In my never ending quest for a car next year, I have discounted the Cupra R but now I'm not sure about R32 vs S3....

The R32 would be approx 10k more expensive (LOT of money!), but would need a lot less modifying (CAM's, exhaust, remap) in relation to the S3 (wheels, suspension, remap, DV, brakes, exhaust). So costs less to modify, which means less of a hike on the insurance, and better resale (who wants to buy a heavily modified car, when I can just undo the mod's on the R32 quite easily).

Also resale value - not many R32's were sold in the UK, but there are lots of S3's of various ages. Does this mean the R32 will hold its value well???

Help!!!

r32 not as quick as a chipped s3 as this lad found out in Halifax lol

seriously tho they a very nice looking car and sound the b*llocks

my choice would be the r32 although the S3's interior still takes the lead - this is the car that the S3 should have been IMVHO.

I reckon the R32 will hold its value better than the S3 but I think you need to consider how long you are keeping the car for as the field is changing..

Yeah the R32 is a bit cheaper to mod, but not THAT much.. plus teh mods are limited! getting 300+ is VERY difficult, where as an S3 can get 300bhp withoput much hastle!

Hi Jo,
I can't give you a comparison between the S3 and the R32 but I can give you my opinion between the Boxster S, Mini Cooper S, 330ci sport and R32 which I've had in the last 12 months. Everybody said before I bought the Golf that the chassis is useless, IMO it is better than the MCS which is supposed to be one of the best in the hatchback kingdom. The steering feel is superb and better than the 330ci and the exhaust note has got to be the sweetest sound in any V6 and rortier than the sports exhaust I had fitted on the Porsche.
Best of all is the drivability, you can burble through a village at 30mph in 6th (can't do that in my remapped A4 Tdi) without labouring and just put your foot down coming out the village without changing down and it just pulls like a train again better than the Porsche.

The styling is very subjective. I had an Anthracite Grey which is less boy racer than the Deep Blue, some people may say that the blue is better as its the quickest Golf ever and needs to be noticed.

Depreciation wise, I lost £1000 over a 6 months ownership. I'm not sure how much they will hold up with the MkV due out soon, just depends when they bring the hot version out I suppose. The new A3 will probably have an effect on S3 residuals as well.

As you've got an S3 already maybe its time for something different, but even if you don't like it after a few months you're not likely to lose much selling it. Even better buy AMD's R32 with the twin turbo's off them when they finished with it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
BTW have they fitted them yet?

David the boomyness is cured by the milltek exhaust, why on earth did VAG release the R32 exhaust with that boomyness!

I didn't actually mind the boomyness in mine. Does the Miltek decrease the sound throughout the rev range? I've read different peoples views on the Miltek/R32. Does sound bloomin nice on the S4 V8, got to be a must. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1luvu.gif

I'm going through the same decision now, except its a Cupra R vs R32 vs S3. Guess I really should know which one to pick as Ive already owned all of them once /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

The R32 is looking favourite at the moment. Just think there is a bit more of an occasion in the R32 than the other two. As a drivers car the S3 is firmly last, but it has the nicest interior. The Cupra R is the value for money, but the inside lets it down, as well as the fact I like 4wd.

Driving this, but its now sold - dealer wants it soon so I need to sort my crap out. Trying to see how much I can get off an R32.

Hmm all interesting stuff.

Personally I like the external appearance of the R32 and find the seats more comfortable than the S3, just not keen on the plastic interior.

So the R32 is a better handling car, but the S3 gives the luxury. The mod's on the R32 I would do (cam, remap, exhaust) would sort out the boomy exhaust and give it c.300bhp with about the same torque as the chipped S3, and because I wouldn't need tomodify suspension, brakes, wheels, DV, FMIC, would proably work out cheaper, and more easily reversible (at resale) than the S3.

I would look to keep the car for a while - probably 3 years or so, on reasonable mileage each year (20-25k), so maybe it would depreciate more heavily than an S3 that already had some miles on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I would be buying in about 6 months time I think, so any price difference caused by Mk V should be obvious.

It doesn't get any easier this decision !!!!!!

Who's got one I can drive !?

And yes I would love the AmD one, but insurance would be a killer!

Jo,

As your a bird( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) I think that the car for you is a Mini Cooper S. They llok the dogs danglies, loads of tuning out there and you can have awesome kit inside such as the cinema etc. etc.

I chap I know has a brand new Range rover, a Mercedes S 600 complete with driver and a Mini Cooper S with the Hartage conversion. He uses the mini to drive the 26 miles to work ever day and says it also more fun than the Porsche 911 GT3 he has just sold. He also has a Bentley Continental GT arriving on Jan 14th, so he knows his cars!

Well that's what I thought - after all it has all the quality of the Audi interior, with all the dynamism of the 3.2V6 engine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I say again - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/1luvu.gif

Just read on the mk4 site that vw have an upgrade
map for the R32, taking it too 300 bhp.. and if
an R32 owner comes in complaining of lack of performance
then they will upgrade for free !!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Audi Girl your profile states you have an S3 "Audi S3
Colour/Trim Ming Blue, Silver Nappa
Options Cruise, Arm Rest, BOSE Concert
Modifications Pink Dustcaps"

What happened to it ?? Considering another ??, that's just plain greedy !! S3 for me, I'll upgrade one day when Miss Moneypenny comes along !/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/kiss.gif

I think it would cost more, and I like the look of the R32.... I would be buying 2nd hand.... and the R32 is a bit more "unique" than the A3 will be (fewer sold in the UK). Also I haven't seen an A3 so don't know what the seats etc. are like..

Don't want to - bodywork has been badly damaged (malicious vandalism a few times), was involved in a front-end impact (before I got it) and has had about 18 warranty claims in the last year because it keeps breaking down!

Word of advice, if you go to an auction and see her, don't buy her!!!!

You cant get a R32. Volkswagon Girl is too long, R32 Girl makes you sound like a robot and the compromise of VAG Girl sounds almost pornographic /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Buy yourself a good used S3, then spend the cash you saved on your essential mods. I have to agree with others that the R32 is just too Max Power for my liking.

It is pornographic to a french speaker. Vag = **** in the land of frogs legs and failed rugby aspirations... Suce ou lesh ma vag...

Anyway, talking about Rugby, I hope Wando persuaded his AmD masters to hire in a big plasma screen for Saturday, especially if it's chucking it down we can all cram into the reception area and cheer on the boys....
