Anybody knowmuch about Mk3 Golf GTi's?

Wife wants a runabout but I can't bare the thought of being lumbered with a Pug 106 or the like. Flicking through AutoTrader has turned up quite a few Golf GTi's. Insurance difference for her between a 1.4CL and a 2.0 16v GTi is 60 a year.

She's coming round to the idea now but could really do with some info on them

the VR6 was the only good thing about Mk3's....Mk4's are worse apart from an R32 version
Tailgates are usually prone to rotting as the earlier ones weren't coated

    Can't get a Mk4 for a grand though.

To be honest I know they're not quick but you get a better level of trim etc. It's going to have saddles etc dropped in the boot.

I had a Mk3 8v as a company car for 3 years, and yes they're really slow (10.3 secs to 60 IIRC). The 16v is definately the one to have.

Had two 16v models from new some years ago, did numerous trips into Austria and Italy.
They always performed well, were reliable and never touched other than normal servicing.

    They are heavy and slow!!
I would much rather go for a late mk2...so much better.

I sold my mk2 for a mk3 and I think that could quite possibly be the biggest mistake i ever made

I'm not getting it from a sporty point of view though I've got my Escort for that sort of thing. I want something well put together with a few toys and creature comforts for the stable and Tesco run and the the Mk3 seems to tick those boxes. Mk2 is out of the question as I raised the same thought with the wife and she gave it an outright "No" as they are too old.

Why dont you see if you can get a run out model of a Mk2, fully loaded, elec everything, PAS, CL, same as what you get in the Mk3 but the car is a whole lot better, let her read this thread, im sure we can persuade her to convert to the Mk2...lol

You can get A/C in a Mk3, it's not available in a Mk2 unless you can find an imported GTI G60 with it fitted I think?
Daily hack, I'd go for a Mk3 just because it's safer, Mk2 if you plan to drive it more, it's quite a fun machine to drive!

We had a MKIII 16v from new in 97 to selling it last year for 1250, it was still in fantastic condition considering it was 10 years old.
We had a couple of problems in the 10 years and 90k miles that it covered, like the crank position sensor at 90 which stopped the car dead, the ignition/fuel pump relay at about 5 which just caused a misfire but took a while to find and the starter motor which required a push start and cost about 85.
With just a set of springs and shocks you can sharpen up the handling considerably (probably better than an S3). Owning an S3 and it feeling to be faster than the Golf I was dissapointed on racing a couple of S3's to find that I wasn't that far behind. We always managed to acheive between 30 and 40 mpg too. Our car had full leather and aircon too which was nice

They have a big boot too.
