So, if I use SD cards instead of my iPod - do I still get playlists etc?

If you create playlists on the SD Card, yes.

Use a program like MP3Tag, you can select all the files on your card, then use it create playlists, which you then save to the SD Card. When navigating through the MMI, select playlists and it'll be there.

by folder, by artist, by album, by playlist... I haven't bothered using my ipod in the car for music at all. 16gb SD fulfills all my needs.

Excellent - It's the same in my current car, I've just had a USB stick in there and used that the whole time. I've used the CD player in it once - to check it works!
