It's a document scanner for a computer - you know the gadgets; basically do the same thing as a photocopier but put the image in your machine rather than on paper.
...And if we're going to get really dull and geeky about it, probably one connected via SCSI and being played with using a home-made Linux driver (I'll spare you the reasons why I think this as it'd just make it far worse).
