Noticed this when I was washing my petrol cap, I take it that it channels through the other side and not into the tank?

My A3 8L has a drain hole just below the fuel cap but still within the plastic/rubber mount. It drains into the wheel arch and not into the tank. If the drain is outside the filler cap then pretty sure it would do the same thing to avoid water & dirt contamination in the tank.
