just to throw something else in here...........

IF the plane does take off.........
will it be able to land on the same runway it took off from?

Re: Could the plane land on a conveyor belt?

The answer to that question is NO due to the fact that once the plane has taken off the captain will not have noticed he has run out of fuel and will crash 100 yards from take off killing all the passengers and 10 cows that where in the field suffering from major headaches waiting for this plane to take off.

Re: Would the plane take off?

Had a serious engine failure on number two earlier this week and had to go to maplins to get a replacement.
Tested on the lab floor this morning and all is well with the aircraft.
Conveyer belt chains finally arrived on tuesday and are waiting on my bench to be assembled.

To make my point a bit clearer, i think because it's not driven by the wheels, but by jet engines it would take off. As ground speed is irrelevant, only air speed.

    [/ QUOTE ]

sorry i havent read the entire 10 posts, but has anyone mentioned tyre limiting speed,
this is the speed the tyres are limited when the aircraft is on the ground,
eg on a jet i cant mention the tyre limiting speed is 135 knots, above that speed the tyres could burst.

right read through most of it, is anyone else actually a pilot on here?
the tyres would burst and they'd all crash and burn.

Nope... Ian are you sure you don't want to change that - think about it a little more maybe?

Remember that the plane is in motion (relative to the ground forwards) before the belt reacts.

ps... I don't care one little bit but I do wonder how neil is getting on with his model and how the hell he's going to vary the speed of the belt as per the instructions.

Re: Would the plane take off?

Model is airworthy, just waiting for the FAA to sign it off.

Feedback circuit is rather complex and took 25 years to develop,
consisting of my eyes, brain, hand and a variable power supply.

For various levels of thrust I will adjust the speed of the belt until the plane is stationary.
This is different from the original statement because it says the plane does the sensing
    and not an outsider.

I wish to prove that although the wheels are on frictionless bearings they are still laterally
coupled to the plane and it will not accelerate to takeoff speed.

but thats not right..the plane IS moving, in fact you need to re-read the original question - "....The plane fires up its engines, but AS IT MOVES FORWARD , the conveyor belt senses the speed of the plane's wheels ... etc etc
The plane is moving because its passage through the air is powered by its engines, and nothing to do with whatever its (freewheeling) wheels are doing or in contact with.. The plane will move forward, as the question itself stated, and continue doing so in the normal fashion until it takes off! You WILL NOT be able to adjust the belt speed until the plane is stationary.. you would if it was a car or similar, powered by its wheels, but it isnt!
if you were pushing a toy car, against the flow of a tesco checkout conveyor, would the conveyor going faster have any effect? No it wouldnt! you would continue to push the car forwards, with its wheels spinning like mad! same for the plane! aaaaarrrghhhh!
How can so many audi drivers lack any common sense whatsoever!

sorry, please, please close this thread... before I carry it on any more..

Tdi, send me some pics, go on, change the subject again!

So here is the apparatus in all its glory.

Unfortuanately I let a bit too much current through the chain-belt motor so it broke.
Will have to get another next week.

We did attempt a flight test under laboratory conditions, follow the link below.
