 98/99 in my more powerful cars though.
Interesting. The first few times it happened I thought I hadn't given it enough gas as it felt like it was about to stall. The next few times I seemed to compensate and over-revved it away in 1st. It's started to smooth out a little but it still happens every day at some point.
I wonder if it's a 'fault' or 'feature'.
