I think this may have something to do with the 184 TDI exhaust system, which is basically the same as the Golf GTD.

The Golf GTD account, optionally with actuator sound that emphasizes the engine sound inside the car according to the speed of the car and driving profile selection adopted. Engine noise is directed to the actuator integrated in the engine compartment and follows through to the inside of the windscreen, and there is combined with the sound coming from the exhaust system.
