i have been emailing the traffic people at my local council in complaint of some of the speed bumps down my road. after just getting a bill from the Volvo dealers for £460 to replace the drop links and control arm bushes on my S60, i felt the need to complain. they also destryed the shockas on my A4.
these bumps are bad. some are o.k, but they have the concrete bump type with a brick effect stamped onto them..... they is nasty.
please read the attached email correspndence and off any advice for my case.

Dear Mr Baxter,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the thumps on Barnfield Avenue. I have
visited the site many times since the introduction of the traffic calming
features and can confirm that the thumps do conform to all design standards.
The traffic calming was introduced to try to reduce vehicle speeds and
reduce accidents. Since the scheme was completed both traffic speeds and
accident s have been drastically reduced. The thumps in question are 37mm
high and are covered in a thin layer of mastic asphalt. Tests have shown
that provided they are traversed at speed below 20mph there is no adverse
affect on your vehicle.

hi ian,
i write in response to your reply reguarding the traffic calming on
Barnfeild avenue in Murdishaw.
are we talking about the same speed bumps ? there are two types of bumps,
firstly the square black ashfalt covered bumps, which i think are fine and
adequatly control speed on the avenue, and secondly, the thin "brick
patterned" bumps which span the entire road. this second type of bump, in my
opinion, cannot be traversed at 20 mph with out causing ( after long term
use) damage to vehicles. in any case, the speed limit on this road is 30 mph
and the is no indication or signs stating that these bumps should be crossed
at a speed which is lower than the limit for this road.
if the test results you have, indicate that no damage or adverse affects to
the vehicle occurs when traversed at a speed lower than 20 mph, then why fit
them on a road where the limit is 30 mph ??? this would suggest that your
tests prove that damage is being caused.
the slower these bumps are crossed, the more violent the crossing seems.
these bumps are not unreasonably high and i personally, have no issues with
my particular car bottoming out or grounding on the ramps, but the gradient
of the ramps is very severe and causes a great amount of discomfort whislt
crossing, not to mention the long term damage to vehicles.
The height you have on record for these bumps is 37mm high, but does their
gradient and width comply with legislation ?
also, as all cars are different and have different suspension set ups, how
can the test be accurate.
if you could advise me of the dimensions( height, width, gradient) of the
speed bumps, i would be happy to approach my local volvo dealer and ask them
why my four year old S60 has failing suspension parts and more
importantly,ask them if the car is designed to cross annomillies in the road
of this size and nature. after all, as a local resident i use tis evenue
aproximaitly 4 times a day, crossing 5 of these offending bumps each time,
amounting to 20 crossings per day, which is a potential 7'300 crossings per
year, minimum.
i would not obeject to any number of the first, square ahsphalt type of
bump, but the other type is damaging to any car travalling at the speed
limit. as your own conclusive tests indicate.
