Convicted driver with no ncb! Needs advice please

    Hi

Its proving to be a very difficult and expensive task getting insured on the S3 now..I have been
getting quotes from all over the web for the last week but all are over 3k!! On the verger of giving up now but thought i'd look for advice on here.

I have a dr30 conviction and havnt accumulated any ncb as i've been a named driver.

Im 31 years old and always had a clean licence until this conviction (first and last..trust me!) I've never been involved in an accident. I admit i have made a mistake and have learnt my lesson big time!

I just need to get insured for one year to get 1 years ncb under my belt and will take out a 3rd party policy only just to keep the price down!

Does anyone have any advice, companies i can approach for the best quote possible in my situation?

    Thanks in advance

I hate to say it but your S3 should be replaced with an easier car to insure.

You're looking at a small city car mate, VW Polo or similar is what I would be looking at. Maybe garage the S3 if you are adament on keeping it, but sell otherwise.

Yes i have cherished the S3 so will think about it..

Just need a years ncb and that should get me somewhere near a reasonable quote.

Just been quoted 1800 3rd party.. maybe a little but of light at the end of the tunnel!

How about buying a cheap runner with a years tax and mot (Polo, Fiesta etc), SORN the S3, run the cheap car for a year, then put the S3 back on the road after that?

have you been doing these quotes on comparison sites? You said you were looking at third party only but I would also check out Third Pary fire and theft cover as its often cheaper (a lot of companies no longer offer TPO cover so you are narrowing the number who will quote you). Also what is the value of your S3? Many companies will have a limit to the value of car they will cover on TP / TPFT policies (usually about 5k) so again, if your car is worth more then i would suggest also checking Comp cover as it may be cheaper. Hope this helps.

Yes the cover is 3rd party fire and theft.

As a yearly outlay i think 1800 is ok. Buying another car + insurance will probably equal around that amount anyway.

Next year, providing i dont make a claim, the insurance company will look to give jump me to a 2year ncd. They say they will consider the 5 years ncd i have as a named driver on my previous policy.

I've got 9 points... none of them my fault... will not go into too much detail... but I pleaded guilty to cut it short as it was his word against mine and no caliberated evidence whatsoever...

The *******o thing is that even after my points have come off my license in the 5th year... the companies all wanted a history from the last 5 years!!! so I'm not getting a lower quote until year 6.

I had an S3 at the time and the lowest quote I got was for £1400 from the A&A group... they were good, supportive and prompt in communication but they kept trying to sell me additional products e.g. if I paid them £200 they would reduce my excess to 800 instead of 1000 etc.

So I will be looking into the above link! thanks

Yup, it's true, despite the points being only valid on the license for 3 years, insurance companies want to know your points history for the last 5years!

He's a funny thing also, whilst calling up to renew my insurance policy not too long ago(for my Toyota Rav4), my points had exceeded 5years, but they was still on their records(not Sky), I told them I officially have a clean license now, and once they updated their records, my premium dropped by 60 quid!

I never understood that - if the law only cares for 3 years, how can the insurance companies be allowed to make it affect you for 5 years? Legally at that point you're time served, clean slate.

It's the same as the "How many years NCB?" and "Have you been involved in an accident?" questions - they get to put your quote up regardless of if it was your fault or not. No, that's the point of no claims.

Honestly, at a dinner party I'd rather sit next to a murderer than an insurance broker. Vultures, the lot of them, and that's hardly fair on vultures.

Points (endorsements) stay on your license for a minimum of 4 years now. In the OPs case of a DR30, they stay on your license for 11 years.
