Been trawling the web for a decent place to go on hols this year. Have been to the Algarve the last few years as i belive its the best the med can offer. Looking for a change and i first came across Egypt. Looking into Sharm El Sheikh and that seemed pretty nice until i read up about the political troubles which put us off a fair bit.

Next we had a look at San fransisco, which seems nice but all the hotels etc look like total dives unless you are prepared to pay top dollar. Its also pretty chilly for a summer holliday around June time.

So where is everyone else going this year? Recomendations from previous years would be good too. Looking at a budget of around £2k for me and the g/f. (spend too much on 2weeks of sun an the car budget takes too much of a hit!)

cheers

Nick

My parents have a flat in Egypt, just outside Sharm el Sheik so that's where i'm off to this summer. Very cheap to eat, but not to drink but the local beer sakara is quite nice and relatively cheap, spririts are a fortune.

Brilliant clear water and lots and lots of sea life, try and get a hotel on the beach

I really wouldnt bother with the 'political' issues - you wont find a nicer place for relatively little money anywhere else i belive

The terrorism thing can be a little off putting i know but think of it like this, if you live or work in any uk city you could easily be caught up in a bomb etc etc, so why let it stop you visiting somewhere you would like to go.

Well I grew up in Cyprus and so that would be my suggestion. Maybe a possibilty? Been going there past few years in Limassol. Possibly try Pafos or up to Protaras? nice beaches...

As I said, I gew up there so trying something a bit different this year. Going to Tromso (North Norway) over easter. Always wanted to see the Northern Lights so trying our luck next month! Looks like a nice place. they call it 'Paris of the North'. Going to be a bit cold tho....

Depends what you're after.

off to cyprus this year but had no choise as the sister in law is getting married out there. Nearly told the wife i wasn`t wasting my hols on that but .............

think it will be too hot in july especially for the little one :(

Going to Craig Tara near Ayr for a week with kids at end of August.

Gotta be careful out in the sun. Hasn't rained there for like 10 months so its going to be hot! Best time to go IMO is just before summer kicks in, or just after. August time. But as you said because of the marriage you kinda have no choice!

Going to florida/ new orleans/ new york for 2 weeks on a mini road trip in november all going well.

I'm off to centre parcs on the 29th Feb for a long weekend, we've just booked 10 days in Koi Samui at Poppies without our 16month old son at the end of may. (thank god for grand parents!!!!)

And a weeks cruise around the med in september for all of us. And I guess we will have another long weekend at centre parcs as well at some point.

Last year I only had one holiday though and that was only a week, plus I worked all over the festive period except christmas day, boxing day and new years day...

A wonderful Family easter break to the Lake District is in order soon..

..Then Sicilly to see family in the summer, and me and my brother will more than likely go somewhere after that (late summer just before uni kicks in) then before or after that, me and mates are going on a little road trip across europe.. but i want my S3 before this happens.. :D

Got a week in June booked to go to Turgetreis in Turkey for me, the missus & the little one. Its just before the schools break up for holidays so its drastically cheaper! 1 week all inclusive at a 4* gaff for £1,100. Never been to Turkey but what you get for the money & Lottie's recommendations made our minds up to give it a go.

If I can i'd like to fit a city break in with the missus later in the year, done Rome & Barcelona in the last 2 years so thinking maybe Venice next.

For the money your looking to spend have you thought about Cancun in Mexixo. Just about everyone i've ever heard talk about the place has given it the thumbs up.

Egypt is still a possiblity but hearing stories about tour buses being escorted by armed gaurds and police motorbikes etc kinda puts me off.

Been to cyprus twice, its pretty nice but when ive been its been 40+ some days! Too hot to enjoy what it has to offer.

We went to Norway for a week last December and it was amazing. We stayed near Oslo so didnt manage to catch the Northern lights etc, but there was lots of snow! Its very expensive though, Fiver for a bottle of beer and 30quid for a pizza wasnt friendly for the wallet thats for sure.

