My thoughts: A3 1.4 COD s-line versus Golf 2.0 GTi

    Hi All,

I'm new to this forum although have been reading posts since ordering my Daytona 3dr s line 1.4 cod. I switched from a mk5 GTi DSG to the A3 and am loving the new car. Had it two months now.

    Went with:
    S Line Daytona Grey
    Comfort Pack
    B&O
    Privacy glass
    Interior light package

My general view is the car is excellent but S line is a must (for me at least) and Daytona looks great particularly in 3 dr guise with privacy glass finishing it off great. B&O is awesome and worth the money for me even though a leased company car so I'll never get any benefit back. Ordering again I would like a lot of the tech I didn't opt for but there comes a point where you have to draw the line.

Engine is great balance between performance and economy (well more balanced towards economy) but faster than I expected and although I occasionally miss the smooth consistent power delivery of the gti dsg, the economy benefits outweigh the cost here. Not a diesel fan so this was a great option. Definitely wouldn't opt for s tronic on anything less than the 1.8t though, the manual is smooth and quick changing.

Interior is spot on and I prefer it to friends a5 black edition. Way ahead of the golf, BMW and a class.

Also I ordered in April and delivered end November so probably the longest wait I've seen, but worth it!

Less engaging than my GTi to drive but class above in all other respects. I do find a lack of traction on the front wheels at times which I guess is a result of less weight on front wheels!

Thanks Stiga, i've got the 1.4COD (Sportback Sport) on order so looking forward to getting my hands on it in March. Only test drove the 122bhp version which wasnt too shabby itself but when you add in the Road Tax and fuel savings i reckon the COD pays for itself and its swifter. I've had rental Golf's 2.0 TD and found them a great drive so appreciate it may not be quite as quick but will certainly be quicker than my 12 yr old 1.6SXi Astra!

The 1.4 and 1.8 S-tronic both use the same 7-speed, so why is the 1.4 TFSI worse? Especially given that the 1.4 S-tronic is quicker to 60 and has a better CO2/economy figure than its manual counterpart.

My personal view is that auto boxes work well with fast powerful engines particularly when combined with paddle shift. On a 1.4 Cod (which isn't a fast car) I'd rather spend the cash elsewhere on B&O maybe or possibly upgrade to 1.8. Of course it's quicker given dual clutch but take point on economy although I assume the variance is marginal

Fair enough. I have driven both the 1.8 TFSI S tronic and 1.4 TFSI S tronic and could honestly only tell the difference at motorway speeds, where the 1.8 TFSI could definitely accelerate better. I actually found the 1.4 to be more fun around down, being lighter and more torque at lower revs. The economy difference probably isn't noticeable, but the tax band difference is.
