Thread: Apple's new iPad

Well the rumours were correct, Apple have released a giant iPhone!!

Now I generally like Apple computers, and I think the iPhone is brilliant, although I know people have differring views on that. However, I really can't see a market for this iPad thing, I can't help thinking it may have been the first cock-up by Apple in a while, it reminds me of the first handheld they brought out nany years ago that was a complete flop.

What are people's thoughts?

Why don't you see a market for it? There's a market for tablet PCs (ok, not a huge market) so what's wrong with an Apple alternative?

Well it's not so much that I dont see a market for tablet PCs, but the iPad doesn't appear to be a PC, it's a large iPhone basically, it doesn't run the traditional Mac OS and you can't use normal software on it, it bascially runs the same apps as the iPhone, and coupled with that, you still need to plug it in to iTunes to update it etc, so it's not really a PC at all.

Again, I am a massive Mac fan, but Steve Jobs openly slated netbbooks in his speech today, and yes they may have their limitations, but at least you can own a netbook and use it as your only PC.

SO what is an iPad exactly?

To be fair, I think the Macbook air is a flop also. I have never seen a single person using one here in the UK. The iPad is a bit 50/50 for me too, I wish it ran a stripped down Mac OSX, but alas...it does just seem a big iPhone. Great for internet, movies...but couldn't imagine trying to do any work on one.

I regularly see trains full of people using Airs. I've no doubt iPads will start to be used by some of those people.

For what though? You can't do any work on one, just watch films, read emails and surf the web.

And what trains do you get on? I get the train every day to manchester and back (and it's those decent ones, not the wooden box type ones) and i've still never seen an Air. I've seen plenty of MB's, and MBP's, but never an Air.

I agree that they will no doubt sell, but just not as well as the Macbook, or other much more capable Netbooks.

Leeds, York and sometimes even Darlington, to King's Cross. To me it seems the perfect replacement for a netbook. I know you can't do traditional work on it, but could you really do that on a netbook either? Yes, technically, it's possible to do, but it's bloody awful in practice.

I'm sure that's what a lot of people use laptops for, simply because they want the portability, rather than the full laptop functionality.

Why? The kind of things it'll be used for don't need it to multi-task. Besides, technically it can, it's just disabled.

Well it is on the iPhone, and as this is so similar, I'd assume so. If not immediately then eventually.

I'm sorry but there is no way the iPad is anywhere near a replacement for even a cheap netbook. I have a little Samsung NC10, it's well built, runs a proper OS (Windows 7), has far more storage, a decent keyboard, runs all your normal applications (MS Office, Photoshop, etc etc) and all that for £300! And I dont need to plug it into another computer to make it work!!!

iPad is for people with nothing better to spend their money on and want to be first to have a gadget and show it off on a Virgin Pendalino!! I mean can you really imagine sitting on a train holding a 12" screen in front of you (as it wont sit on your lap in the right way to view it without getting a stiff neck) watching a video, you'd look a right nonce!

I know a netbook can run a full OS and can run Office etc, but if I wanted to do that I'd use a real laptop, netbooks have always seemed a bit pointless to me, to be honest so does the iPad (for me) but I know there'll be people that like it. If I want to use office type apps, i'll use a laptop, if I want to look on the net on a train, I'll use my iPhone. I really don't get the in-between things.

I agree with that completely.

I think subsequent revisions of the iPad might well be brilliant, but for now it's just a big iPod touch basically.

I like that a lot, had me laughing!!

Tbh I would have a device similar to this most days, I wont have the ipad atm given I cant stand osx & its price tags, its a good start to kick of the touch pad revolution & believe me it will happen as the tablets are quite literally crap atm & always have been, flip over screens coupled with the keyboard base, just to messy for my liking.

There will be some new windows versions of this unit sooner or later, probably HP given there big step into touch already.

The air is tbh so delicate you would be better putting it in a glass case in a vault so it doesnt get broken, no matter if it is cut out of a solid piece of alley, you need rubber gloves to handle it so as to not put fingerprints on it, last person I knew owned one sold it cause was afraid to break it, but guessing it sold a fair few cause Dell in there wisdom brought out a copy huh, Adamo, probably as ****e as the Studio XPS units I bought & will soon sell even if has 5yr warranty, bloody needs it I tell yer.

I'll say this for Jobs though, what he's done at apple is admirable, very, considering state of them before he got onboard again, they do inspire people alot to do more than the norm, so this is imho a good idea, but I do feel this will be bought just to say I own one mostly, atm anyway, however I do like the way touch is going, alot, if anything it will inspire a shed load of other similar devices, just wish others would revolutionise before apple, although this type of design has floated about for ages.

Thats a very fair statement I think, the idea is great, but the product (at the moment) isn't. But as you say, it wont be long before we see more advanced and useful touch screen type devices that will be a viable replacement for netbooks et al.

My netbook is so much better. NC110.

They missed soooo many tricks on it, if they let it use photoshop and have a memory card reader etc then so many more would buy it, loads of photographers i know would.
