Where do you like to drive on your own or with friends to enjoy your car?

I personally like the West Pennine Moors for a local drive, but North Yorkshire and Scotland for serious driver roads ...

Try A6 Shap to Kendal, long fast bends.

B158 between Paynes Hall and Wadesmill, north of Hertford. It's barely over a mile long, but in winter, when the verges at the western edge of it are clear from leaves and grass, visibility is excellent and you can just charge through. Mostly gentle curves with a couple of tighter bends; just make sure you slow down quickly at the Wadesmill end because there's a few houses there and a 30mph zone.

Used to love driving it in my old Ford Puma 1.7, just doing the basics using third and fourth gear. Fantastic.

Immediately near me (i.e. within 2 miles) it would have to be the Deepcut bends between Pirbright and Deepcut. Not very long, but nice and twisty with some interesting cambers. Often see cars in the trees (including a 996 last year)

Farther afield, I like the A685 from Brough (A66) through Kirkby Stephen to Tebay on the M6 and then through to Kendal. A nice 25 miles or so with good variety - from the dead straight and flat bit along the Lune Valley, to the very twisty and picturesque bit between Tebay & Kendal.

Good sretch of road that. I live in Godalming and hack through there to get to Bisley. :racer:
 
glens of antrim- northern ireland

some amazing coastal wide roads - some narrow twisty one! great irish countryside :D

down the east coast from ballycastle to cushendall

Short stretches:

The A631 from Maltby to Tickhill - twisty windy adverse cambery am I going to end up in the fields-y...

The A66 from Braithwaite along the edge of Bassenthwaite lake - it's the old road now made into a "quite exciting" stretch of dual carriageway :)

I know what you mean! There are a few bits and pieces of interesting dual carriageway in the lakes where the old road, with tight turns and rises, is just made into one of the carriageways. There is another bit near Ulverston which is very short but interesting.

Agree.

I missed that one out from my original post. I was in NI last year (to meet old family) and drove along the coast road from Larne to Giant's Causeway (diverting to Bushmills of course for the tour and a bottle or so for Christmas!!!)

The Antrim Coast is a really awsome place and I intend to cycle that same route someday in the future.

snake pass from sheffieldd to glossop...on a nice sunny warm day.....hired a lotus elise last year and went on that road over the ladybower reservoir...it was great....

and im a gal!! :)

Gotta be the road from Bosley Crossroads nr Congleton to Buxton which then hooks onto the Cat and Fiddle towards Maccesfield!

I had a very scary moment on the one of the big blind summits on that road many moons ago. For some unknown reason I thought it would be good to cane my XR3i over the top on the way home from Edinburgh. All appeared fine but the car seemed to be turning without me doing anything. Then I landed and the car squirmed all over the road. I've never been so scared in my life but drove the rest of the way home very conservatively..!! The road's full of speed camera's these days though.

I love the A82 North of Fort William, especially the long stretch alongside Loch Locky.

Luv it, and have done that route regularly from Home to Hertfordshire.

Hired an Elise? So what do you drive day-to-day?

drive my lovely S3!!....but love the elise...beautiful car and grips the road like glue...such a thrill to drive...what do u drive?

Gotta agree on this, i've even turned back at the roundabout at the end to have another go at it :)

used to love the cat & fiddle (macclesfield to Buxton) when I worked that way...... loads of everything and a long way down if you get it wrong!!

Yeah, and a bit of a jump if you don't! Hit that a wee bit fast in a MKII Escort many years back, stopping before the end of the road was interesting to say the least! Like you said, great road in winter, specially in that old 'Scort!...

Well 4 weeks ago I did'nt have a car to drive. Sold 2003 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro Sport on 23 March and was 'begging stealing and borrowing' my partners for a few weeks.

Now drive Phantom Black Audi RS4 and 'she' (and I don't normally gender my cars) is a 'beaut'!!!

Why ? ... Having seen the Audi 'Black Widow' advert so many times (and not getting the connection) and now having had the pleasure of driving one for a couple of weeks it's blatantly obvious to me 'she' is a 'she' ...
 
As said before, the Antrim coastal road in Northern Ireland can't be beaten. I took a day of work just last week to take a blast along it, stopping off at various attractions on the way.

Glenshee road is very close to me and i agree - its great. Off to the trossachs in a couple of weeks so will give that a try!

Also the long drive from Crieff right through Glencoe via Lochearnhead and Crianlarich is awesome!!!
 
Two local ones to me in Dorset:

B3081 between Tollard Royal and Shaftesbury - lots of high speed open bends with good camber ending up at zig-zap hill :racer:

B3078 between Wimborne and Cranborne - good mix of open and tightening bends at the right time of day little traffic to impede progress

Ohh ok then!
North Yorkshire Moors - A171 out of Guisborough to Whitby - plenty of roads off here that are fun - head to Carlton then to Hutton le Hole (past Blakey Ridge), Roads near Commondale, A169 to pickering - ahh too many to mention here!

Goodwood, West Sussex - some great roads around here!

For some really awesome roads head to the alps in France!
The A40 autoroute ends in Chedde, you then join the N205 to Chamonix - different driving directions split to work it's way up (or down!) the mountain - it's dual carriageway so room to move across the road - the route back down is particularly good fun - cutting a line through the corners!!!

The D902 from Bourg St Maurice to Val-Cenis - in the inter you won't get much further than Val Disere, but in summer you can go right over the pass.... great road, just don't get distracted by the views!

I'm hoping to do the St Gotthard pass this summer!
 
Lower Burnham road in Essex, have to look out for the odd tractor though! But once you get through the fields it brings you up to a high point so you can see the road ahead for at least 2 miles. Makes a great hooning session :)
 
seems the best roads are up north......... which is handy as im moving up there next month....:thumbsup: nothing but traffic jams down in London/Surrey.... The Abergwesyn road from Builth Wells to Tregaron is a cracking road in the summer but treacherous in the winter, the locals dont even use it then...
 
The A4169 from Craven Arms through Much Wenlock and into Telford, its normally deserted, really nice and twisty with decent bits to overtake on too.

In my LWB Sprinter I'd own all you S3 Pussies....
