Just received one of those in-descript letters through the letter box, and as I’m wondering who it could be from the horror began to dawn on me, it was from my old mate the Chief Constable of Lancashire. He was just writing to let me know that it is his intention to prosecute me for doing 90mph on the motorway. I know it’s all my own fault, but still………………………

I have a Snooper S4 Neo, which is laser GPS and radar, he will have got me with a laser, but the detector didn’t go off, it must be positioned badly. Even if it had gone off I was knackered, by the time a detector picks up a laser signal the laser has done it’s stuff and you’re a$$ is grass. The only way forward is a laser diffuser, which are illegal (but worth thinking about) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

clcollins, write back and tell them their equipment must be faulty as you were convinced you were doing 120... :)

seriously, what speed over the limit do you guys have to go before they lock you up?
for us 60km/h over and it's a nice court appearance, then it's up to the magistrate. if he's in a good mood, it will just be a hefty fine. otherwise license suspension and maybe even jail time if you cannot afford the fine.

That's why I got both the RA and laser diffuser, I knew I would be really p*ssed off it I got caught after spending £300 on RA alone (which has in built laser).
The illegality doesn't bother me, as if it saves me another 3 points then I'll take a heavy fine any day. It's a grey area which I'm happy to exploit if it means saving my licence.

whats a laser diffuser, how much and where from?

why would u be bothered about getting something that is illegal, but quite happy to do other things which are illegal as well (like 90mph)? like me breaking into a shop and then saying im not gonna rob anything cos its illegal.

The Target LRC100 is basically a garage door opener.
But coincidently the wavelength it uses is the same as Police laser guns. It is a transponder (smaller than a matchbox) that mounts to the front of the car (under the no. plate or in the grill), it detects police laser, and responds with its own signal that the laser gun can't understand so delivers an error code on the gun.
Police laser works by targetting a flat area of the car usually the no. plate, and bouncing a laser off it and calculating the speed by the rebounding signal off the vehicle. The diffuser delivers its own "garbage" signal on the same wavelength back to the gun, thus scrambling the process. The LRC100 does this for 5 seconds then shuts off so that the gun can actually get a speed reading, giving the driver an alert and chance to slow down by the time the second reading is delivered.
It's a necessity for protection against mobile speed traps, sorry "safety enforcement".
Laser detectors only work if a vehicle ahead is targetted. If you are the only car on the road (like I was on the M3 a few months ago), then a detector can't warn you until it's too late.
They are supposed to be illegal unless you can convince the authorities that you legitimately use it for opening a garage door. However, the consensus seems to be that the copper will just target the next speeder rather go through the shag & hassle of pulling you and examining the vehicle and going to court, in which time they could have caught 3 other speeders, and banked the £180.
The point is they can't do you for speeding, they can only prosecute you for preventing the police from doing their job, so a fine rather than points.
Only one person has been done for this in the UK as far as I know. It's a real grey area.
I like you're analogy Pimp, bang on. It makes me laugh that people are happy to break the law everyday, but wouldn't consider using a device that is illegal that will prevent them getting caught. Slight double standard?

I like pimps analogy too. However I would have no hesitation in fitting a laser diffuser, if only I could find someone to fit one!!! (Any recommendations)

I would quite happily take it off and observe all speed limits, once the Police have done, what the vast majority of people would regard as their 'core' responsibility. That is, to restore law and order on our streets, put the scum that should be in prison, 'in prison' and remove all illegal immigrants and, so called, asylum seekers from this Country.

Oh, and whilst they're at it, round up and shoot all known 'Islamic terrorists' in this Country.

When this is done I will be more than happy to accept the 'full force of the law', for any minor motoring offences I may commit ............

Time for me to eat humble pie, and lots of it. I've been having new carpet fitted, and the fitter quoted me £30 to take the old stuff away. I wasn't having that, but there was too much of it to cram into the A4. My neighbour very kindly lent me his Escort Estate this morning to take all the carpet to my local tip. On the way home, I was caught by a mobile unit using a laser gun, doing 58 on a dual-carriageway that has a 40 limit.

The fine is £60, precisely double the amount the fitter wanted to take the carpet away. The irony was lost on the police officer.

I also have to present my neighbour's MOT & Insurance at the local station when I surrender my licence. He's been very good about it. Now there's just the small matter of telling my wife when she gets home from work this afternoon. Sigh.......
