With regards all the "ridiculous", "nonsense" comments about bikes being lost amongt car's headlights, can you link to your research as there's countless amounts showing this to be a risk?
Research by people who ride motorbikes by any chance?

I used to ride a bike, but i dont see why headlights would give bikes less chance of being seen?
All it would do is give cars more chance of being seen and take absolutely nothing away from the bikes!

We dont have traffic jams or issues with parking up here.

I will continue to use my dipped beam. The benefits outweigh any suggested negatives.

    Nope.

Just because you don't understand why doesn't mean your last statement is correct.

There's loads out there but 30secs on Google found this one

    http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/1222267622.82/

"So as not to cause confusion with motorbikes, which already need to have the lights in Europe, the car and truck daytime lights will be different in direction and strength.
The Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations, which had opposed the introduction of the lights in cars, said it no longer did due to the stated differences."

Addtionally there's concerns for cyclists and other unlit road users :

"When the commission first mooted compulsory daytime running lights, MEPs were inundated with letters from cyclists concerned that daytime lights would make it more difficult for them to be seen. If all cars have lights on, there is a concern that drivers start looking out for lights, rather than pedestrians or cyclists."

....but I'm sure you've considered all the downsides of running with headlights on rather than just posting a quick response on the internet without knowing all the information

Now that part I whole heartedly agree with, and I can see how people will only look for lights instead actually focusing, and surveying the road for pedestrians cyclists etc etc.

I just still don't see how cars also running lights takes anything away from the motorcyclists?

I used to own a bike and I will hopefully soon be purchasing another one very soon so I hope you dont think this is just blind ignorance or that I'm anti motorcycle as that is clearly not the case.

Since you can't judge speed and distance from light andthe lights actually shield the vehicle from view somewhat (i.e. the eyes are drawn to the lights), it's hard to tell what's approaching when people think they've 'looked' when it's actually a glance.

If this is a car with lights :
    (0)---------(0)

    then is this

(0)-(0) a car in the distance or a motorbike a few feet a way?

Sometimes you can tell but many times you can't. If the only lights on were motorbikes then it would be obviously a bike. Since people are increasingly driving around with headlights on, it's removing the recognition advantage m/bikers had hence making them at an increased risk.

In the winter months or at night when you glance in your mirrors on a busy motorway for exaomple, I think we'd all agree that in the sea of lights behind, you don't really have a clue whats actually there....apart from lights. Well this effect is what people's unconcious brains will be getting when they look to pull out at junctions. There will be a sea of lights and people will think it's a light in the distance and safe to go when in fact it's a close bike.

At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just don't think some of the opinions expressed have been considered before being posted. All bikers are speeding mad hooligans that just blame drivers for any accidents and they deserve all they get is comments I've actually heard from people in real life. It seems there may be some on here that fall in to that camp.

MCN Quoted that all the bikes from 2010 will only have one front light and not 2.....Nothing wrong with bikes, Just in some case's its the rider and in most case's people in cars that casue the accendents. I admit i like to ride fast but only were its safe to do so....

The single light approach may help a bit but being so close together they can also look like one.

With regards most case's being people in cars causing them, well that's a common thought but it's not the case, at least in my home country.

The sats for the last year show :

    Causation factor
    Motorcycle only loss of control
    15
Motorcycle lost control - hit car
    5
    Motorcycle into path of car
    2
    Motorcycle hit pedestrian
    2
Motorcycle filtering - loss of control
    0
    Motorcycle hit other motorcycle
    0
Other vehicle into path of motorcycle
    11
    Other vehicle hit motorcycle
    3
    Total
    38
