Converting A DVD Or Video clip to play on an Ipod touch/Iphone

Ive had both an Ipod touch and an Iphone 3gs for a while now and have absolutaly no idea how to or even if its possible to convert a dvd i own or a video clip i have on my computer to play on either.
Is this possible?

I use DVD Decrypter then Videora iPod touch Converter for my 2g ipod touch

You could try 'Handbrake' which is a free download I've been using for some time with my I-phone 3G. It'll convert DVD discs as well as AVI, MPEG and DivX files for playback on any Apple device.

I use Wondershare DVD to Iphoen converter. Very easy to use......just click to convert....simplees

Erm...
Has any body got the time for a quick blow by blow account on how i use handbrake?
Ive down loaded it but have no idea where to start
