    Question re 1.6tdi + 1.4 tfsi

My dealer offers the 1.6tdi 1.000euros more than the 1.4tfsi.

    Petrol costs 1,67 euros/lt and diesel 1,37 eu/lt.

    I drive appr 1.600 - 1.900 km per month.

It is obvious that cost wise the diesel is the way to go, but have been reading that it is underpowered and also that consumption between these two is equally not that different.

With the above mentioned differences in sale price and fuels, is it really so underpowered in general and also compared to the 1.4 that it would justify ordering the petrol and not the diesel especially with my monthly driving?

Some of you own them some have owned the 8p, so your thoughts are more than welcome.

    Thanks

I couldn't comment on whether the 1.6TDI is underpowered - you're best off waiting for one of the forum members with one to answer that. Regards economy, I will say that you'll never get anywhere near the official figures in real world driving. This affects both petrols and diesels though.

If you're buying with your own money then also look into residuals, as diesels usually hold their value better after a few years as those are the most in demand by the market. Basically, don't just look at the purchase price but the total cost of ownership or TCO, i.e. purchase price less what you can reasonably expect to sell it for when the time comes, plus running costs.

I think the new 1.4 Tfsi ACT 140bhp will be much better than both the 1.6 TDI or 1.4 tfsi 122bhp, and will probably cost just a little more. Unfortunately, it won't be available on the A3 to be ordered before the summer.

I have seen several comments about the 1.6 TDI being underpowered, particularly in 6th and 7th gear (very long gears), but I havent' tested one myself, and it also depends on what you are used to drive!
Next: either a MK7 Golf GT DSG or a new Audi A3 S-tronic...

    Question re 1.6tdi + 1.4 tfsi

I've test drive the 2.0 diesel and the 1.4tfsi (122) and currently own a 1.6tdi A1. I've ordered the 1.4 purely based on it being cheaper and the economy is still (hopefully) really good. Plus it was really nice to drive and nice and quiet.

I feel the 1.6tdi in the A1 is a bit underpowered so didn't really consider it for the A3. Plus it's got no where near the claimed mpg in my A1 so can only see the A3 being worse in this respect.

    I owned an S3 8L from 2000 to 2005, a golf gti V from 2005 to 2009 and currently a toyota RAV4 I know I Know, but a need it a reliable light 4wd and lots of cargo room...

As you can see I have compromised a lot in performance and driving style and do miss the smile of a hot hatch, but with me driving around 18.000 - 20.000 km pa fuel consumption and prices become an issue...

If you see my OP you ll see that petrol is much more expensive than diesel, but would not want to get a more underpowered car than the RAV 4 ...

Have you considered the 2.0 diesel. I was very impressed with this when I test drove one. Also owners on here have been getting some good economy figures. Especially compared to others with the 1.6

Hi, yes I have but unfortunately due to financial and tax reasons I can not go for a 2.0 lt engine, neither for a 1.8 (regardless diesel or petrol), that is why I m focusing on the 1.6 + 1.4.

    Thanks
