    Portable DVD Player

Guys wanting to purchase my kids a portable DVD player for our summer holiday, has anyone had experience of these, do I go down the DVD player route or the mp3/mp4 route?
    Thanks
    Ian

Get him/her a PSP. Get it chipped. Then give me a shout and I'll give you some software that'll convert DVDs into MP4s. Typically they're about 200-300MB per movie at the average quality setting.

I bought a philips one 1.5 years ago & its the most effective 100 you can spend to shut a kid up in the car that dosent involve a knock at the door from social services!! It goes with us on every long journey & it'll take its place in hand luggage when we go to Turkey in 3 weeks time!!

Why get a DVD player over a PSP? A good one will cost the same but you have to carry DVDs with you. With a PSP you can put about 8 films on a 2GB stick and it takes up less space altogether. Plus it plays games so they're entertained even more. PLUS if you get it chipped you get free games!

I'm after a DVD player for the car, but one that can hook on the back of a head rest. Sam's getting to the age of being bored in the car but not quite old enough to play a psp!

Plus he would end up dropping it on the floor and then all I would hear is "oh dear" over and over again until I stopped and retrieved it for him...

I find that sellotape comes in handy.

We got a twin screen 'Acoustic Solutions' DVD player for our cars.
Two x 7 inch (I think) LCD widescreen monitors that velcro to the headrests.
Work better in the wife's Clio than the A3, because the Clio's headrests are flat.
Haven't tried it in the D3.
Cracking thing, when our daughter was very young.
Since I got my i-touch (she was about 4 1/2 YO), she prefers it.
Suits me fine, as the DVD was a bit of a pain to set up.
Wires everywhere, and my wife having to sit with the player on her knee.
It would occasionally freeze/jump over bigger bumps too.
We used to get frustrated by that, as my daughter was too young to verbalize what was happening.
    "it's stopped"
"has it just stopped (frozen), or has it gone back to the beginning"
    "stopped...no...beginning.....yeah......NO"

For the same reason marriedblonde has eluded to, unless your child is a little more grown up actually holding one will be more hassle to the child than its worth & they'll just drop it! Not to mention the screen is a lot smaller than the 7" screen on my DVD player. The PSP is a good idea, but better for older kids than my 5yr old imho.

I bought my mum one for xmas it was a sony one which was white, only a 7" screen but it plays divx so I basically put the movies on a dvd can get 3-6 on there depending on the size of them and away she goes. Its never not played a disk unlike the cheap ones which are a bit of a gamble.

The problem with a PSP is you have to convert all the movies before you can put them on the memory card. Do you really want to sit there and convert movies at 1hr+ a go?
