All I know is I'm old, and therefore should be entitled to a Porsche! I'll be checking the seats for 'eau de urine' now if I land a windfall and decide to buy one!

Actually there is one really important thing that has hit realization since starting this thread for me. How ANYTHING can become ordinary over time.

Ten years ago if you'd have told me I'd be getting the keys to a brand new S3 and then taking to 350bhp (I was driving a 175bhp Golf Mk2 GTi 16v back then), I'd have bitten your arm off to get the keys. However, somewhere down the line a delusion has set in that an S3 is an ordinary car because you use it every day as if it was a shopping trolley runaround. I naturally thought the next step was to progress to (and I use this term loosely) a better/more prestige brand as who would want to go sideways/backwards?! I'd actually forgotten that where I am is not a bad space to be. Sometimes you should be grateful for what you have.

So whilst I've realised I can achieve my aspirations with cars once I've racked up a bit more cash deposit, at what point does it just become another trinket, and because it's not a second car to only be used on special occasions it WILL become another shopping trolley runaround that will fast deteriorate on Britains awful roads.

It's working out whether I need:

    1) a hack for weekdays, and then something mighty for the weekend (ie. a Golf diesel Mk4 1.9TDi 150PS + a Porker 996/7 turbo)

    or

    2) Something pretty decent every day that does most things well (ie. the S3)

I think driving a $h1tbox everyday might just push me over the edge, and I'd be finding excuses to use the Porker (unless I was parking somewhere nasty), so then the situation dictates that until I can afford the S3 as my daily, and a 997 twin as a weekend car then I'm scuppered on this approach. Given my wages aren't going skyward at the rate I'd like that is looking increasingly unlikely in the next 5 years!

Oh to be rich! If only I'd been a politician; I could have put it on my expenses.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head there Warren.

I have been feeling the same too with regards to how ordinary the car can seem over time.

I went from a 1.6 Fiesta to a CTR and quickly wanted more. I got the A3 2.0TQ and it was great but it was always a stopgap until the S3 came out. Got that and then I have been yearning for something else. I'm sure I'd get bored of that too.

It's not that I don't find the car fantastic, I do, it's just the event of getting behind the wheel fades pretty soon and it just becomes a normal car. I guess that's mostly down to the fact that it CAN be used as a normal car.

As I have said a few times I have always wanted a Caterham 7. Of course it's in no way a daily runabout so I'd need something else too. I found that I can get a 1.6 Roadsport for just over 10K and an early MkV Golf GTI for less than 10K also. I reckon my car is currently worth around the 20K mark so I wouldn't need to spend anything to get a fabulous weekend toy AND a really good weekday car.

BUT I'd miss the S3. And I know I'd miss it too much. So, for now at least, it stays.

I like to try new things...then go back to the old things I prefer using. I suppose I'm just a simple animal of habit

Like mobile phones, I can only use a Nokia! I did consider an S3, but just couldn't get excited about it. I admit it's a very good car (if not quite the Porsche/Ferrarighini eater that's been hinted at in this thread) but I suppose I'm just not an Audi-ist. I really liked my C-reg 80 Sport though

Warren: Nail on the head! We mostly aspire to having nicer and nicer things, and then they become "ordinary" (or Audinary). It's good to appreciate what you have

Very well put,and something I agree with totally....I think in many ways, one of the problems with the S3 is that it works very well as an everyday car,and it is so useable.

I've enjoyed, and suffered with a couple of fire-breathing(literally) cars, which were enormous fun to drive, but really a bit impractical as everyday drives, and whilst I am a bit older now,the S3 does it's job very well.

I got 'bored' of my S3 within 6 months and was looking into possible mods. Now I own a second, cheaper car that I use daily. Every single time I get into the S3 it feels like the first day all over again, crazy

That's the bad thing about daily driven cars. Even a MTM RS6 will get boring after a few months of daily use. A second car also allows for lower maintenance costs and less depreciation on the S3. Just my opinion.

Undoubtedly so yeah mate. Perhaps I just need to save up to buy the Caterham. That way I can have the thrill of driving that on the weekend and then the thrill of driving the S3 (i.e. speed with comfort and refinement lol) during the week!

Be sure you get the right one!....a mate of mine had a Caterham clone, and you could always tell when it was raining, even without looking outside, when he arrived.....his car had a hole below the dash in line with the seat, and the roof wasn't exactly right either.....the result was soaked trousers, and a wet head.

