Thread: Laid Up Car Insurance

I have a car that is currently off the road and declared SORN. My current policy has been fine until now as I have a valid MOT. This is going to change at the end of this month when the my insurance cover ends, swiftly followed by my MOT and I plan to get going with the spanners fitting the modifications I have assembled.

Anyone got any recommendations for companies that will do laid up insurance and are also good for modified cars when back on the road?

Best bet is for specialist insurance companies like AdrianFlux or Herts Insurance Consultants(HIC). I believe they have policies for laid up cars. IIRC, they come with a limited mileage allowance like 100 miles for you to move the car around, or at least get to to an MOT station etc.

I have a quote from AdrianFlux but I was hoping to find something to compare it with (seems pricey once back on the road) and it is proving trickier than I thought. I haven't tried HIC yet though so will give them a ring tomorrow. Thanks.

HIC is Adrian Flux, they will not undercut each other. Try a google seach on laid up cover.

If its parked up off the road, presumably with its guts hanging out, what exactly are you insuring against?

Theft of the parts. But I have also heard of several people having cars which were under going work lifted from the drive or even back garden by over-enthusiastic scrap collectors (thieving pikey scum with a pick up).

Forgot to ask, but I assume that this reply means that you don't do it?

Not having much joy with google as the car isn't a 'classic' (by age anyway) and limited mileage doesn't work for me because all the insurers state the policy is invalidated without an MOT (despite being declared SORN)

Apologies but no, this is not something we offer.

i had a r5gtt stolen from out side my house years ago when laid up in same state as you plan, ended up costing me £££'s as it was later found and recovered. thanks alot i thought, deffinanlty worth insuring
