    Laptops

I need a laptop; it’s sending me daft not having one. For the last 7 months I have lived without, my work laptop is locked down so that we can't use the Centrino wireless and have to use a CISCO card.

It will only be used for Browsing the web, nothing else. I really don't want Vista so I'm not bothered what OS it ships with as I will probably just stick XP Pro on.

    I have seen these three,

    Acer Aspire 5051AWXMi
    Hewlett Packard RU964AA 510
    Acer Aspire 5101AWLMi

I fancy the HP and stick an extra 1Gb in for Ł20. I have no idea on processors these days, any advice?

If i were buying a laptop my first choice would be Fujitsu Siemens, they're bulletproof, next choice would be Toshiba.

Or you could always install a second operating system on your work laptop and boot into that when you're at home. As long as you're not going to lose your job over it.

Depends how portable you need it to be, I never take mine any where. I've got a Sony Vaio AR21s, it does everything (Bluray drive, high definition screen etc) but it really is far too big to take any where.

I'm also thinkin of getting a laptop. Not meaning to hi-jack this thread.

Can you be a bit more precise as to why Acer are garbage? Do they breakdown a lot etc?

Yes i have the AR-21M with a 2G Memory upgrade, mega machines, but like you say, expensive, and really are a desktop replacements more than portables!

Acer are the Amstrad of the laptop world, cheap & nasty to meet an aggressive price point. While this kind of works for the PC marketplace, a laptop needs to be well designed and robust, (it's not just a bunch of 3rd party components mounted in a well ventilated chassis). It will be lugged around and to some extent abused, so you really need to go with a vendor with proven history like HP, Toshiba or IBM if you want it to last beyond the 12 month warranty.

I bought a Macbook a year ago after nearly 20 years of using a windows based pc/laptop.
Best thing I've ever done, my Macbook just works ....... no problems, no grmelins no re-booting. It is the most reliable and stable pc I've ever owned. The quality of the actual Mac book is excellent also and I've managed to convert a few friends over to the 'darkside'.

Having spent so long using a windows based machine for so long it has taken me a long time to fully get to grips with the Mac operating system (and still learning) but the change was well worth it. I had toyed with the idea of getting a Mac for several years but was reluctant to make the change, extremely glad I did now and would highly recommend one to anyone.

Have you looked at this site for decent priced Laptops: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/

I have had a FJS laptop for 3 1/2 years now, been used every day, gets lugged around customer sites and although the hard disk failed on me about 8 months ago, its been faultless.

We normally expect laptops to last about 2 years.

I have a Black MacBook too and it is excellent. As already said before, it is a supurb piece of kit. I use a PC in work which is crap and I had nothing but bother with my own desktop PC.

It takes a bit of time getting used to the Apple way of things but isnt too hard.

I think the benefit of an ibook is more to do with not having a garbage O/S more than anything else.

OK so back to the OP. I don't want to spend £500 on a MAC, I don't need a desk top replacement that can power the shuttle. Do we think that the HP is a good buy then?

on a side note... I'd avoid ebuyer at all costs. Had some very bad experiences with them, after reading into it deeper there are lots of people who have problems with them such as not honouring warranties, poor CS etc.

I've had a very reliable Toshiba laptop for over a year now, have nothing but praise for it. Purchased it from laptopsdirect.co.uk

Only recently were bought by BT, last year, hopefully they haven't knackered it yet.
