im looking for either a lcd or plasma tv no more than 42". the make isnt really a problem, its for my house when i move in and i will have sky +,dvd playerand a nintendo wii. i watch alot of rugby and football so it needs to be able 2 cope with the speed etc. my budget is around £800 or less would be better. iv been on a website link http://www.247electrical.co.uk/epages/twentyfourseven.storefront/46f682e301b9cbb027410a020f020636/Export/catalogs/tv

i've just ordered a 46" 1080p samsung LCD from John Lewis (free 5 yrs warranty!). I've had the 720p 40" samsung LCD for 1.5yrs and it has been outstanding but giving it to the parents.

Go and walk around currys or comet and see what you like the look of. Samsung are great, sony more expensive, panasonic ok etc... may cost you more that £800 but it depends what you want it for.

I wanted a 1080p telly to watch blu rays on and play PS3 and 360. These tellys will all look great for sport. You can get sky HD now with sky sports in HD, looks stunning, extra £10 a month but the box costs £200 more than a sky plus box. All depends how much you use it and whether you think its worth the extra money for the tv and for the sky HD.

maybe worth paying a bit extra and getting it from a shop you can walk back into if there is any problems with it. Internet always cheaper but if you have problems with the tv then could be a nightmare..

i know what u mean about buying from the shop.
im no good on ps3 or 360 i like watching my mate playing on them but there not for me and i wont be gettin sky hd so do i still need to pay the extra £ for something that i wont see much use for.
 
if you arent too bothered about having the best HD telly (i.e. 1080p which is 1900x1080 resolution) then get one like my old telly which is 1368x768 resolution (aka 720p). It will be lots cheaper (prob few hundred quid at least) and can still display HD pictures from a blu ray/HD DVD player.

sony bravia, 40 inch, 720 p, 5 yr guarantee. Ok its a grand so £200 more than you want to pay, but go into dixons and they will have 720p sets from sony or samsung in 40 inch size for probably about £8-900. Will only have the 1yr guarantee tho, unless you pay extra to extend it.

I just bought a samsung LCD LE40M87 full HD and i am really pleased with it. watching the rugby at the weekend and it looked awsome. got it from amazon for £899 which wasn't too bad. good for xbox 360 aswell although mine packed in on saturday so i won't be playing that for a while :(
a good point to remember is that the lcd displays sony use are made by samsung

am getting the LE46M87 from John Lewis on Wednesday. The 40 looks really nice, just want a bit bigger! No probs Wackojacko, glad to help. plasma are going out of fashion by the way, didnt really answer before about LCD or pLasma. I would say LCD all the way, its a proven technology which doesnt fade in brightness etc like plasma. I previously owned a 42 inch plasma and its faded so bad over the years, and my friends and family with plasma complain of the same issues.

I would not get a Samsung LCD I would buy from from John Lewis though as their service is excllent.
The Samsung TVs fail to impress with normal non HD channels which is still the majority of what we still have.
If you go to a shop to view these make sure they are playing normal digital TV not a HD presentation they have put together.
For outstanding quality for both HD and normal viewing you need to look at the Panasonc Plasma TVs.
The Samsungs black levels are not be as good as Pioneer's, and its colour palette is no where near as natural as Panasonic's, so it is best to go and have a look an choose which you think is the better.
Samsung are seen as the budget provider in honesty some of the prices are a little more expensive depending on the model and where you look but thats paying over the odds IMO for somthing that is not as good as the for runners in flat pannel technology.
The newer good quality Plasma TVs do not fade and do not need to be re-gased ever.
The life span of each screen LCD and Plasma is now estimated at 60,000 hours.
And a bit more info:

Recent independent European research for Plasma (the first in Europe into customer preferences for medium to large-screen TVs*) has revealed that after viewing plasma and LCD large screens, 73% rated Plasma as superior.

A majority of two to one rated Plasma as providing the best image quality and 72% felt that the best black quality was created by large Plasma screens. The research replicated the typical viewing conditions found in the home and produced very clear results.
 
Been looking into LCD or Plasma. Although the big plasma have a better picture, I am going for an LCD as they have PC input.
Means I can download films from bit torrent and watch them on the telly :)

Both tvs will have these inputs you may just need different cables.
 
I prefer LCD over plasma...

I like my 40" Sony Bravia :) Not fully HD thugh but still picture quality is excellent.

Thinking of getting a Sony KDL-40XBR2 soon
 
iv been searching the net and im still not sure if to go for the 1080p full hd or just get a 720p. will 720p be good enough for watching the rugby/football on normal sky. iv found a sharp lc42xdie 1080p for £800 with 5 year garantee from john lewis. would it be worth it in the long run to get that or just get a 720p samsung/sharp etc.

do u watch alot of sport on sky etc as i watch alot of sport and like action movies
 
If you plan to watch HD DVD or play HD games,get 1080p.
If you plan to watch SKY HD,get 720p.
It really is that simple !
SKY aren't going to 1080p for a while (years).
Until they do,it's 720p for me.
 
in that case i will just go for the 720p.
what do you reconmend and were from?
 
yeah 720p..i think for sports and action, better look for a 100Hz one for better pic quality
 
I have the 100hz Toshiba 32WLT68.
Also available in 37" (wish I'd gone for that,actually).
Picture and sound is superb.
Standard def picture,through the SKY HDMI,is so good that I often forget I'm watching SD and the HD goes ignored.
To be honest,I'm so chuffed with the SD picture I'm thinking of dropping HD (but keeping the HD box).
I get fed up of the fact you've to crank up the volume on HD channels.
 
