and which one?

What do you use it for and are you happy with it?

I feel I should have one cos a number of my colleagues have them. But are they worth the money?

 
I own one it's a Handspring
The only reason I have it is that I have a GPS attachment and you can download Speed camera locations down each day.
It also has autoroute so you can use it to route find and it shows progress.
Apart from that I don't bother with it.
 
I have one and have had for about 8-10 years. I started with a Psion 3, then a 3a, then a 5 then a Psion 5MX which I still use.

The 5mx is not like most modern PDAs in as much as it has a widescreen and a keyboard. I run around plugging into Cisco's so the instant on of it is perfect for me. I have all my addresses (work and personal) plus my diary in there and it all synch's and backs up with my PC. The diary helps me to fill in time sheets and not miss birthdays and anniversaries. I use a encrypted database for storing passwords, credit card, passport, driving licenseetc details and use the spreadsheet and calculator all the time. The address book even generates the tones (or via IR to my mobile) so it's really quick and easy to make calls.

It runs off AA batteries so I don't need a power socket when out of the office or on a plane. It also has a monochrome screen so the batteries last for ages.

PDAs are very individual and may or may not suit the person sitting next to you. Mines perfect for me for what I use it for.

I also have a Tungsten T3 which I only currently use for SatNav. I got this as the screen slides up small but expands for use in the car in widescreen format.

If you're asking if you need one then the answer is probably not. I know many people who have got one and not used it. If you have one then the more you use it the more value it offers.
 
I;ve got a XDA-II mobile phone/pda. Basically its a HP IPAQ PDA with a phone! It runs microsoft pocket pc 2003 and is excellent! I have Tomtom Sat Nav also running on it and it is superb!

Its also very small and light, more so than similarly priced competitors.

Wifi aerial range is a little small, but otherwise a perfect product for mobile email, internet and organisation...
 
Compaq Ipaq H3970 bluetooth... Its a fantastic little thing and comes in really handy when making notes, reminders, mobile inetrnet and email, MP3 player, video player .etc The HP/Compaq range have the best screens out of the lot! Really sharp image.

I have a Tungsten T3 primarily for GPS but was gutted to find out that you can't download the camera locations on it. (This is because it's a Palm as opposed to a PocketPC!) I should use it for lots of other thing but currently don't, which is a bit of a waste!
 
Thanks for the response guys. It's always good to get a balanced and pragmatic view on such 'techie toys' before deciding.

I can always rely on you guys to deliver.

I am down to a short-list of three at the moment (all hp products):

- hp iPAQ Pocket PC h5550
- hp iPAQ Pocket PC hx4700
- hp iPAQ Pocket PC h6340

You're right Scotty, I looked at them about six months ago and could not justify one!

I got my laptops (work and home), a couple of desktops (work and home), I don't 'travel' for a living, I'm not dependant on being mobile. So why should I 'need' one?

At the end of the day it comes down to 'want', and a basic 'need' to keep up to date with the technology or fall behind ... it's a 'man thing'!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/groovy.gif

As Scotty said, a lot of people can't really justify one but you will certainly use it when you get it! You will find uses for it!

Dito all said above.. a need? no. a want? yes! But as Dicky says, you will use it. I love NEVO software... remote control coftware. you can program in everything that you use a remote for in your house, and when someone wont give you the remote just discretely change it... confuses people for ages! lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was down to the 5550 or the 4700 in the end. 6340 I thought was a bit too gimicky (with a built in GSM/GPRS phone).

Went for the 5550 in the end. The 4700 although on the surface has more memory, it is tied up as an 80MB file store (4x more than the 5550) and therefore not usable for programs. It is also not available as yet I am basically impatient to buy.

Ordered a Tom Tom III GPS / 5550 bundle and a Tom Tom Car-Kit.

I think the pocket themes are free. There is certainly enough free sites around with LOADS of them for you to download!

Have you tried TV remote controller 5.5?

