Does anyone know what the different types of insurance claims, write offs are?

I know Cat D is a Write off, but repairable. Don't know what Cat C or any others are,

Anyone able to help?

Category A: Total burnout. No value left in the vehicle
Category B: Break only. Value lies in salvage
Category C: Damage to car is more than total value of car
Category D: Repair would cost almost as much as the vehicle is worth. Better to write off than repair. No comebacks for the insurers

Think for Cats C & D you can repair but have to have the vehicle tested and certified fit for the road before you can put it back on the road/sell it on.

Cat D only needs an MOT to be put back on the road once it has been repaired. Cat C will need to have a test carried out by the DVLA along with an MOT to be put back on the road.

these are the official ABI guidelines.

• Category A. The vehicles under this category are extensively damaged vehicles such as those destroyed by fire, with no salvageable parts and vehicles which can never be re-registered to return to the road.

• Category B. Category B vehicles are vehicles which are extensively damaged but which do have some parts with value, these vehicles can also never be re-registered and returned to road use, or vehicles which require a complete new body shell.

• Category C. Category C vehicles are vehicles where the repair cost exceeds the value of the vehicle, however the extent of the damage is such that the vehicle can be repaired by the use of recycled parts or by using other cost saving measures. With a category C vehicle the buyer needs to apply to the DVLA for a Vehicle Registration Document (VRD) what used to be called a ‘Log Book’

• Category D. Vehicles which fall within D category are vehicles where the cost of repair is less than the
value of the vehicle, however for a number of reasons it may not be economically viable to repair the vehicle. This could be for a number of reasons:

• Category X / W. Vehicles not recorded on VCAR -

the test to get a cat c car back on road need to be carried out by VOSA, not the dvla m8, its basically just like having an SVA test, but they check whats been dont to the car to repair it.

ive got my eyes on a 04 avant B6 sport tdi at the mo which is a cat d, just waiting on a price from the breakers.
