What\'s a good Single Malt Scotch Whiskey

Looking for something over 15 years old.
Planning a cigar party for a group of guys and need a few good suggestions.

Bear in mind, I'm in the States and I'll need to be able to find it here.

TIA

What\'s a good Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Yeah...
I realized I spelled it wrong after it was too late.

Leave it to a purist to correct me!

By the way: You're just as mistaken to call it "Scottish".

It's called Scotch Whisky.

So.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/[censored].gif" alt="" /> Hehe

Sorry mate nothing wrong with saying Scottish Whisky. I know Yanks like to call it Scotch and it is referred to as Scotch Whisky but it is Scottish and it is Whisky.

2/10 for effort should try harder in future.

Re: What\'s a good Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Funny thing is....
All the bottles say "Single Malt Scotch Whisky"
and the books I have on the subject say "Scotch Whisky". These Scottish authors take great pains to explain that the person is a Scots, anything made in or from Scotland is Scottish, but the whisky is spelled without the "e" and is referred to as Scotch.

To quote one author (a Scotsman), "The Scotsman wears a Scottish kilt whilst he drinks a dram of Scotch."

Lastly... From the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary :
Scottish / Scots / Scotch / Scot
>>The adjective Scottish is the most general word used to describe the people and things of Scotland, while Scots is only used to describe its people, its law and especially it language: Scottish dancing; the new Scottish parliament; a well-known Scots poet; a slight Scots accent.
>>The adjective Scotch is now mainly used in fixed expressions such as Scotch whisky and Scotch broth and sounds old-fashioned or insulting if it is used in any other way.
>>The noun Scotch means whisky, and the noun Scots refers to a language spoken in Scotland, closely related to English. A person who comes from Scotland is a Scot: The Scots won their match against England.

Glenmorangie (10 years) or Chivas Regal, Glenfidich is also a good one. None of them are over 15 yrs but worth a try

Isn't Chivas a blended?

I have both of the "glens" already. They have a bit of a bite, in my opinion.

Re: What\'s a good Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Apologies, Chivas is a blended whisky

You could try looking at http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/
This shop stocks everything and gives you a decent description of most Scottish whiskies, they do ship to the USA but it aint cheap.
What about a wee dram of Dalmore 62 yr old 25,000 a bottle

You absolutely cannot go wrong with an Ardbeg 17 year old. It has all of the flavours, but remains smooth and very drinkable, unlike some cheaper, newer malts....

We did that last month. We are trying horizontal tastings of (the best of) regional drinks every month. In May we did Bourbon. Next month will be Cognac. In September we will be doing Port. In October we will be doing German beer.

Laphoraig
Isle of Jura
Lagavulin (very unusual can be an acquired taste).

I thought Scotch was Tape...

Tried one called Dimple (15 Years I beleive) once, out of my father's bar and that was Ok and I don't think he'd spend more than $15 on a bottle of whisky.

Looks like you and your friends have a lot of fun!

Glenmorangie (10 years) plus! Don't add water as once poured you will have perfection. Sip, don't gulp, allow the dram to caress your tastebuds. Enough! Enough! It's not the weekend YET and I feel the need for " a wee dram" so roll on the weekend!!

Talk about diversity... I just realized how un-alike our lives have become. Here's how we stack up:
1. From Africa via E. Europe; systems analyst
2. From "Hollywood"; corp. executive
3. From New Jersey; architect
4. From Pennsylvania; U.S. Marshall
5. Then there's me... Oooooh boy!

Re: What\'s a good Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I tend to go more for the islay malts like garethj recommended.
Lagavulin is my fave but the Laphroaig is also a nice drink.
These can be a bit strong tasting for some people because they have a peaty, smokey flavour to them.I think this is caused by the water on the island.
If you are after something a bit easier to drink try a Glenfiddich. You will find that the whisky from all the different regions of Scotland carry a different flavour and taste.