A proper Caterham though should be great fun....how about an R500?

A caterham would definetly give you the best of both worlds if keeping the S3, definetly something I've considered, far too radical as an everyday car but great fun on track or justy for a sunny blast.

I think an R500 would be out of the question unless you are feeling particularly well off at around 35k plus the cost of keeping your S3 = 55K then a hole new can of worms opens up.

I'm actually toying with keeping an S3 as a long term prospect and maybe buy something like a caterham or if I want a roof a 350Z as a weekend blaster, dirt cheap at the moment and who cares about running costs when its a second/third car ?

    I've got a caterham 7 and an s3 ;-)

But I never use the caterham , its only good on a dry warm day with no other traffic. Those circumstances rarely/never happen.

I've had a few 'interesting' cars over the years, and the s3 can not be called interesting, but it does the job its supposed to do quite well. Its pretty fast, and a nice place to sit, but its not involving.

I think a 335 bmw would make for a more interesting everyday car, that would also be practical.

YOU are my new hero Sir.

I'm not after a mega performance version of the Seven as I would mostly be using it for bombing about on the weekend rather than trackdays.

If you really want to know I watched The Prisoner when I was about 12 and instantly fell in love.

Not driven one yet though so I may hate it!*

As you say, 10k will get you a good one, ie wide track , adjustable suspension, big brakes.

It may not have the power of an r500, but if you put the same tyres on it, and get it set up correctly, it'll go round corners very nearly as fast if not as exactly as fast.

A lower power caterham would probably be less frustrating on the road, you wouldnt get held up as often, and you could use full power more frequently.

Go and try one, I've had mine 9 years now, and although I hardly ever use it, I wouldnt sell it unless I really had to. Its nice to know its there if I want it.

    .
I tried option 2 but was racking up the miles and parking in some dodgy back streets.

Went with option 1 and drive a Ford Focus TDI in the week and play with the Porsche whenever the urge takes me. Dosen't bother me at all my daily drive, I just put my head into work mode.

You'll never win with the 'it's not a proper Porsche debate'. Boxster/Cayman not a proper Porsche, mines a 3.6 Carrera ....... described by some as the 911 'entry model' and so on and so on

Buy what makes you happy or stick with the S3 which as said and I totally agree with is a great car. Just bear in mind if you do look toward a 911 turbo in the future they can come with hefty service bills and even newish ones have had twin turbo's replaced under warranty.

You have to be careful with high end sports cars that seem affordable, A colleague of mine bought a Gallardo (against my advice) and ended up having to replace the clutch after about 3 months, the bill to replace the clutch cost 10% of what he paid for the car. Cars like that are a rich mans game!

I don't think it matters what you buy or own, after a period of time, sometimes a short period, sometimes longer, you just get used to it and aspire to want something better. It's a bit like the more money you earn the more you spend - most people tend to live to their means and want more money, and most of us on here (being car enthusiats) are most likely to aspire to owning a better car than we currently own.

It's been interesting reading some of the comments on here about certain cars that are clearly awesome cars, yet they (and the people supporting them) have been totally torn apart!

I think Warren's made the right choice at the moment given the vast sum of money needed to not quite get what he really wants. I completely undertsand the desire to save for a 911, though and good luck!

Out of interest, are many members also bike enthusiasts? Maybe some of you should consider getting a motorbike for weekend toys if the car isn't quite satisfying in performance terms?! I've always had bikes and no matter what car you own you'll very likely never beat the accelleration and overall thrill of riding a bike. They're almost as practical as a Caterham, too. Almost!

I have to admit, you see something better & then start to notice little annoyances that an upgrade would fix, but then you after a while with the new toy end up in the same position, I'm like this with new technology man, always want newer things to try out, expensive hobby for sure, but still waiting to use my rocksprings MTB tbh, love that bike but havnt had chance to give it a good thrashing, sooooo wish I'd brought to italy, dohhhhh

Glad your keeping the S3 Warren - ( but was secretly hoping for some cheap mods to come into the classifieds )

I tried the daily deisel and the nice car in the garage for weekends a couple of year ago and personally for me it didnt work. I got in a rut and tended to just leave the toy in the garage and not use it. It then became a garage ornament and didnt get used and I saw it as a waste of money sat doing nothing. Just a personal choice thing I suppose and with having two young'uns and a house extension to finish I never got the chance.