Looking to go abroad rather than the uk, as might be able to sneak in a 1weeks stay near Devon at some point in the year too.

Maldives etc would be great but if i was going to somewhere like that id like to spend a bit more to make it extra special.

So no closer to a decision as yet, might have to hit the travel agents to see if anything sways us.

Im going to the Maldives again but Mrs already moaning that she wants to go back to Antigua next year, theres no pleasing them i tell thee

Thing is, in Cyprus they'll show the temperature as 42 on most occasions. It is sometimes well over that! Theres a law over there that says if temperatures go over 42 degrees, your not entitled to go to work and still get paid. So to get over this you'll see the news saying that the temperature is only 42! But I agree, it gets too hot to go out. Humidity is silly too!

Lots of people warning me about prices in Norway. It is going to be expensive out there but we're prepared. We agreed to go out there and enjoy ourselves. You never know whats round the corner!

Talking of high temps.

Can remember fishing for tigers on lake kariba one day and it was 46 :faint:

Thought i was going to die :faint: Guy who was with me said jump out the boat for a few seconds then scramble back in before the crocs come looking.
:wtf: :wtf:

PS Not tigers as in tigers :sorry: Tiger fish = stunning silver fish that grow to 12- 15 lbs but they have a mouth like a jack russel terrier

Very serious teeth on them Tigers:)

No way was i jumping in water i had seen crocs stooging about in

So i just stopped in our little boat with beads of sweat dripping of my nose

But i did have a few beers and a dip in the pool back at our fishing lodge.

Later at the barby the three of us were having in the dark at the rear of the lodge there came a loud rumble which dummy here thought was a big cat

The other two did a quick runner with me high tailing behind them and told me it was an elephants stomach rumbling

Sure enough the following morning there was a great bull taking a drink from our pool and wandering around our barby area:yes:

Sure is different this truck industry when it throws up trips like these

56 degrees in Southern Iraq in Summer 2006, perfect cider drinking weather...

Errrm Tidy Weekender possibly and a week in Montreal.

Always wanted to do a two week road trip round Germany with a load of mates, few days at the Ring, few days at my old boss's gaff then a week at a rave in East Germany.

I'm going camping for the long Easter weekend in Cumbria
June I'm going to Mexico for 2 weeks, looking forward to that

Nky_84 - the only areas that this sort of thing will be happening in would be near the border, north of Dahab. Sharm is quite different, it's not really 'real' Egypt - it's totally built for tourists, with an element of the real stuff thrown in.

But because its a complete tourist town, there is little to zero chance of you ever seeing an armed guard other than the police.

There is always a chance of suicide bombings especially due to the high number of 'western' visitors, but then again it seems nowhere is free from this nowadays.

I'm not trying to sel Egypt to you btw - personally i'd love to visit Mexico, possibly Cuba and i'd quite fancy a trip to california too.

I'd definately not reccomend Tunisia, i hated the place. Oz is really good but i personally hate such long plane journeys and it aint cheap.

If it's any help I went to Sharm last November with my girlfriend and it was lovely!

We had a beach front hotel the water was lovely and warm - diving/snorkeling is a must!!! Also make sure you go off-roading in the desert very cool!

I had heard the same stories as you, but having been there I agree it is built up for the tourist industry.

I was also in San Fran a few weeks back for a long weekend (am living and working in California at the moment) I absolutley loved the place will def be taking my girlfriend there when she comes over to visit, tried to do as much as i could in two days (Alcatraz, sight seeing, shopping etc) but there is still so much I missed out on!

It depends what sort of holiday you are after - but I would pick San Fran over Egypt - but that is just me.

Cheers,

Vern

Les Arcs next week, Le Mans and Nurburgring in June, Corsica in August
and a week at my folks place in Tuscany in late September

now all I have to do is work like buggery to pay for it all
