iv just drove down the road and my oil light has come on what oil should i refill it with? and can i drive to a petrol station on this (orange check light) ?

i have just topped up with 5/40w as im pretty sure its a pd, how do i know if it is a pd or not? just by the age of the car?
It was the orange check light that came on, wasnt sure if it was a STOP now or a better do it as soon as u get home kinda light so i took the stop now approach and got the girlfriend to run me to a few petrol stations until i found some 5/40W.
