Explosion at Buncefield oil depot

Anyone else hear this, this morning at about 6.00 AM.

An explosion at Buncefield oil depot at Hemel Hempstead.

I thought a plane had crashed outside, the walls shook and the bang was unbelievable. Went outside, and there was nothing, no noise. Then i could hear the sirens going.

I live in Hemel about 3 miles away from the depot.

I was woken around 6am, but I'd by guessing if I said it was the explosion. I'm in Bexleyheath, about 50 miles south east as the crow flies.

I know the area well, though, cos I used to work in Hemel, & lived in Bovingdon. Where in Hemel are you, TDI?

    Yeah, were fine.

JDP, i'm in Benetts End, about 3 miles from the depot. They evacuated Leverstock Green early this morning, there was a lot of minor damage there, doors blown off and smashed windows. My friend awoke at the sound of the explosion at Leverstock seeing the sky filled with rolling orange flames.

Not sure how bad the industrial estate was hit, as this runs parrallel with the depot. There is also a very small housing estate in between the depot and industrial estate, i used to live there!

Re: Explosion at Buncefield oil depot

I was cleaning the car about 1pm when a thick black cloud rolled slowly over the horizon from a north-westerly direction. As it was otherwise a bright clear sunny day, I figure that was the smoke from the explosion reaching North Kent.

I had a pal in Bovingdon who worked at Buncefield as a driver (I think he's retired now). Also, my old guv'nor from when I worked in Hemel lived in Bartel Close, Leverstock Green. Not sure if he still lives there now (it's about 12 years since I left), but if he does, I guess he's looking for a bed for the night.

    Take care, TDI.

I heard it in Barnet, and work is a no-go. I work at Dixons on Maylands Avenue, apparently the windows are all blown out and the sprinklers went off and flooded the building!

    Crazy!

Re: Explosion at Buncefield oil depot

I think Maylands industrial estate is a no go today. And that side where Dixons is, would have probably taken a good brunt of the shock wave.

No reports of a plane crash, but very early on, i heard from a nurse who said a plane had hit the site. But this wasn't disclosed to the press. But i suppose the residents may of heard the plane overhead. I don't think there was a plane. Who knows?

Stig-cat is in the front of the car, doing his pre-drive checks.

And the car just kept getting in the way of the shots.

I used to work at MDIS (now Northgate) which literally backs on to the oil tanks. I often wondered about it but you just assume it won't happen.

My wife used to work at Northgate also, they did take quite a hammering being so close. It was amazing the vapour escape happened early sunday morning, injuries would have been horrific.

Re: Explosion at Buncefield oil depot

Dunno if anyone else heard about this but apparently some of the families who were evacuated have come back to their houses to find they've been looted!!!!

2 week before christmas as well - what absolute B@stards would do something like that.

    Total lowlife.

I can't see how there were looters, as the police presence has been huge. All roads and entrances were blocked.

    Real shame.

    Typical fcuking hemelite skum.
