Hi all ive been selected from my work to attend a Gala Dinner in London, the dress code is Black Tie optional, i assume they mean black bow tie optional?

so could i wear black suit with white shirt and normal ordinary tie, which is black in colour?

thanks in advance

Trust me, if it's got "Black tie" on the invitation, "optional" or not, wear a bow tie. If it's a posh do, and I mean posh-posh not just dressed-up, you should go the whole hog.

Dinner Jacket: black cummerbund; black bow-tie. Judging by your car's extras you can also afford: black patent leather shoes; and a white vented shirt with covered-buttons, double-cuffs and a wing collar. Oh, and buy a real bow-tie, not a tied one from Debenhams, and learn to tie it. It's easy, practice calmly in a mirror a few times a day and you'll be doing it in your sleep within a week. Real bow ties separate the rednecks from the gents...so, up to you lol.

Well said Maestro, and can i add, that once purchased, these things never age, so you will still be able to bring them out of the wardrobe in 5 -10 years time and if you have not put on a load of weight, wear them again.

Its more embarressing to be under dressed than over dressed IMO...

Well put already, I would wear the full penguin suit mate, I've under estimated how smart I've had to dress before for a dinner night, and felt a tit all night!

Exactly: never fear being over-dressed; it only shows the others up for not making the effort.

Thanks guys, glad you all stood up with me on this, so many guys these days dress-up like *****: what happened?

Oh, and the cool thing to do these days is when the evenings winding down and people have had a bot to drink and shirts get loose, undo your bow tie so it's tabs are hanging and undo your top button. If you're single and there's single ladies there I bet you a tenner a girl will comment on it being a real bow tie and hey, ice-breaker. when that happens, remember this post and raise your glass to me :)

Love is in the air......

Well said, you can never be too over dressed, I do like to under dress when im jus faffing about, but when dressed up, it does make so much of a difference, even more so when people say, "blummin eck, you scrub up well dont ya!!!" :)

I'd go the whole hog too!

I've got a Gala Night coming up in October and I can't wait! Now I don't wear suits that often. Infact I can't remember how many years its been since I've worn one. But I like looking sharp every now and then. The comments like Nilz said make you feel good too!