Does the same thing as Nevo but allows you complete customisation over buttons and layout, uses ccf files the same as the Philips Pronto. That was the orginal reason I bought mine (3970) as it was cheaper than the colour Pronto. Although I have found lots of other uses for it, like using it as a PDA.
 
am looking to get a pda and to put tomtom on it, just goin to use it 4 a sat/nav thing, how much do u think i should spend on a pda, and what make,
 
A mate of mine went into Dixons on the weekend and paid £275 for a HP Ipaq 2210, Tomtom3 Wired solution with 3 yr warranty! Crazy crazy prices!

Have a look at sites like www.totalpda.co.uk for deals!

I think you would normally be paying about £250 for a good pda (Something like a HP Ipaq 4150) and about £150 for Tomtom Bluetooth kit.

You could always try and buy the bits off ebay? Just check that if you want bluetooth tomtom gps reciever, make sure that the pda has bluetooth. Otherwise just go for a wired reciever.

Got a 4700 on order.. but still dont know when it will arrive!!! Had a 3970 before, and am looking forward to the bigger screen/faster processor on the 4700.. Colleague has the 4150 though, and is very pleased with it..

Well it's been a few weeks since I took delivery of my PDA/TomTom bundle and so far I am absolutely 'made up'. Great stuff ... Wireless GPS and TomTom Navigator took a bit of getting used to. Had a few ****-ups mainly due to a lack of experience in use, but since then no prob. Just bought MemoryMap 1:25,000 OS for the Lake District. Hoping to use the GPS on the fells this next weekend.

In addition, got my Lotus Notes (business) and Outlook email (personal), calendars (appointments), tasks (to do), contacts etc all synchronised.

Downloaded a 'freebie' eBook last night.

In conclusion ... MAGIC ... it keeps me off the streets (and this ****** site) for a few days.

I have an IPAQ 5550, cant fault it.

Use it mainly for GPS Tom Tom route finder and Speed camera warnings.

Must get a cosha cradle for it though.

Got a Tungsten T3. Decided to try a T910 SE smart phone but just couldn't get on with it, too slow for a PDA and not enough specialised medical programmes for it.

The T3 is fanatastic, dates, addresses and patient and drug details andthe ability to link to to the surgery compoter systems has made my job alot easier.
 
In the process of replacing my Ipaq 3970 with a Dell Axim X50v. Can't wait. Faster and better screen, plus wifi and bluetooth.

let me know what you think of the X50v when it's up and running - I've got had a 3970 for 2 years now and it's about ready for retiring, and the 3870 before that. like the screen size of the 4700 (but no more built-in Nevo - grrr!!!), but work could supply an X50v for free so i'm tempted to go that route.

X50v is up and running and fantastic, speed is much improved over 3970, and I now have sd AND compact flash slots. useful features as well. i use it mostly for sat-nav, and i haven't had any lock-ups yet, had them all the time with the 3970. Looks really classy as well. nice solid docking station. I have noticed that the screen needs a bit more positive tapping than the ipaq did, dunno if i can set the sensitivity. 4700.. its superb, very pleased indeed.. 1GB SD card doesnt hurt it at all either, especially as you can also chuck the CF card in straight from the camera, and move images across.. i prefer the touchpad in 'cursor' mode, works just like the one on your lappie..

and even better, Piel Frama (who make the best made cases bar none) already do one for the 4700.. very very smart, beautifully made and top protection too. just have to wait a week or so for it to arrive from spain cos every one is hand made.. order one if you want to see how we brits SHOULD be packing our goods!
 
Glad your happy with it have you had any of the not enough system memory warning messages yet?
As there is a company that do a 128mb upgrade for it which stops this warning and helps with the amount of progs you install etc.
 
I have a p910, which i dont know if it counts as a proper pda, but u can prob download all the software u need, and upgrade the memory... also a sony clie hand held thing, dunno what it does yet :s
