I've just worked out that for me to run my A4 1.8 15,000 miles a year costs £10 a day!!!!

Fuel: £1704 (90 miles for £10)
MOT: £40
Insurance: £1370 (ouch!)
Tax: £160 (might be £155?)
Service: £225 (1.5 times a year if 15k miles a year by audi specialist)
Wheels: £50 (part worns at £25 each!, roughly 2 a year)

That makes £3549 a year. I can't believe it!!! I am 21 a student and earning £100 a week of which £70 goes to my car.

I really don't know whether to sell up and get a small / family car. The insurance on a 2001 1.2 16v Clio is only £730 a year (fully comp and 1 speeding /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif) and so I could save £1300 a year, making it £6 a day instead.

Really don't know what to do?! It's nice to have my A4 but can't afford it!
I could get a tdi and save £676 a year on fuel and maybe £100 on insurance.
Or I could just get for the same price as my car a smaller car with 20k miles on it.
The only thing I can think of is loosing the aircon, but then i'd save £70 a year on regassing and it ain't even hot! Where is summer come to think of it?

I know it is nice to have an audi, but everything's so ****** expensive for it!

What should I do!!!!???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Add in depreciation and it looks like you have enough left over to buy yourself a big mac.

Hmmm ... very true.
I don't think it is the answer to buy a £4000 clio to watch it depreciate rapidly.

Basically I owe myself £3500 (car) + £1350 (insurance).
Am thinking I could sell my car for £4000 and buy a £1000 vectra which ain't going to devalue much and save £300 a year in fuel and £350 a year on insurance and a £100 a year in servicing.

A 1.8 vectra is £2.50 a day cheaper to run as well and the deprciation on it will be tiny.

Maybe once you've graduated through college and got a job that pays you can buy it back again if you decide to get rid now...

Is a car essential to you right now? If you sell the Audi & buy another car, your capital investment will still depreciate, and you will only save a small amount in running costs. You might be better off selling the Audi, sticking the sale proceeds into savings, & then gritting your teeth & using the bus until you've finished studying. Then, assumimg you get a job with an income greater than £100 per week, you will have a lump sum to put towards another A4, plus you'll be better able to afford the running costs, and maybe a car loan as well.

im a 23 year old mechanic driving an A3T sport and my insurance is £440 with Priviledge maybe you should get an online quote!!! and see how much you can save i also found tesco and elephant and churchill to be very expensive, why did youbuy a car that cost so much in the first place or are you living beyond your means?

I dont understand how your insurance is so high its not even a turbo!

if you buy part worn tyres they will not last as long as new tyres because they are already part worn!

service take to a audi specialist and pay about half the price of an audi service!

try that site for your insurance /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

personally if the car doesnt mean *that* much to you then sell it

its nice to have a car but you shouldnt have to work to support it IMO /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

if it wasnt for my parents when i was at Uni i wouldnt have had a car and i definitely wouldnt have been able to run one off my own back!

Remember that any car (almost) is an expense, not an asset. If you bought yourself say, a small business instead, and built up real assets, i.e. other business's, then you could purchase any car(expense) you like relatively quickly, and then it becomes a case of "who cares" what the cost of ownership is, it, the cost, is covered by your business's.
Roll on RS6.....

Wowsers, just done a quote on privelidge and it is £1170 fully comp. I also don't have any ncb which is why it might be so high. Darn I can't change over as it costs £200 to end directline and i'd loose my 4 months ncd!

I think a car is essential as I'm commuting to uni this year and the buses round here are rubbish! I understand about a car being an expense all too well! I just can't believe this car costs virtually £10 a day to run!

I think I'm going to have to have a think as I do love my audi, but the whole affair is starting to cost!

Oh and I definately am living beyond my means!

most people do like beyond their means just be carefull my friend done what you are doing and ended up in so much debt he ended up selling everything he had to break even and then start again, college and uni got him in that mess.

good luck eitherway!

