Ahh well thats easy - you have a ready made cup holder. The child in the middle gets the job.

No need to trim the revs for running in. Just don't apply full throttle or run at top speed for extended duration. Owners manual does mot stipulate a rev limit for the first 1000 miles, just recommends the above.
Gentle running in will not assist engine longevity in this modern era of accurate manufacturing techniques.....

Some argue that running it hard (once up to temp) gives a better run in that running gently. Suppose to give a better piston ring seal.

Just let the engine heat up properly and drive it like it should be driven.

    Hi all,

Took delivery of my S3 on Monday and about 100km so far. I come from a BMW Z4 E89 2.5 liters inline6 n/a engine 204 HP. First thing I can say is that the S3 make the Z4 technology looks like a 1960 car rather than 2009 one. btw the E89 remains one of the best looking car on the market IMO. But let's do in the right order

    1) Just out the dealership I had about 2km of highway to my home. Temptation was too strong and yes, I pushed the damn gas pedal without trashing the engine after 4000 rpm. Whew guys I really have to admit that I bought the S3 without a test drive before and I cannot imagine such a kick in the as*. Cannot wait for the end of burning in

    2) Yes, the engine is a bit rougher and lack the same smoothness of the inline6 but it is obvious I think. The noise too is very involving and the parps from the gearbox stamp a smile on my face every time but it lacks that deep, silky and smooth tone from the inline6. Obvious too I suppose

    3) Torque is immediately available. No way, it kicks in at every rev.

    4) The gearbox is simply amazing. Smooth and very fast. Btw the gears looks a bit short to me. My BMW was a 6 gear torque converter with the opposite flavor: too long gears to deliver a right amount of thrust. But I think it is in the characteristics of a torque converter due to the converter slippage. In "comfort" mode the car always moved from standstill in second gear.

As I told before, aside of the comfort of automatic gearbox for people like me living in a great and ugly south-european city, the parps from the exhaust during upgear fully worth the cost of the automatic gearbox option.

    5) Comfort: The car simply looks like tailored around you. Super-sport seats I choose as option are totally comfortable (I am 173 centimeters for 63kg) all the switches and buttons are very cleverly placed and all easily reachable. After 5 minutes I was on the car I felt myself as if I had the car since years.

    6) Plastic and all around you is very high quality and with a great feeling to the touch

    7) LED headlight are simply amazing. Great light hue and light field and do not forget that you also get the adaptive beam! Worth every euro (or pound...). Still not tested the "bad weather lights" despite actually it is bad weather here...

    8) Entertainment: got the B&O sound system. I am a professional classical (organ) and modern (electric bass) musician and audiophile. In my opinion the car is never the right place to listen to music but the B&O sound system does its job and does it very well. There is a strange frequency gap between the subwoofer in the trunk and the woofers in the door to my ear but it is too early to judge: loudspeakers must sound hours and hours before reaching their optimal performances. I listened to x-thousand dollars loudspeakers sounding harsh fresh outta the box. Immediately move the focus of the sound from "center" to "front" from the MMI to enjoy it better. Later I will play with the EQ in order to find a sound better suited to my tastes.

The connectivity package with the phone handsfree is amazing. Also the vocal commands are great and always recognized.

I have SD navigation. It is acceptable to my limited navigation needs but, great God, it is damn slow to load the maps. Every time I press "insert destination" I have to wait minutes before the entry screen appears, sometimes I press the dial twice thinking that the first press was not detected.

I found hilarious, on the instruction manual, the warning that states that: "in case of emergency your voice could be affected by an high degree of emotion and could not be recognized by the system".

I am also still having troubles with the SD media. I ripped a CD with iTunes in "apple loseless format" *m4a and copied to the SD. The MMI does not play this ripped CD. The track names are grey, not white. Maybe some kind of copyright protection crap. (I bought that CD, really!). I copied on the SD some files bought on the iTunes store and they are recognized and played.

Conclusion: before taking delivery of the S3 I was concerned about leaving my Z4. In two days I totally forgot it. A whole new world.
The only thing that makes me a bit upset is that the driver seat, from the first moment I seated on it, has a slight play: when I seat on it the seat move downward of few millimeters with a metallic noise. I suspect it is an anomaly in the mechanism of the height setting. I will come back to the dealer at 700km for a quick check of the car and I will report them of this issue...nothing bothering so far.

    Have fun with your S3!!!

    Dan

One thing i have noticed now that i have started putting my foot down a bit more - the power delivery is very very smooth, coming from a remapped 8P S3 this new car feels less aggressive, but when you look at the speedometer you can't quite believe what speed you are going!

Also, in the S-Tronic, if you put the car in Dynamic mode and use the manual paddles....it turns into a monster, the exhaust blips are stupidly loud it almost sounds like someone trying to start up a chainsaw in the boot, and something else i have noticed - the car seems to go into another lease of life after 4K revs and pulls even harder rather than drop off...
I agree totally with Johnny here... comming from a TTS the S3 feels a lot slower.... but you look down at the speedo and have to back off is every bit as quick and a lot smoother.

Strange, (if i remember correctly) my French owner's manual says you shouldn't run the car beyond 2/3rds of total rpm before hitting the 1500km mark.

    A day short of 4 weeks since I had to have my S3 recovered by Audi Assist, my car is now back with me. In the end, the following parts were replaced;

    High pressure fuel pump
    Turbo
    Catalytic Converter
    Lamda sensor

No route cause has been found but they suspect the turbo failed initially as debris had made its way into the Cat. Im not sure how this would affect the fuel pump?