I have Toshiba 37 WLT 66and 42 C 3000 LCD's the 42 is the 1368 x 768 both are excellent picture quality. As for Samsung wouldn't give them room in the house after being in the TV and video trade at one time Samsung were terrible to deal with.
Brilliant for connecting the laptop to great big screen monitors.
 
That Panasonic 'LCD or Plasma' thing is so out of date.
It's been on the go for years.
 
Ok,a version of this has been on the go for years then.
Besides,even a year is a helluva long time in the LCD/Plasma world.
 
But if your budget is £800 you're buying stuff that was developed in that time frame - I agree that it is not relevant to you 1080p £3k TVs, but for the original question I would say it it pretty relevant.
 
It's interesting that Panasonic have always taken the stance that LCD is only good up to 32" and it's always been backed up by their range.
Until now,that is, when they've gone and launched a 37" LCD !
So,using that article, Panasonic are either condemning their new 37" LCD as pointless,or it's out date.
Which is it ?
 
If you watch mainly sport you want plasma, the refresh rate is higher than lcd ie it keeps up with whats on the screen better, CRT is still way ahead.
90% of all lcd tv will suffer from picture judder when fast moving lines or constant colour is on screen.

Panasonic are good poineer is better mind you more than your budget SOZ....

LG (ok) but you get a hell of a lot for your money currently Comet or Currys are doing 50" for 799.

Samsung (ok) good picture poor sound (picture normally better as contrast is set higher)

LCD should last longer as easier to repair!

My advive go to a big shop and watch them all make sure you watch some sport and movies try to get a dark picture as this will give you a true understanding of depth. also get hold of ther remotes and check the picture settings make sure they are all set around the middle IE not all blasted up to max.

Artice = 1 year old
37" LCD = newer.

Presumably they've gone and developed something a bit new...

I'd still go for plasma though.

Maybe once upon a time,when LCD was 'new',but not now.
I had a ****** good CRT which I held onto until March this year, because I couldn't find an LCD which handled sport properly.
My 100hz Toshiba LCD handles sport just as good as any CRT,even on SD.
Once you add HD into the picture (sic),it gets even better.
 
just wondering if its worth buying from a company with 5 yrs warranty or would house insurance cover it if anything happened.
 
House insurance will only cover you for physical damage to the set, like it falling over or someone spilling paint on it.
It won't cover you for faults.
 
iv found a panasonic 42" plasma model number 42px70 with cabinet. i really like the look of this and i can get it for around £1000 from an ebay shop with 5 yr guarantee? has anybody bought a tv off ebay.
also what are lg plasmas like as i can get one of these very cheap?
any help thanks
 
Pioneer over any other plasma screen anyday, its far too superior to be overlooked at being expensive.
Sony I think are way too expensive for something that has a different processor and plastic surround around the panel.

I personally went for Sharps 42" Aquos LCD panel, its full 1080p and is an exceptional panel for its money. I would of got the Pioneer 42" if it wasnt for the price at the time and I knew they had the next generation 1080p coming out soon after, and after looking at my uncles 50" Kuro panel Im for one am gonna start saving my pennies for that tele.

At end of day you can look at jargon all day and be confused to hell about which to get, but if you just pop down to your local shop with all the teles running on HD and SD on request. You will eventually find the panel your looking for, its really all down to what the picture looks like looking through your own eyes and no one elses. And I personally would wait a further month or so if you see a panel you like but cant afford, otherwise you`ll be stuck with a panel that you wont get the same performance from and be wishing you never rushed in.
 
Also I would not recommend getting a Plasma tele by mail order unless they are delivered by the company themselves and not some cowboy parcel company, these units need to be shipped upright at all times and once moved flat for a small amount of time can do serious damage to the panel. An example of this is Samsungs plasmas begin to develop a problem where areas of white on the screen become blue, this then spreads across the whole panel rendering it useless and unwatchable. I know this because a close friend of mine decided he would lay his plasma flat when moving house, he then set it back up to find a horrible blue haze.
 
If any ones interested I read yesterday that the two best plasma makers Fujitsu and Pioneer and dropping plasma as its expensive with little profit margin. so they are ceasing manufacture. It wont be long before others follow suite.

They aren't dropping plasma in favour of LCD though.
They're pulling out of TV altogether.
They specialised in high-end stuff, which people won't spend the money on.
Why should they spend umpteen thousands on a Fujitsu, after all, when they can get a Panasonic/Sony/Toshiba for considerably less?
Fujitsu are going to concentrate on their core business of heating/ventilation instead.
 
BTW, a friend's brother is putting his plasma back after only 5 months.
Terrible screen burn.

I've got a 43" Pioneer (436XDE) which is simply awesome. I've got a friend who works for Panasonic and he agrees that Pioneer are superior.

DO NOT BUY a Plasma that cannot display 1080p if you can afford it. You'll regret it later down the line.

Just bought a Pioneer 6080D, following your link CJP80. I was about to buy a 65" Panny in a department store sale and decided to do a bit of research first. When I saw your post I followed the links and finally bought one yesterday. So thanks mate.:beerchug:
