    CV joint removal

    Hi guys ,ive just spent the best part of 3 hours trying to remove the CV joint from my 2001 TT Quattro,does anyone know an easy removal techniques?
    I found a good site showing removal but it seems my car is different from the one shown.
    Any advice would be welcomed! Failing that i will book in with an Audi specialist.All this just to replace two gators with small tears in them! boo hoo

    I assume you mean remove the joint from the driveshaft, if this is the case then what you will need to do is clean out the grease so you can see inside the joint to open the snap ring that holds the joint onto the shaft, open the snap ring with a snap ring plier and slide the joint off.

    Hi Chris,i had a look and a feel around at the time but couldnt see a snap ring.if its definately there i will have another look only this time ill be armed with a family size tin of degreaser.I was looking for a circlip type attachment as used on vauxhall's etc.Ill have another go tomorrow

    you heard it here first........................................

    take the hub bolt that you removed to get the CV seperated from the hub.
    line the CV and drive shaft up in a straight line.
    screw the bolt in untill you feel it touch the end of the drive shaft
    tighten it some more with a wrench

    it'll push on the end of the shaft and pop it out, piece of cake. there's no way as long as i have a hole in my arse you'd ever be able to get to that circlip as it's internal on the shaft and physically impossible to get to.

    Hi Dave,The method of removal you are describing is the one i previously viewed on the net and is different to the set up on my car.
    My car has a large nut to remove the cv and not a large bolt as you describe.

    strange, in that case apologies for the hole in my arse comment. in 20 years of Audi and VW ownership i've never come across one with that arrangement

    If its an internal circlip the other way is to get a dead blow hammer or a hide (as in leather) mallet. Hold the drive shaft and give the inboard end of the cv joint a good strike and this should pop the cv joint of the shaft (it may take a couple of stikes). Because you have used a soft hammer it will leave no marks on the cv joint

    Thanks guys, but ive given up and booked it in with a mechanic, hopefully sorted soon.I replaced the broken spring and two wishbone bushes so i suppose 3 out of 5 aint that bad.

    hey dude,
    this might be a bit late but vw/audi/seat cv joints are push on and are held on with a spring washer at the end of the shaft, 2-3 knocks with a rubber hammer get it loose,

    buy yourself a elsawin copy of ebay, my copy covers my a2 and a4