It may just be me but the engine does feel stronger than before so maybe something wasnt right from day 1? I have had an S5 Cab for the past couple of weeks and the S3 definitely feels like it has the edge (as it should do).

Lets hope thats the end of my troubles....

must admit mine doesn't feel free revs until it hits the sweet spot - not used to turbo cars so it could just be a trait im not used or its not run in so is tight as a v......, lol and will get better and more free revving over time - im used to free revving non turbo cars

What was the outcome of this? Reason I ask is that I'm getting a faint metallic rattle when engaging the throttle. Completely unnoticeable when at higher revs or music on. I have it booked in next Monday to be looked at.

Some annoying problems here at 700 km (!)

    - Play and noise when sitting in the driver seat. Fixed at the dealer. Despite this, my driver seat still have a quite unnoticeable play and it is not firm like the passenger seat

    - Sticky brake pedal on release. Fixed at the dealer (Do not know what they did. Maybe lubricated the pedal hinge)

    - New entry: From yesterday the right mid speaker of the right door of my B&O is crackling. Very disappointing. Will call the dealer today.

But the car is totally amazing!

Well 3 weeks in finally got a proper drive yesterday, through Forest of Bowland lots of narrow steep quick up and down u bends through to North Yorkshire. 'Manual' country I thought but the Stronic coped remarkably well with minimum intervention. Torrential hail storms in places car always felt 100% planted.
Several places the SD sat nav couldn't find but at least knew I was on a road (of sorts). Standard suspension if fine, glad resisted the magnetic from value point of view. Still need to tweak standard seat, steering wheel adjustment some more 95% but not found the perfect position yet.
B&O is excellent particularly using .wav files on SD card c 150 albums on 64gb card is plenty. Having said that often off as the sound of the car is best thing to listen to.
First bit of real motorway driving too, yikes aggressive overtaking from 79 cruise makes three figures flash up very quickly. Need to watch that.
I never used to like traffic lights ;-)
Touch wood, zero problems, car feels rock solid... Estoril and standard wheels do need a regular wash though so that's the next job.

Been getting a metallic ringing/rattle when applying the throttle which shouldn't be there. It's also been juddering when downshifting at low speeds.

My one has only juddered once or twice whilst downshifting whilst approaching a roundabout and I've occasionally heard the metallic noise within the first couple of minutes goes away after that and dont hear it for the rest of the drive though.

Will be interesting to hear what they say about yours.

This thread has been a bit underused...I suppose those with new S3's have been out there enjoying them, but it would be great to get some more feedback, good and bad!!

    Just an update after 800km.

    - Engine is loosening and the sound is becoming more and more engaging. How much torque always available!! I am always surprised on how much acceleration even in 6th gear at 140 km/h.
    - MPG are very good. Coming from a 2.5 N/A BMW inline 6 this S3 thing looked economic also just out the dealer.
    - Had a driver seat play and a sticky brake pedal immediately fixed at the dealer one week after getting delivery
    - B&O is loosening too and sounds much better than brand new. The first time I was not so much impressed by it, now it is starting to sound very good
    - I am surprised on how silent is this car if you do not want a spirited drive but pussyfooting in the commuter traffic. It is the perfect daily car with added spicy flavor.
    - Super sport seats are really comfortable but I did not find yet my driving position. For my poor back I hoped the lumbar support had more excursion.
    - Get used to the SD Navigation and I find it very very clever. No complaints about not having specced the MMI plus. Also the small display has a decent quality thanks to a good anti-aliasing. When I am driving I do not care to look at an high-res display, I am busy looking to the road and old people with hat crawling around.
    - The steering wheel is a masterpiece on how it handles. And the backlit + and - on the paddles are a very refined touch in this "make-it-in-economy" era.
    - Very good quality leather compared to my old BMW
    - The trunk floor is a bit flimsy. I loaded a small foldable Brompton bike and I chipped and scratched the surface. Buy immediately the rubber mat accessory or also a suitcase could damage the furry surface.
    - S-Tronic fastness and related parps are simply touching.

    - The lack of a seventh gear is, in my opinion, the worst flaw of this wonderful car. On motorway and with all that torque I am sure it could add economy and a more relaxed and silent riding. We are in the 8-gears-automatic transmissions era. BMW offered 7 gears dual clutch back in 2010 on the 35i Z4. (ok, it was a longitudinal engine RWD layout)

No complaints so far. I desperately hope I did a good running-in and it will be a trouble-free car (For safety and due to the whole new engine i bought a 2 years warranty-extension. Touch wood)

I got the £170 boot rubber thingy free - it makes a heck of a difference and is very nice - if it was half the price Id say its a must buy but at £170 id say its way too expensive

This is a known issue with 8v 1.8 and S3 engines, I've been experiencing it since taking delivery last year. Audi replaced my turbo last week in an effort to resolve it, but no difference.

There are numerous threads about it, a popular one is on this German forum, google translate should give you the general idea:

    1.8TFSI und 2.0TFSI S3 - Sammelthread: Rasseln im Bereich Beifahrer von der Abgasanlage : Audi A3 8V, 8VA & 8VS

No fix or solution exists, so I suggest let your Dealer/Audi know you're experiencing it too, so it gets some more priority..
