My Audi A6 180 Quatro went in for a small body work repair to the front o/s bumber apron bellow the headlight. When i collected it and switched on, the computer read outs were all over the place. The clock was reading the wrong time and the callendar was showing 31.12 1999. Fuel guage was jumping all over the place but eventually settled down. Other read outs were all wrong as well but outside temperature , total running time and remaining miles for fuel in the tank reset themselves. I am still left with no aveage mpg, no actual mpg and no average mph. The odometer and trip meter have both dropped out and the display shows 'dEF'. Also if you put the boot down or just rev it up standing still it pours black smoke. Had a problem for the last month or so with intermittent reading on temperature guage. have relaced sender which appears to have fixed this. Can anyone help? I can't handle all this electronic ECU and engine management !!!. Car still runs well, infact it goes like stink at the moment- so it should with the amount of fuel it is burning but it is a bit embarrasing leaving a black cloud behind you every time you depress the accelerator. Re bodywork - the front apron was only disconnected under the headlight to allow for some local filling. I am not aware of any wiring or sensors in this area that could have caused this. The battery was not disconnected. It would appear to be co-incidental.

Repair shop did not do any welding. Have fixed computer problem by disconnecting battery. Whole thing reset when reconnected. Still burning fuel though!! I am driving under a black cloud at the moment. Earliest i can get it on the diagnostic unit at my local audi specialist is next monday.

Problem is a cracked inter-cooler on the turbo. Not sure how that happened - could have been when the front off-side bumper/headlight unit had an argument with the front gate!!! (Driven by a.n. other at the time). This was only picked up by luck by one of the mechanics feeling a distinct draught comming out of the side of the headlamp when he was passing the car while one of the other mechanics was revving it up on the diagnostic unit to see if he could get any fault read-outs. No fault codes had shown up under normal tick-over and non were showing up under high revs. It appears that the ECU was compensating for the extra air that was being drawn and sensing a weak mixture it was then sending extra fuel to the injectors. I suppose it was doing what it is programmed to do but it is a bit of a bu**er when it can't pick up a fault like this. If the guys at the garrage had not got lucky they could have spent hours checking out the various options. I hate to think what the final bill might have been like. As it is the intercooler in only available as OEM Audi part and is costing £232.00 plus 3 hours labour to fit plus possible re-pressurising, plus the dreaded VAT---OUCH!

oooouuuuccccchhh! still it is lucky they managed to find the problem, that one could have dragged out for long time.
Problem fixed. New inter-cooler has boosted performance and seriously improved mpg if computer read outs to be believed. The 'slug' is flying!
