OK folks its tyres time.. I've been putting it off for ages.I am torn between the potenza re040 XL's on a Y, or the re050's on a Y.The 050's are cheaper, but they don't stock them in the extra load flavour.how much am i going to notice the softer sidewall? anyone fitted non XL's and then regretted it afterwards?or an i just being paranoid

You'll regret fitting RE040's full stop. I've had them on two cars and in both cases they are only even remotely acceptable between 7 and 5mm of tread wear, and even then are pants compared to Toyo T1S or Michelin Pilot Sports.
On the XL note, i'd defo go for them if you enjoy spirited cornering or you plan a remap before your next set of rubber.