Like Staz though I do crave a Westfield / lotus and may just find myself building one in the future. I didnt build a large garage for nothing just dont tell the missus, she thinks it was so I could fit her car in their as well as mine...ssshhh.

Well to take the pain out of what has been a fairly despondent week, I have just e-mailed the chap at Reading Porsche to say hold off the search for now, and if my annual bonus is anywhere near the magnitude I am hoping for (yeah right!), I may be back in touch come April 2010. If not it will be April 2011!

To soothe the sores of disappointment, I have decided there is a way I can drive all the supercars I want on a day to day basis, and a lot cheaper than buying one of my own!

Last night I decided to raid the deposit pot for our new car to the tune of 300 of your Queen's English notes. And the outcome; I purchased the new 250Gb X-Box Super Elite 360 Forza 3 Limited Edition pack (link), and a Gold membership / accessories. I've just cancelled my order for Gran Turismo 5 as Amazon moved the delivery date from 04-Dec-09 to Sep-2010(!?!).

I've missed driving decent cars, or driving at the Ring in the under specced GT5 Prologue, and I can see my Christmas holidays will be full of online Forza 3 gaming while it rains and pours outside. PS3 will be consigned to Blu-Ray detail. Maybe not the outcome I'd have chosen, but it's a suitable temporary substitute.

Just need to justify to the wife when she arrives home on Friday night why our hi-fi table will be sporting all 3 current major games platforms!! I'm sure the question will be : Why do you need all 3!. A conversation I'm far happier to have than the ones I've been having when at dealers when discussing part-ex values on the S3!

    Hopefully!!

    PS3 (highlights / lowlights):
Functionality: Blu Ray / Games Console / Media Ctr / BBC iPlayer / Vidzone / Wi-fi / easy to upgrade HDD (mine is 250Gb) / 24P video output at 1080P, HDMI 1.3a/b compliance etc...
Games of note: GT5 - eventually, GTA, Rainbow 6, CoD 4, Resistance FoM, MGS4, Big Planet..

    X-Box 360 (highlights / lowlights):
Functionality: Everything appears to be an extra! Online gaming membership (extra), Wifi (extra), full 1080P support (not available), 24P video (no), Sky on demand (Yes), HDMI 1.3a/b compliance for new audio formats (No). DVD media drive - yes 1080i, not blu ray)
Games of note: Forza 3, Halo 3, CoD4, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Oblivion

    Wii
Functionality: Wifi built in, Online gaming membership, 576P output is low, 24P video (no), TV Media on demand (No), No HDMI, Motion sensor gaming, DVD media drive - no
Games of note: Wii Sports Resort, Lego saga's, Mario Kart, Zelda

On a value level the PS3 hits the spot for me, but the X-box has some key titles and a richer online offering for core gamers. However the X-Box offering is outdated in some respects, and you have to pay too much extra for things which should be standard fare! Wii is simple and easy fun which is great for when you have guests who are great conversationalists!! I've never been a PC gamer as I use MacBooks, so if I had to put 1 in the hall of fame it would have to be the PS3 as the greatest all rounders (despite my fury with GT5)!!

Those point above are the very reason I have a PS3. It works fantastically with my 1080p TV. Although BBC iPlayer isn't the best. There's no way [that I could find] to fast forward or rewind.

The xbox can output at 1080p, mine is doing so as we speak.

it couldnt to start with, but MS released a patch about a year ago to fix that.

I'm hoping as it's a new promotion (the Forza 3 pack) that the units won't have been sat on a warehouse shelf for months and be an out of date unit.

If the 3 lights of death still an issue or have they resolved that now? Do you lose all your game data when it happens, or is the HDD data retrievable?

Wow, I love coming home from work and seeing how this thread changes on a daily basis, first Warren is wondering about a new car, then some muppets slag of Porsches, then it turns back to Warren's decision to keep the S3, then it's on to Bikes (MTB and Motor), then it's Games, now it's consoles and HDTVs....I love it!

Personally, I make do with one games console, the PS3 and the associated hifi to go with it, but it spends more time being used to play DVD and Bluray than games, waiting for CoD next week though!