AjMAckie.... im in a simmliar position. Im 18, got an a4, and welll..... IN DEBT!!

its a 1.9TDi...so i payed 5grand for it, cos of the diesel. Then foked out 1.7k for Fully comp insurance. It goes nice on the petrol..but im thinking of getting rid. I dont have the cash to do it lol. Well....the car only cost me 3, cos i got 2k for my old corsa which was modded to the gills. But TBH, i would like to keep it..because..well its and AUDI!! nuf said!

I'm starting to think of keeping it, but then i'm not sure!

I could get a 2 litre mondeo ghia x with leather and cruise control for a wee bit over a grand and due to £450 excess on fully comp, cheaper to insure it tpft for £1000.

Just looked on privilidge and when it comes to renewing my insurance next april it is going to be £980 fully comp for my 1.8 se a4 or £844 tpft on mondeo 2.0 ghia x. So that isn't much difference really.

I've been extra light footed on accelerator and done 59 miles and it says i've got 110 miles left to go, off a tenner (30 mile reserve), so that is 139 miles off a tenner. Guess that ain't realistic but sounds good none the less!

Anyway, I shall wait for my results as the chances are i'll have to repeat the year so will have a bit more cash earned too!

jdp1962 you dont sound like a grumpy old man just someone with experience, i myself am a student with an audi and if it wasnt for my undying love of motor cars from such an early age (7years old i had my first £25 blue mini) i would like the rest of my friends be driving around in a old banger, i myself have elected to stay at home whilst going to university as with soaring fees and accomodation prices it seems to be the best bet. Just a thought.

Happy Motoring

Justin

i think i do think things over ever so slightly too much richy, my mates all say that!
Too much competition to sell drugs! Probably supply everything on a tab and then end up in more debt with court fees!!!!
It certainly does save money staying at home! Mind you probably no point living there for 1 module a week since i'm probably going to fail this year!!! Then I would be able to afford my car with more work!! How much was your respray out of interest? My mate has just bought a yellow volvo 740 ex ambulance off ebay, it is so funny and needs a respray!

Nice one, you gotta post some pics (before respray) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/froggie_red.gif

£7 per day in oil!!!!! and brown paper bags to put over your head (jeremy clarkson driving a lada then destroying it!). £10 a week saving is still quite a lot considering I only earn £95 a week after tax. But when I come to renew it in April, it will cost the same for a mondeo 2.0 ghia x tpft and my a4 1.8se. So I will only save on the £3000 difference of car that i won't have to pay off.

I've paid off £800 which has took me £1000 overdrawn in current account with another £3500 to owe. I'm just going to sell it most likely as I should get £4000 which means I would have £3000 left to pay off debts of £4800 after buying a £1000 car from it. I could pay that off quite easily. I can't believe I owe £4800, I would never have dreamt of getting a £4800 bank loan as a student.

You ort to see what you get on a mondeo 2.0 ghia x - aircon, heated leather seats, cruise control, trip and best of all it is only a grand so don't need to worry about it parked up at uni etc.

Like I said, when i finally finish uni, then I can get my S4 beast! I really would like to keep it but can't be bothered working loads just to pay it off when i can still have a car, just not as nice.

jdp1962 - anyone around where i live would vouch how crap the bus service is around mine! It would take me 1h 30mins+ to get to liverpool from mine, whereas 40 mins in car. Plus it'd be £9 a day!

Fair dos, mate. That's another thing that has changed in the last 20 years. Bus services are dreadful almost everywhere. I was lucky. From halls of residence to campus was a fifteen minute walk in the morning, and a four hour pub-crawl on the way home again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

I test drove a mondeo v6 today. The engine sounded sweet as **** and was very powerful. But the car felt a lot more flimsy compared to my a4. Really don't know what to do now as i'm sure i would get used to it ..... and the noise!!! wouldn't ever need a radio!

interesting. I'm a student as well, but i can afford to run a A3, it just depends on how you are with money, i got a few other business interests, without which id never be able to afford a £5000 car.

i can afford it, but i just realised how 70% of my earned cash a week goes on my car! I also don't want to suffer depreciation from £4k, would rather on a £1k.

Still not entirely sure what to do. Oh well I will wait till I get my results from my resits and then decide.
