Ok I'm in the process of building a computer and just wanted to know one thing. I've got an AMD Athlon 64 4600+ x2 dual core processor and I've just bought a fan for it and it has that thermal paste and I wasn't sure if this chip would be ok applying this so it sits between the CPU and the heat shield for the fan? Hope someone understands this. Thanks in advance for any help given :beerchug:

try it without and watch it not work!

there is usually a little tab of paste already on the base of the fan (or is this what you are talking about?), but a little extra wouldnt go a miss!

The paste aids the transference of heat from the CPU to the heat sink which is then cooled by the fan.

yeah apply the paste, try and make sure its even and not a huge amount

For the paste use a piece of cerial box card to thin it out over the chip until its even.

If the paste came with the fan apply it sparingly and evenly.

If the fan has a rectangle of heat transfer stuff already on it, ensure any protective film is removed first.

Your processor runs relatively hot, and improper cooling will kill it.
